A SPECIAL HERO OF THE DAY!

Awarded For: being one of a kind

--

Ahhhh, Fall. To many, it should be a wonderful time of year. The weather's cooling off and Halloween is around the corner.

But to me, it's hell. The reason: my six-month car insurance bill is due.

My father was a bus driver for 23 years in northern Michigan. Because of this, he put me on his car insurance plan. His company was an educators' co-op, MEEMIC. Because MEEMIC only serves those involved in education in Michigan, their rates are generally lower. Even after my father quit bus driving in 2000 and moved out of state, and even after I was at fault for an auto accident in 2010, and even though I'm not affiliated with any school (although I educate dozens with this site), I'm still with MEEMIC after all these years.

This past Summer was a tough one for me financially, especially with my constant trips to the chiropractor that screwed me in the wallet. When August comes around, I just want to piss my pants. Well, the bill came from MEEMIC earlier this month: $712 for six months. So, I called them up and asked if there was a way I could split the payments. They told me that there was, but there was also a discount where if I paid them in full, my bill would only be $566. Now, $566 is better than $712, but it's also nice to shop around.

I looked at several other companies: Progressive, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm and Allstate, and Progressive, Farmers and GEICO all had better rates than MEEMIC, and the lowest is with Progressive, which is ironic since the woman whose car hit me was also a Progressive customer. Since it's been over three years since the accident and my driving record has been spotless since - except when I was pulled over for a busted taillight that was "fixed" with red tape - my rates have (thankfully) been lower and I think any insurance company wouldn't mind having me on board as long as their rates are affordable. This week, I plan on calling MEEMIC to tell them that if they can't lower their rate for me, I'll be getting married to Flo next week.

(OK, so the woman who plays Flo, Stephanie Courtney is already married and at 43 is a trifle bit too old for me, but you get the picture.)

But there's another good reason why I'm starting to like Progressive: their CEO Emeritus, Peter B. Lewis, is, well, just like the name of the company founded by his father Joe in 1937: progressive.

Unlike most billionaire CEOs, Peter actually gives a lot of his fortune to good things, such as the Democratic Party, the arts, the ACLU and many pro-cannibis groups. He became a staunch supporter of dope smoking after his doctor suggested it to him in 1998 after one of his legs was partly amputated. He did pay a fine in 2002 in New Zealand for having possession of the herb. He's even pledged to give away most of his fortune to the art scene in Cleveland, where Progressive is based and where the town's baseball stadium - formerly Jacobs Field - is named after the company.

Another reason to love Progressive: they don't support right wing talkers such as Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. Their spots, radio and TV have been heard on those shows, but the company has said that it was only an accident and pulled them off.

Oddly enough, Cleveland has their own version of our ArtPrize here in Grand Rapids that Lewis supports. Unlike Lewis, the Devos family supports the right-wing and is pretty much against everything that Lewis stands for. Even worse, the Devoses are worth $6 billion while Lewis is worth about a 1/6th of that. But that doesn't matter. I'd rather do business with a company that cares about its people instead of ripping them off. Who owns anything made by Amway anyway?

So, that's the plan: if MEEMIC won't lower their rates for me, I'm heading over to Progressive. Besides, I might get that Snapshot thingy that might lower my rates even more.

All I have to do is don't turn left when there's two SUVs making a right....

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwnnnnnnn....

Texas senator Ted Cruz told his given out a long, boring filibuster on Capital Hill that lasted a whopping 21 hours and 19 minutes. During the long speech, the Canadian born to a Cuban father talked about Dr. Seuss, Duck Dynasty and even told his followers that he enjoys White Castle hamburgers.

The reason for the filibuster is because like most other teabagger Republicans, Cruz is upset that The Affordable Healthcare Act will go into effect next week, and he wants to gut it.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid even said this on Twitter: "With all due respect to Sen. Cruz, I’m not sure we learned anything new. It’s been interesting, but it’s also been a big waste of time." Ummm, yeah!

Folks, I can't wait until next year when we can vote these cocksuckers out of office. Obamacare will help millions of Americans, not hurt. There's a reason why we vote, and it's to protect us, but in the past 40 years or so, it's all about the fat cats that line their pockets.

But what do you expect from a man whose family was in the oil business?

When Rick Snyder ran for governor in 2010, his first ads aired during the Super Bowl. His ads aired long before anybody else's.

Now, with 13 months before the 2014 elections, the Nerd is making sure he cements his spot in the Michigan White House. His first ads are expected to air today, telling potential voters that he's not going to allow Michigan to be 50th place like it was under George W. Bu - er, Jennifer Granholm.

Although he hasn't officially announced his candidacy yet, it's expected that Snyder will indeed run for the Republican ticket. So far, the sole competitor for Snyder is ex-congressman Mark Schauer. In early polls, results are mixed depending on who you talk to. Then again, the election's not for a little more than 13 months, so things are being left to gestate to either perfection or disaster.

But the Democrats are indeed calling foul, since Snyder is close allies with elitists such as the Devoses and is practically in their pockets. During his first term as governor, Snyder has taken over struggling towns and booting out elected leaders, killed unions and forced Michigan into being a right-to-work state. His policies will cause families to further struggle and go to work in a shop that's anything but safe. Not to mention that his answer to fixing Michigan's forever-hurting roads is to raise gas taxes, even though at times, Michigan has the highest gas prices in the nation.

Folks, it's time to piss off the Devoses and the Kochs. Michigan needs a new governor, not a dictator. It sucks that the wealthy always win while the working poor and below are left to suffer. If people want Snyder to win so badly, it's because they're too stupid to care for the hard worker whose pensions are up in the air because Snyder only cares about the 1%. Yeah, I know, he wants to fix Detroit. But, that's their problem, not mine or ours.

Can't we just have the damn election tomorrow so we can be done already? :/

9.24.13 Bee-otches of the Day: The Emmys

Name: The Emmys

Occupation: awarders of quality television
Last Seen: Hollywood, CA
Bee-otched For: choosing a druggie over talent

--

Sunday gave us another ho-hum Emmys.

Thankfully, I didn't watch it. The reason: I don't really care. :D

Shows that I don't even watch won big, such as Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Veep, The Colbert Report, Breaking Bad and The Voice. But it was one segment of the program that really grinded my gears.

On Sunday, Adam Klugman, the son of actor Jack Klugman blasted the Emmys for not giving his deceased father an individual Emmy tribute. The star of the 1970's sitcom The Odd Couple was a three-time Emmy winner. He died in December at the age of 90 from cancer. During the ceremony, the Emmys buried Klugman with a myriad of other passings, with some people lesser-known than others.

The individuals that were honored Sunday included Sopranos star James Gandolfini, Jean Stapleton, comic Jonathan Winters and Family Ties creator Gary David Goldberg.

But it was one of the individuals, Cory Monteith that took offense to the younger Klugman. The Glee star died in July from a heroin overdose at 31 years old. He never won an Emmy while the elder Klugman won three.

“It’s an insult and it really seems typical of this youth-centric culture that has an extremely short attention span and panders to only a very narrow demographic” of young adults, Adam Klugman told the Associated Press. "I think it's criminal. My dad was at the inception of television and helped build it in the early days.

Klugman's parents were both major TV stars; his late mother and Jack's wife - whom they lived separately but never divorced - Brett Somers, was a popular panelist on the 1970's game show favorite Match Game. She died in 2007, just months after her MG sidekick, Charles Nelson Reilly. She also appeared on The Odd Couple, playing Klugman's fictional wife.

You know, I understand the Emmys' reasoning as to why they chose Monteith over Klugman. It's all about ratings and demographics. Glee attracts young people and gays while if you ask a 25-year-old who Jack Klugman was, he or she would shrug his or her shoulders. But sadly, it's not about talent. Jack Klugman made people laugh while Cory Monteith was a coked-up loser who banged Lea Michele. Yeah, he could sing and dance and ruin perfectly good songs and make crappy songs even more into a bloody abortion (i.e. "Don't Stop Believing"). But sadly, Cory Monteith died a fucking LOSER. Thank God he's dead. I hope that it will cause Glee to get canceled.

As somebody who's only 32, I'd prefer shows such as The Odd Couple and Match Game over Glee any day. Brett and Jack were both funny and it was always something when they interacted with people, especially on MG. It's a shame that they're both gone now, but there will always be the repeats. Glee, on the other hand, will always have its audience of little dumbasses who have yet to know what good TV is.

But on the upside, Lea Michele's single! :)

Name: Joey Prusak
Age: 19
Occupation: Dairy Queen manager
Last Seen: Hopkins, MN
Awarded For: paying it forward

--

Since its doors first opened in 1940, Dairy Queen has served up its share of Banana Splits, Malts and of course, Blizzards.

Of course, some think that DQ is just like every other fast food joint, run by slack-jawed morons who make $8 per hour and disrespect the customers. But that doesn't fit Joey Prusak.

A few weeks ago, Prusak was doing his normal shift as manager at the Hopkins, MN Dairy Queen. Like many, he knows a lot of his customers, especially one who has visually impaired. Well, the blind man dropped a $20 bill and walked to his table while a lady behind him in her 50's picked it up and put it in her pocket. Prusak told her that if she did not give the man back his $20, then she would not serve her. She argued with Prusak to the point where she started cussing at the manager. She claimed that it was her money while fellow customers witnessed the whole ordeal. Finally, the dishonest old lady left and Prusak continued serving customers in a professional manner.

Suddenly, the unthinkable happened. When there were no more customers at the moment, Prusak walked over to the man, opened his pocket and gave him $20 of his own. A customer witnessed Prusak's good deed and wrote to the DQ's owner.

Soon, the letter was posted on Facebook and Twitter, and it went viral. Prusak was seen as a local hero for helping the disabled man and even Dairy Queen's billionaire owner, Warren Buffett called Prusak and praised him for his actions. Many have even stepped up to give Joey - who probably only makes $10 per hour and paid the blind man two hours of his pay - a lot more than the $20 he gave the man.

As somebody who has been to many fast food joints in his lifetime, I think my faith in DQ has risen a ton because of people like Joey. I've been to McDonald's, where I've been almost short-changed before. But as long as Joey Prusak works at a DQ, I think that place will have both loyal employees and customers alike.

Paying it forward does work.

Occupation: radio giant

Bee-otched For: ringing Art's Bell

--

Things are starting to go Pahrump again in the night.

Yes, I said "Pahrump", not "bump".

Pahrump is the town in Nevada that's the home of Art Bell, the popular late night talk radio host. On Monday, he began broadcasting on his new broadcast home, SiriusXM after years of hosting Coast to Coast AM either full or part-time on terrestrial radio. The show airs from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. so it is not competing directly with the show he created, now hosted by George Noory.

Like C2C, Bell's new show, Dark Matter deals with the extraterrestrial and paranormal. There's few changes between Bell's terrestrial and (what he calls) extraterrestrial shows; even though he's now on censorship-free satellite radio, Bell requests that callers do not use profane language since he says that the subject matter is geared towards those aged "12 to 80 and older" and wants a lot of the same audience he had back in the day. He has a lot of the same guests and even sponsors, such as gadget manufacturer C. Crane and Co.

But now that he's on a new home, on Monday night, Bell decided to get something off of his chest that he's had for years: why he had been notorious for having more retirements and comebacks than Elvis or Cher. It was all in two words: Clear Channel. Bell used to own his show under the name CBC Radio Network (obviously not the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), but sold it to Clear Channel and their Premiere Radio Networks division around 15 years ago. However, in 1998, Bell abruptly quit his show stating that he had a severe family emergency. The news shocked his 15 million listeners. However, he managed to come back a short time later, but allegations were made about him by a Christian talk radio host on the shortwave band out of Nashville, TN that he molested children.

When Bell talked about the lawsuit to Clear Channel execs, he felt that he needed their help since their reputation was on the line. Surprise! They didn't budge, which led Bell's second "retirement". He simply did not like the fact that his own employer and owner of his show felt that they didn't need to help him this time around. So, Bell fought the Defendant alone and won.

Bell eventually told his listeners the reason for his first retirement was because his then-16-year-old son, Art IV, aka "Scooter" was kidnapped and raped by his schoolteacher, who was HIV positive. Thankfully, Bell has said that his son does not have the virus. However, the teacher was sentenced to 10 to 25 years in jail.

So, what brought Art back the third time? Simple: bad ratings. C2C's ratings tumbled after Bell's departure and fans and affiliates weren't liking the host, Mike Seigel. So, Clear Channel came to Bell's house and practically told him three words: NAME YOUR PRICE. Bell simply told the two execs to take four minutes of ads per hour and he's back. Of course, Bell resigned from the show many times since due to severe back pain to the sudden passing of his wife Ramona, but a lot of it was sadly due to the way he was treated by CC when he needed them.

The amazing thing is that Bell had the second-largest amount of affiliates in talk radio next to Rush and all CC could do is say "sucks to be you" when he was going through his crisis. When Rush was dealing with his Oxy problems, CC wiped his ass thoroughly. But when it came to Scooter Bell's rape and kidnapping, CC sat back while Nero played the fiddle.

But in all, I'm happy that Bell crossed on over to "the other side" and has kissed terrestrial radio goodbye, probably forever. I've never been a fan of George Noory's and from what I've heard, C2C has cut way back on the alien talk and is more into political and money talk these days. Very sad indeed.

Sadly, I announced last week that I'm canceling my Sirius subscription this weekend because of my financial situation after nine years. But I'm still a fan of Sirius and I'm happy that Art's back on the air doing the thing he does best, which is exposing what's out there. I hope this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship and the end of a terrible one. Clear Channel just didn't know what left them.

But what do you expect from a company $20 billion in debt?

There should be a flagpole that's permanently in half-staff.

The reason? It seems that there's a shooting every other month it seems.

With the latest shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC, it's just further proof that we are a violent nation. The shooters at Columbine, Aurora, Sandy Hook, the Navy Yard and too many others to mention were men on a mission to destroy for revenge.

We're knowing more and more about Navy Yard shooter, Aaron Alexis, who was "hearing voices" in his head. He purchased his Remington rifle from a gun shop in Virginia and opened fire at the Navy Yard at people he thought were "sending voices" into his head.Alexis was anti-government and had many of the makings of a teabagger.

Now that there's 13 more victims thanks to gun violence, the question is that when is this going to stop? We've had 14 years since Columbine to figure that one out. But sadly, thanks to the Republicans and the NRA, the government is more about protecting the Second Amendment over the First. Just ask Janet Jackson.

Folks, do you want gun violence to stop? Simple: don't vote Republican in 2014. Let's get the Teabaggers out of office and somebody with an IQ over room temperature to take back the country! Remember, we had a vote on gun control earlier this year and the Senate shot it down (no pun intended). The NRA bought them out, plain and simple.

That, my friend, is the only way to curb gun violence.

Bee-otched For: calling Miss America "Miss Al-Queda"

--

Miss America has been a time-honored tradition since it was first introduced over 90 years ago.

In its long history, the majority of its winners have been white. True, there were its differences, such as ones who were deaf, one who was diabetic and of course its first black winner, Vanessa Williams, who sadly was forced to remove her crown in the face of controversy, only to have a successful entertainment career.

Most Miss Americans seem to not make it in show business; other than Williams, there was I've Got a Secret panelist Bess Myerson, Batman star Lee Meriwether, Diff'rent Strokes star Mary Ann Mobley, sportscaster Phyllis George, Fox and Friends anchor Gretchen Carlson and 700 Club co-host Terry Meeuwsen (and all the people I just mentioned are all still alive).

But on Sunday, there was another first: 24-year-old Miss New York, Nina Davuluri became the first Indian American to win the pageant. She impressed the judges with her Bollywood fusion dance and her commitment to help clean up the remains of the horrific fire at New Jersey's boardwalk last week. But despite her good will and spirit, she was outcast on Twitter, Facebook and other social sites.

Many criticized the Miss America organization for allowing an Arab to win the crown on Sunday, even though she's Indian and not Arabic. Some say it was a slap in the face, especially since this was days after the 12th Anniversary of 9/11.

But all truth be told, Nina isn't Arabic. Yes, she's Indian, but guess who she also is: AN AMERICAN. Although she appreciates her Indian roots, she was born here in America in 1989, albeit to Indian parents. That does not make her 1) Arab, 2) Muslim or 3) A TERRORIST.

Nina is just like you and me, folks. She won fair and square. Let's remember something: our ancestors weren't from here, either. The Native Americans were pissed that us white folks came here and took their land. This country belongs to them, and they should be proud that thanks to reparations, they have casinos on their own land to thumb their noses at the people who took their land away from them. If our ancestors enjoyed moving here, so can Nina's parents. After all, her father became an OB-GYN, which provided a good living for them.

But sadly, some people are still living life like it's the 1850's.

Bee-otched For: once again spreading their seed around town

--

Like the Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Grand Rapids' Artprize is becoming one big, giant, overrated pile of shit.

Or should I say, jism?

The Devos family's yearly event which is designed for people to show off their works of art and get rewarded something like $500,000 (a flash in the pan for a family worth $6 billion) is underway this week and it will go on for something like a week and a half. Yeah, I know, I'm kinda guessing because simply, I don't care.

I know. The artists are talented and the first two winners of the competition were exceptionally well-done pencil drawings that were realistic. But sadly, let's not forget who's sponsoring the event: the Devos family, aka Amway.

Now, you're probably asking, "Chuck, why do you hate the Devoses and Amway so much? They've given so much back to the community!" I know, you're right. I'm harsh on them at times, but that's because deep down inside, they're evil. Personally, I won't do business with them. I won't buy an Amway product, nor will I ever attend a Grand Rapids Griffins game or buy a car at a Fox Motors dealership. I think the issue at hand is that they are worth too much money, they've outsourced a lot of jobs to China and they're in bed with religious Reich groups such as Focus on the Family and the American Decency Association.

Being a loner with not many friends, I used to go to the strip clubs here in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. Of course, that came to an end in 2006 when a local activist, Judy Rose decided to raise funds to challenge the city's strip club laws, and somebody did so anonymously. According to insiders in the industry, Rose raised a lot of the money from the Devos family. Why? Because she even appeared in an ad for Dick Devos' failed campaign for governor that year. Thankfully for Rose, the city was on her side, and the strip clubs were forced to cover up. Despite so many battles between the clubs and the courts, the city and Rose won each time. Rose felt that there was a link between strip clubs and crime, but even Mayor George Heartwell said that there wasn't, and he's right!

But yet, The Devoses have decided to kiss the city's ass once again, and it's by creating this drawn-out (no pun intended) festival where people display their works. It has been successful so far, but that's only because the media hypes it; WOOD-TV 8 even moves their news set to the hub of the festival downtown.

Last year, one of the most-controversial artworks was "Life Positive", three paintings by E.A. Conner, a man who is HIV-positive. His paintings of three symbols of the virus - a scorpion, a red ribbon and a biohazard sign - were displayed at Rumors, a LGBT nightclub on Division Street. The paintings were composed using a wood panel with acrylics and... Conner's HIV-infected semen.

Grand Rapids: the city where a you can't pay a naked woman to have her bare privates just millimeters from your face, but you can eat at an establishment where you sit next to a painting made from a guy's jizz. And it's not just jizz, but it's HIV-infected jizz.

(Paging the health inspector...)

I know, Artprize will be a boon to the businesses downtown, but I'm not a fan. As long as the word "Devos" is attached to ArtPrize, I'll stay out of downtown and keep living my happy, somewhat peaceful life in nearby Kentwood. If I had the money, I'd be going to the Deja Vu in Lansing often since Grand Rapids girls are all bitches. Instead of dating a nice guy like me, they'd rather date losers who beat them up and won't give them a decent life. Sorry, but if that's the case, I'll pay a girl $30 to sit on my lap if I had the money, thank you very much.

The Devos family: forcing Grand Rapids to kiss their rich Hollander asses since 1959.

A few notes:

*It's not surprising that KHQ's on top of the Facebook race, and so is Z93. Both stations are very well-programmed for being CHRs.

*However, this list is proof that the rock stations up north are a joke. The fact that KLT is only in 7th place and The Bear is in 19th place is proof that people are getting sick of hear the same 200 songs over and over. It doesn't surprise me that Bob FM is 5th place; it's evidence that KLT firing Finster from their morning show was a bad move and that Omelette can't do the damn thing himself and his lesser sidekicks.

*It's official: Easy 95-5/106-3 is the biggest abortion in northern Michigan radio right now. I think a TON of rock fans in northern Michigan are still PISSED over Del Reynolds killing off Real Rock 105/95-5 and turning 95-5 into a sleepy AC in the same vein as the ill-fated WSRT. Thankfully, the rock format was saved on 105.1... Sorta. Now, they play too much shit that isn't real rock at all (ie Fall Out Boy, Counting Crows, Dave Matthews, etc.) and metal has taken a back seat. Personally, I think Cartman and Terri Ray are two of the most-clueless PDs in the history of rock radio. As for Q100, I think they're decent for being an "all over the road" station, going from The Zombies one minute to The B-52's the next. True, they play out-of-place crap here and there (Maroon 5 into Foreigner, for an example), but that's what the seek button's for. Jerry Coyne just might be the best rock programmer up north as a result.

*I think it's laughable that tiny WDEE in Reed City has more followers than WCCW in Traverse City, lol.

*Lastly, there's ONE major station that's missing. It's a 100,000-watt heritage signal that once upon a time had live, local jocks and was community-focused, but has long been demoted to a crappy, satellite-fed jukebox that not only no longer has a website, but also has a silent Facebook page as well. Sad. I wish that owner would flat-out retire and sell the farm to somebody who cares about pleasing the listeners and not himself. Everything he's ever done to that station has been a disaster, and it hasn't just affected his staff, but listeners and advertisers as well. Sad.

While we worry about starting another war, this time with Syria or Miley Cyrus riding a wrecking ball buck-assed naked, we should be worried about another matter in America.

That matter, my friends, is the fact that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

A recent finding by the IRS shows that the wealthiest Americans are now keeping more and more of their money. As a matter of fact, income inequality is now at its highest since the 1920's. In other words, if you're rich, only a small portion of your income ends up back in the hands of Uncle Sam while the poor pay more.

Of course, that same statistic caused a little something called "The Great Depression", which lasted well into the 1940's. When FDR was president, he raised taxes significantly amongst the wealthy, creating new jobs and industries that benefited all. Things were pretty good until 1981 when a B-movie actor became president.

Under Reagan, the wealthy got a huge tax cut while the middle class lost their unions, saw wage cuts and so on. When Reagan was president, the minimum wage did not rise one bit, and by 1989, towns like Detroit and Flint saw their automotive past go bye-bye.

In 30 years, the only president that worked hard to balance the budget and make all Americans' lives better was Clinton. When the second Bush was in office, that surplus went away and in 2008, the economy blew up.

True, Obama had a good two-year run, but that got screwed thanks to the Koch Brothers and the Tea Party. Now, we're stuck with a Congress that only 9% of all Americans approve of and the fact that they would rather eliminate Obamacare over creating jobs and lowering taxes amongst the poor and middle class.

Yes, we should worry about Syria, but as for Billy Ray's little girl, she'll be dead of a Molly overdose by 27. We should worry about the fact that the 1% is getting stronger while we get weaker. Obama needs to be more like FDR and not an aspartamed version of him. Since Goldman Sachs funded his 2008 campaign, that's what we get. We want change, but we don't see a lot of it yet.

But hey! I got a raise!
