There's a probable good reason why I'm happy that I no longer live in the Traverse City area, where I grew up:

There's a lot of stupid people.

Last week during an anti-Donald Trump rally in the Cherry Capital, a man in a black Dodge Ram showed up with an American and Confederate flag. He was seen driving around, chugging down a Bud Light.

And that man, my friend, was a Traverse City cop, Mike Peters.

And no, it's not the Mike Peters who was the lead singer of The Alarm or the editorial cartoonist behind Mother Goose and Grimm. It's a man with far less talent than either of the aforementioned.

Because of the incident, the Traverse City Police Department is now doing an investigation on Peters and his behavior. In the meantime, Peters has resigned from the force after 18 years. He had been suspended with pay.

Since Peters' act of idiocy, the pictures of his stupidity have been circulated around the world. This is not the first time Traverse City was under the spotlight regarding racism and the presidency; when Barack Obama was elected in 2008, the manager of a gun store, Hampel's hung the American flag upside down. When interviewed by the Record-Eagle newspaper, the man called Obama a "nigger". Because of the controversy, the gun shop fired him.

You know, it's sad when a man that people often turn to for help does something so idiotic. Even more, it'll give black folks yet another excuse not to go to Traverse City for vacation or even a place to live. Even worse, the area has a cop whose son is now spending 70 years in jail for murder. If I get pulled over in TC, I sure as hell don't want a racist or the father of a murderer writing me a ticket.

Even in Traverse City, the crackers can crumble.
