When Rick Snyder was the CEO of Gateway Computers, he was notorious for outsourcing jobs to China.

Eventually, under Snyder's control of the company, Gateway became a dud in the computer world and eventually, Snyder and co. sold out to the Taiwanese. Now, it's a part of Acer.

Sadly, Snyder's still making the same mistakes. Now as governor of the state of Michigan, he's doing everything to kiss his and 1% ass. In this case, he's printing brochures for the state's "Pure Michigan" campaign to promote tourism....

...in Iowa.

That's right! Pure Michigan brochures made in Iowa. It's almost like an American flag made in China. According to Snyder's camp, the reason for the Iowan Pure Michigan brochures is because it's cheaper. The brochures will cost $1.5 million to make.

So, it's cheaper to put together and print Pure Michigan ads in Iowa, saving taxpayers big time bucks, but our state's government can't support their own print shops? Stupid. As somebody who works in the industry itself, I think it's retarded that once again, Snyder has stuck his head up his ass and won't support his state's own. Saving money? How about REDISTRIBUTING it?

2014 won't be a good year for the nerd.

It seems that Walmart doesn't just screw over their American employees.

A Canadian Walmart employee named Carla Cheney says that she was fired from their store in Kemptville, Ontario because she berated a customer for leaving his dog in his hot truck. Her shift didn't start yet, and she wasn't wearing her uniform.

In an interview with the local CBC affiliate in Ottawa, Cheney claimed that she was threatening to call the cops if the man didn't come out soon. She sat at a picnic table as the man came out, jumped into his truck and came toward her with his truck. The man nicely introed himself and Cheney told him that he shouldn't leave his dog in his truck, and the next time he came, she would call the cops on him. Cheney then said that he would never come to that Walmart again, and she said "fine" and he left.

Later on that day, Cheney was called into her boss's office, and gave her side of the story. The manager then told her that she had no authority to tell employees how to treat their animals, and that she would be terminated as a result. Cheney claimed that she was doing the right thing, and other employees were doing the same thing as well, but apparently, she was the chosen one to go. Their excuse was she was rude to that customer, but she wasn't even on the clock when it happened.

But that's Walmart for ya: a chain that cares more about customers and money than their own underpaid employees. After all, when their founders are worth over $20 billion a piece while their employees only make less than $20,000 per year, it makes me proud that I avoid them at all costs.

But today's Bee-otch of the Day has an honorable mention, and it's the producers of Fox's Masterchef. Sadly, Walmart is a major sponsor of that show, and it's turning into a 60-minute ad for the chain. During some of the show's challenges, they use and promote Walmart products, such as their meats and produce. I cringe when the fat dude, Graham Elliot talks about how Masterchef only uses high-quality ingredients and that only one out of five steaks can be sold at Walmart.

But that reminds me of another Fox show from years past: King of the Hill. In one episode, Hank is pissed over the quality of the meat and produce that Mega-Lo Mart (the Arlen, TX version of Walmart) sells, so he joins a local co-op and is shocked that their food actually has flavor. It's the truth: Walmart doesn't have local butchers; everything's shipped in from a processing plant in Timbuk Two. I also laugh at the ads that say that Walmart "works with local farmers" to get their produce. Sadly, those farmers have never heard of Vlasic or Huffy Bikes or even Levis and others that Wally World has screwed over for years.

But that's the Walmart way. They create a situation where the world kisses their ass and they win all the time. That's why I'm glad I live in a town where there's both big chains and small guys alike. Take for an example Gordy's Market near 44th and Division here in Grand Rapids. They have new owners and a new distributor, IGA after nearly 70 years as a Spartan Store. They recently remodeled and the store looks very nice now. Their meat department is full service and is all butchered and processed on site. Heck, I like talking to their butchers! You can't do that at a Walmart.

Point is, the small guy may/might not give you the best deal on food, but it's better to shop at a place that's all about the community instead of lining 1-percenter pocketbooks. If I owned a supermarket and one of my customers kept their animals in their vehicles on a hot Summer's day, I would take action, even if that meant $100 less in a week. People who neglect animals and especially children are the real bee-otches and shouldn't have them if they keep them in their car in the Summer.

Walmart: bringing 'Murica to Canada.

Like many in this whole wide world, I'm a very data-reliant guy.

For years, my internet service provider was my apartment's. Yep, they're in the media business, providing cable and internet to their many residents. But sadly, the cost is a bit much, so I've dumped cable, and I even made the decision to dump the web as well because they're a little too slow for my liking.

So, I decided to go with internet from my cell phone company, T-Mobile. They're much faster and when I'm on YouTube, it doesn't freeze often.

But, on Wednesday morning, the jig was up. T-Mobile put up a screen stating that I was beyond my free allowance on their wi-fi plan. So later that day, I called them up and asked to join their $30 per month wi-fi plan. However, they told me that it was 4 gigs for $20, 6 gigs for $30 and so on until 12 gigs for $60. So, I went with the six-gigger, thinking that it applied to the wi-fi plan.

It did not. It applied to both my cell phone and computer. Now, I was slower than a turtle with crappy 2G speeds.

So, I was on the horn with T-Mobile, and they told me that it was unlimited for a spell, but their servers kept blacking out. So, it's no longer unlimited and that once I've downloaded x amount of videos and other things that are data hogs, it will have to slow down, like it or not. I was pissed, and was thisclose to getting my old ISP back.

Thankfully, I called my apartment people, and they told me that Clear Internet was the way to go since a lot of my neighbors are using it and love it. I called them up, and within just one day, I was hooked up. It's 4G speeds and with the exception of a burp or two time and again, it's a helluva lot better than my apartment's ISP. Hell, it's faster than T-Mobile's 4G!

There you have it. T-Mobile sucks. Even worse, I'm still under contract with them. One day, I will dump them and go somewhere else. I've been a customer of theirs for years and this is bullshit. A billion-dollar company should have the capital to get high-quality servers and invest in their customers, not fuck them over.

But that's what happens when there's only four cell phone companies to choose from.

Occupation: soon-to-be former PD/OM Townsquare Media Grand Rapids, soon-to-be PD WCSX Detroit
Last Seen: Grand Rapids
Awarded For: transforming WGRD from a wuss station to a dominance in the rock world
--

Ten years ago, Grand Rapids rock radio was turning into a joke.

WKLQ had dropped Howard Stern and added on unfunny Stern clones Ron and Don and the disastrous Man Made Radio. Jocks such as Bill Walters and Mark "The Head" Feurie were canned while others like Cristi Cantle wanted out. Most of all, their fans wanted another rock station in town, but there was one problem:

WGRD.

'GRD had transitioned from "New Rock 97-9" to "Grand Rapids' Rock Alternative", and they were playing a lot of lame emo music and pop crap that turned off those needing their dose of Pantera and Metallica. Even more, their morning show sucked. Thankfully, their PD, Michael Grey was canned, but guess where he ended up? KLQ.

Enter Jerry Tarrants.

GRD knew that their ratings sucked, and something had to be done about it. Since Jerry worked all over the rock dials in the Flint area, such as Banana 101.5, Z93 and Wheelz 104.5, he found himself trying to save a Grand Rapids radio institution that needed help, now.

And he did.

Under Tarrants' leadership, GRD got themselves a popular morning show, Free Beer and Hot Wings that quickly grew amongst Grand Rapids radio fans. When WBBL and Citadel Broadcasting dropped Howard Stern once and for all, fans flocked to FB&HW. With the new male-friendly morning show, WGRD found themselves shelving the Dave Matthews and Paramore and added on Metallica, Guns 'N Roses, Godsmack and Aerosmith. They even started reporting to the trades as an active rock station (although to this day, they're still "Grand Rapids' Rock Alternative").

True, the Bill Walters, Suzy Coles, Mark Fueries and the Cristi Cantles have long moved on, but Tarrants gave us Dahmer, Shaffee and my girlfriend, Jackie. They even added a Sunday night metal show (albeit syndied): Full Metal Jackie.

Late last week, Jerry announced that he's leaving GRD and going to run WCSX in Detroit, that city's heritage classic rocker. His loss will definitely be CSX's gain. With the recent changes at sister WRIF, it'll be exciting to know what JT will bring to the table there. As for GRD, I heard that Michael Grey's back on the market (now, I'm probably going to have to slam my head against the wall for saying that).

Nonetheless, JT, you'll be missed here in Grand Rapids.

It seems that when Reagan was president, he only had one major goal: to make life miserable for those born in the 1980's and decades after that.

When my dad was born, his dad was 26 and had a decent job as a mailman. When I was born, my dad was 29 and had a good job part of the year as a bus driver for the local public school district.

Now, I'm 32, no kids and my job sucks. My plan is to get a new job if I don't get a raise within the next year. I haven't had a raise since 2003, and part of it's due to - you guessed it - the Republicans.

But, I'm not alone. The Repukes are making sure that no matter how hard you work and how well you do in high school, that once you're in college, you'll be forced to drop out while their rich oil buddies' kids have the best life ever.

Last week, student loans went up from 3.4 to 6.8 percent. House Republicans and their fearless leader John Boehner all boo-hooed Senate Democrats for not doing anything to help those in need. However, part of the reason for the holdup is the fact that the House wants a cap on spending limits while the Senate and President Obama do not.

Look, I think that if somebody wants to go to the best colleges, they should. The Repukes want poor people to go to crap schools, and that's so their kids don't have to sit with somebody from the ghetto. That's how I see it. I think the problem too is that both sides just flat-out don't see eye-to-eye, especially since the House has failed miserably to get rid of the Affordable Heathcare Act instead of creating jobs.

But, there's good news, and that's 2014's around the corner. Let's get rid of John Boehner and his thugs and get this country back to where it was before the Repukes stole the House in 2010. Let's create jobs, lower unemployment and lower student loans. And yes, let's keep Obamacare.

After all, as Whitney Houston once sang, "I believe the children are our future."

7.9.13 Hero of the Day: WebTV

A SPECIAL HERO OF THE DAY!

Awarded For: making this website possible

---

Goodbye, old friend.

It was announced last Monday that after 17 years in business, MSN TV - fka WebTV - will cease operations on September 30th. Because of low subscription numbers, the unavailability of new software (new MSN TV units were last made years ago) plus the fact that people can get on the web a lot cheaper - and faster - with cell phones and iPads, the MSN TV concept was just too antiqued to today's standards.

But, we still owe them a piece of gratitude.

In the late 90's, I was webless. Computers were too darned expensive, and was bummed out that I didn't have a piece of the web to call my own. Then, a cousin of mine heard about WebTV and soon, much of my family was rushing out to the store to get their own. I finally got my WebTV in December, 1998 as a gift from my mom.

From there, I was hooked. The internet became a part of my life thanks to WebTV. They were popular for a spell, introducing cool new features including one where anybody could create their own website. I created a site called "Bring Howard Stern to Northern Michigan Radio and TV", which evolved to this very site you're reading right now.

Of course, WebTV had its problems, especially on my end. There was no hard drive, so downloading was not possible, some websites were unreadable because they involved software like Java that WebTV did not have, and most of all, in my case, I was only given one dial-up number for the rural wasteland where I lived. It was so bad that I had to get a second web connection for an extra $20 per month so I could connect to WebTV effortlessly.

After I graduated high school, I took my WebTV to tech school and back home when I graduated. However, I moved to Grand Rapids in 2002, and since I was staying with my aunt's at the time and she lost her WebTV due to a power surge, I gave her my old WebTV as a thank you since my stepdad gave me a refurbished computer to use for downloading and such.

Since WebTV, I moved on to a 6GB computer to an 80GB unit to my current 450GB Toshiba laptop. I've also moved up in the internet connection world, too, from dialup with WebTV to DSL to cable to now, wi-fi from my 4G Android phone. I've moved on up, but I can't forget my roots.

Of course, WebTV was bought out by Microsoft about a year before I got it. It became MSN TV in July, 2001.

In recent years, MSN TV was nothing more than 1990's technology struggling to survive in the age of broadband technology. Even more, the only person I know of who still has WebTV is my 84-year-old grandmother, who uses it to connect to her family. It would be shameful if we would have to get her a computer just so she could e-mail us. But since technology cares more about us youngin's instead of little old ladies, rules are rules.

So long, WebTV, or MSN TV. Say hi to Prodigy, Jeeves, Mosaic and AOL for me, will ya?

Wait, AOL's still around? Never mind...

I guess I won't be watching Jerry Springer for a long, long time.

Last week, LIN Media, the owners of Grand Rapids' NBC affiliate WOOD-TV 8 and ABC station WOTV 41 yanked off MyNetworkTV affiliate WXSP off of WOOD-TV 8.2 for a new network called Bounce TV.

Bounce TV was started by a group of investors, including former UN Ambassador Andrew Young and Martin Luther King III. The channel's purpose is to bring programming to an adult black audience underserved by traditional broadcast networks, and for free since many channels that are aimed towards Bounce's audience are on higher-tier cable lineups, making them hard to watch from a financial standpoint.

Programming on Bounce includes Sherri Shepard-hosted episodes of The Newlywed Game, a reality show called Forever Jones about a gospel group and countless movies.

Personally, I'm not offended by Bounce TV at all. Hell, I enjoy some of their shows, including repeats of Soul Train and even the only cartoon they show, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (which is also on Saturday mornings on Retro TV WLLA 64.3 as part of their Filmation block that also features He-ManShe-RaThe Ghost Busters (no relation to the 1984 film), The Archie Show and Bravestarr). But the sad thing is that the demotion of WXSP will leave THOUSANDS without that channel. The only way people will see WXSP now is through their low-powered repeaters (their Grand Rapids repeater's over in Walker and I'm in Kentwood and can't get it on either cable or bunny ears) or cable. WXSP does have a few good shows, like SpringerCOPS and off-network repeats and it's sad that now, many of their viewers will no longer be able to see it. I know, I'll betcha that WXSP was (ahem) bounced off because of a corporate mandate since LIN is obligated to bring Bounce TV to all the markets they serve.

Bounce is also on stations owned by Fox, Nexstar and Raycom. Here in Michigan, it's also on WXYZ-TV 7.2 in Detroit and WEYI 25.3 in Saginaw/Flint.

If I were LIN, I would get rid of TheCoolTV on 41.2 once and for all. I know, I've defended that channel in the past, but 1) most of the videos they show is crap from two years ago that fell under the radar and 2) the majority of the time, it's nothing but infomercials! Besides, everybody knows that the best place for music videos these days is YouTube. LIN should kill off TheCoolTV once and for all and bring WXSP back on 41.2.

After all, I need to know who the baby daddy is-oh, wait, that's Maury.
