When The Mary Tyler Moore Show ended its run 41 years ago, the program ended with Mary closing the door to the now-shuttered office of WJM-TV.

When MASH left the air in 1983, it ended with Hawkeye seeing that BJ left a message written using stones, reading "GOODBYE".

On Cheers' last episode, Sam tells a man knocking at the door that the bar was closed. After straightening a crooked picture of Geronimo, he heads to the back.

Next season will be the last for yet another long-running program, The Jerry Springer Show. After 27 years and almost 4,000 episodes, production will end for the long-running program that critics and TV Guide long-proclaimed as the "worst program ever in the history of television".

Well, sorta.

What's really going on is that Springer is moving to The CW come next fall, replacing The Robert Irvine Show. Most episodes of the show will be repeats, though according to Springer himself, there's already many episodes shot and unaired that will be aired on its new home. If ratings are good enough, they will ask for new episodes.

So in other words, Springer ain't dead yet, though the media wants to report on his demise. Simply put, after 27 years of being syndicated, it's moving to a network, albeit with mostly repeats. If the move to The CW is successful, then it lives. If not, well, the last episode will end just like all other episodes with Springer himself reading his Final Thought, ending with the line, "take care of yourself... and each other".

When he was a guest on the MTV series Ridiculousness, Springer once said about that closer that it's his way of hoping that he can go to Heaven. This, of course, is from a man who some claim hosted a show that, well, wasn't quite all that heavenly. When the show debuted in 1992, it was simply a clone of then-sister show Donohue. It was co-produced with Sally Jessy Raphael and all three programs seemed to have the same format. With low ratings killing the show, a new production staff led by former tabloid writer Richard Dominick came in. Gone were the political talk, the father-son reunions and such and in were family feuds, strippers and KKK assholes wanting to rip Jerry apart. The ratings improved and by the late 90s, Jerry was neck-and-neck with Oprah in the ratings.

Of course, despite great ratings, the program received major lacklash from media groups, station owners, sponsors and even the program's then-syndicator, Studios USA. Some stations even demoted Springer to the overnight hours (in my case in northern Michigan, WPBN-TV 7&4 demoted it to 2 a.m. in the morning and replaced it with the beyond-abhorrent Crook and Chase program). The infamous Jenny Jones incident where a man shot and killed a gay man for outing him on the show further hurt the show's image.

To some, the news of Springer's "cancellation" was good news. For others, the response was "he's still on?" The majority of stations that carry his show are either Fox, CW or MyNetworkTV-affiliated and in the most-recent ratings books, the show's not even in the top 25 among all syndicated fare. In the past 20 or so years, the show has moved from its long-time base in Chicago to an old movie theater in Stamford, CT (ironically the home of the WWE). Also, long-time cue-balled security guard Steve Wilkos ended up with a show of his own and his wife, Michigan-born Rachelle Consiglio replaced Dominick as the producer of both shows after he was allegedly fired for telling Wilkos to beat up a guest on his show. Oh, and there's still plenty of fighting and transvestites, though the KKK freaks have nary been seen for ages.

If this is indeed the end of Springer, well, it was a good run. Jerry did well for a kid from England born in a subway tunnel to Holocaust survivors. He has lived the American dream, hosting a crazy TV show and even being the mayor of a major US city. True, he's had his faults, but he's only human. True, the show ain't Oprah, but then again, he doesn't need to cook a nice roast dinner like Rachael Ray, chat with a bunch of old ladies like on The View or even be a quack like Dr. Oz or Dr. Phil. After all, science proved that people who watch shows like Jerry's tend to lead happier lives. Maybe it's because some people have worse problems than the rest of us. After a long day at work, some simply don't want to watch a show whose audience is mostly made up of older women. They want to see a man exposed for cheating on his pretty wife with a fat, ugly woman or in the case of another of Jerry's sister shows, Maury, they want to know who the baby daddy is. Even though Springer will live on at least in reruns on The CW and NBCUniversal's Nosey digital channel, daytime TV will simply never be the same without new, fresh episodes of Springer.

And as Jerry himself says, "take care of yourself, and each other." There. Up to Heaven I go!

On Saturday morning, the world of rock was shocked and saddened when it was announced that Vinnie Paul Abbott, the founding drummer of metal legends Pantera and several other bands died in his sleep. He was 54 years old.

TMZ is now reporting that Abbott died of a major heart attack.

Vinnie was the son of Jerry Abbott, a country music producer and songwriter. In an interview, Vinnie often called his father his biggest influence into getting into music. In 1981 when Vinnie and brother Darrell were still teens, they formed what would become Pantera, named after the Spanish translation of "panther".

Throughout the 1980s, Pantera was a glam metal band. As a matter of fact, Dimebag Darrell was known as (and this is not a joke), Diamond Darrell. That all changed in the late 80s when original lead singer Terry Glaze was fired and Phil Anselmo was brought in. In 1989, they were signed by Warner Bros. imprint ATCO Records and in 1990, the band released "Cowboys From Hell", their major label debut.

Along with Anselmo's punch-to-the gut vocals, The Abbotts were the heart and soul of Pantera with Dimebag's crunching guitar licks and Vinnie's machine gun-style drumming. They ended up selling over 60 million albums around the world and also sold out arenas. Sadly, the band broke up in 2003 because of friction between the Abbotts and Anselmo, who was known for his drug problems and bashing of African Americans on stage. The Abbotts ended up forming Damageplan, whose sound was more polished and mainstream than Pantera's. Their biggest hit was "Save Me", which peaked at #16 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. Sadly, their album "New Found Power" was their one and only album. In 2004, a mentally-ill ex-Marine opened fire at one of their shows in Columbus, OH, killing Darrell. He was only 38. Shortly after his passing, tributes poured in from other rockers. Several songs, including Black Label Society's "In This River" and Nickelback's "Side of a Bullet" - which used a riff Dimebag was using while goofing off in the studio, donated by his estate to the members of Nickelback themselves - were dedicated to Dimebag himself.

Vinnie's brother's death didn't stop him. After Damageplan officially broke up, Hellyeah was born with Mudvayne's Chad Grey and fellow Damageplan bassist Bob Zilla among their members. The group released five studio albums and produced rock radio hits like "You Wouldn't Know", "Alcohaulin' Ass", "Hell of a Time", the spousal abuse anthem "Hush" and "Thank You", a song written by the band to honor family members of the band that passed away including Chad Grey's grandmother - who raised him - and of course, Dimebag.

Shortly before his untimely death, Vinnie Paul recorded the drum tracks needed for Hellyeah's sixth album. It's unknown if the album will see the light of day now with his passing. But all we know is that the Abbotts were definite rock royalty who were out there just to play good music. True, their 80s albums were pure garbage, but they knew that sometimes, the wait was well worth it and improved their sound over time. The one man I feel TOTALLY bad for is Dimebag and Vinnie's father, Jerry, for losing two sons and his wife.

The sad thing was that I've known a few people who met the Abbotts and they were stand-up people. I grew up loving their music, but since I was stuck in northern Michigan with shitty-assed KLT and radio stations that ODd on country, soccer mom music and oldies, well, I was in hell. Fuck, I cringe at the fact that during a conversation with my mom at Castle Farms many moons ago, good 'ol Terri Ray told her that Axl Rose "should eat a cracker". This, of course is in reference to Guns 'N Roses' classic "Patience" in which Rose whistles.  Oh, and let's not forget the rumor I heard that Ray would hang up on teens and young adults that wanted to hear bands like KoRn, Rage Against the Machine, Tool and others on her precious Meatles-er, Leetsville Cafe. All this of they could meet their daily quota of butt rock needed to please the assholes in North Dakota who own the station. Of course, when the Castle closed when I was a teen, good rock shows up north were too far and in-between. It seemed that the best place for a teen in northern Michigan was in the Detroit area. Thankfully, there's now Rock 105 and 95-5 (which played some Pantera tunes yesterday in tribute), plus Streeters that bring decent rock shows up north. It's too bad all this happened YEARS after I moved to Grand Rapids.

The truth is that in the end, Good rock will always live on. While I'll never meet the Abbott brothers, at least there's other great rock stars that I hope to meet in the future who will be just as legendary. I know that rock is kind of in a slump right now because of record companies overpromoting wussy-ass millennial acts, but hopefully that will all change soon.

But the good news is that for the first time in 14 years, the Abbotts can play together again.

Once upon a time, there was a radio station in Detroit at 106.7 with some memorable call letters: WWWW.

The station was nicknamed W4 and until 1981 carried a rock format. As a matter of fact, Howard Stern handled mornings there. Of course, if you've seen Private Parts, you know the story. The ratings sucked, the station flipped to country and Howard moved to Washington, DC.

For years, W4 was the top country station in the Motor City. It consistently beat country upstart WYCD in the ratings. W4 did quite well. But then, Alice came to town.

On September 3, 1999, WWWW flipped to the weirdly-named format known as rock AC and it became Alice 106.7. The ratings tanked while WYCD took away their former listeners. Alice finally died in 2002, being replaced with classic rocker The Drive.

In the 16 years since, 106.7 in Detroit has been the home of failed format after failed format. It seemed that it changed format every year or two or even less. It even flipped back to country in 2006 as The Fox, but the ratings were in the shitter. In 2009, after playing "Shutting Detroit Down" by John Rich, they flipped to rhythmic AC as The Beat. Ratings were OK, though it hurt sister station WKQI/Channel 955. In 2012, it flipped back to classic rock as The D.

Now, 106.7 in Detroit is a format it hasn't tried before: alternative. And, whad'ya know? The ratings suck. In the six months it's been on the air, the station has never been above a 1.7 share.

Supposedly, alternative is the hot format of the day. But the sad reality is that well, it isn't. True, there are a few alternative stations that do well in the ratings (i.e. KROQ Los Angeles), but for the most part, alt-rock is a ratings dud. Before Alt 106.7's arrival, Windsor's 89X was Detroit's de facto alternative station. Yet, they couldn't muster a two share in the ratings. Oddly enough, after Alt 106.7's arrival, 89X flipped to a harder rock format. It's hard to tell how they're doing in the ratings now since they're focused more on Windsor now.

Other than Alt 106.7, Michigan only has two other alt-rockers: Kalamazoo's Z96.5 and Battle Creek's 104.9 The Edge. Z96.5 does OK in the ratings, but that's because Kalamazoo's other rock stations sadly suck. The Edge, however, is on Q106's turf. With the exception of some butt rock tunes here and there and the fact that they carry Bob and Tom, Q106 ain't too bad of a station.

Michigan used to have plenty of alternative stations to choose from, even here in Grand Rapids. WGRD was alternative for a decade and a half until 2010. As an active rocker, their ratings have been pretty good. Up north, there was The Zone. From 1998 to 2000, they were a wuss station, avoiding most harder rock. However, thanks to new program director Kimberly Fox, she cleaned out the Matchbox 20, Jewel and Paula Cole (is she still alive?) and bands like Slipknot, Rage Against the Machine and Disturbed were in. The result: they ended up being neck-and-neck with KLT in the ratings. Now as Rock 105 and 95-5, they are reportedly STILL neck-and-neck with KLT.

Let's not forget that Lansing had two incarnations of The Edge. The last time around, their ratings were OK for being in a college town and all, but it was still blown up for classic country.

So, why is Alt 106.7 a dud? Simple: alternative rock in general, well, sucks. Most alt-rock stations are very wussy-sounding these days. Some of it's very slow and just too damn folksy. Plus, many of the bands that represent alt-rock nowadays won't be around much longer. Remember Fun.? They only released one album and then they broke up. The truth is that a regular, mainstream active rocker does way better in the ratings. WRIF is beating Alt 106.7 by leaps and bounds. Yet the problem is that record labels are overhyping wuss bands simply because it reaches a younger audience. OK, so why are bands like Ghost and Five Finger Death Punch outselling the likes of regular CHR artists like Dua Lipa, Halsey and even Kendrick Lamar? The simple truth is that there is a market for great, kickass rock 'n roll but the record companies all have their heads up their asses. Because of that, we have shit stations like Alt 106.7.

Let's also not forget that Alt's morning show, Woody is tape-delayed one day out of Los Angeles. Much of Alt 106.7's air talent is voicetracked out of other markets. WRIF, however has a local morning show that gets good numbers.

Question is, how long will it last? Remember, the average lifespan of a format on 106.7 in Detroit is maybe two years tops.

There's a reason why it's called alternative. It's an alternative... to ratings.
