5.14.19 Bee-otch of the Day: west Michigan radio

On Monday morning, I was given a ride awakening by by local rock station, WGRD in Grand Rapids.

At 4:30 AM, Breaking Benjamin's latest, "Tourniquet" segued into a song that I feel has no place in modern rock radio: "Sweet Home Alabama" by overrated southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Because 'Skinner was my drunk, wife-cheating, racist pig of an ex-stepdad's favorite band, I immediately shut off the alarm and went on with my day.

Grand Rapids already has several other classic rock stations in WLAV and 101.3 The Fox-er, I mean, Brew. Why GRD needs to play butt rock recorded before I was born is beyond me. But since GRD is a service of Townsquare, well, there you go.

What's more depressing is that Cumulus recently resurrected the WKLQ call letters (warehoused on 1490 AM in Whitehall) on 94.5. Nice, but instead of active rock, those tuning in to 94.5 are forced to listen to shitty adult alternative music from shit bands like Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band and every dorky ass mandolin-playing folk band out there that pretends like it's 1915.

And so far, since its January relaunch, The Q has been 86'd by their audience. In the Winter 2019 Nielsen book, the station only mustered a 1.1, proving that AAA is NOT a good format for Grand Rapids. Granted, they're trying to go after the WYCE/NPR crowd, but since this is the company that yanked the Dixie Chicks from their stations here, it ain't working.

And speaking of Public Radio, or should I say Public REALITY Radio, their poor owner, Bob Goodrich just had to close another one of his failing theaters in Canton by Ann Arbor. The seven-screen Canton 7 could not compete against the much-nicer Emagine cinema closeby. The Canton 7 is being repurposed as a gym. Of course, this is the same Bob Goodrich who couldn't compete with the Loeks family in his own hometown of Grand Rapids. As long as he has Tyrone Bynum calling the shots and manipulating people like he did Darren Gibson, WPRR will be a flaming piece of shit.

The sad thing is that 20 years ago when I started this site in northern Michigan, I wished for a balls-to-the-wall active rock format since KLQ was a far-better station than KLT and The Zone. Now, there's Rock 105 and 95-5 and when I checked their playlist at 9:15 last night, the oldest song out of 10 listed was Nirvana's "Dumb" from 1993. Personally, I prefer a grunge ballad from a man who spoke to my generation over a shitty southern rock anthem that thousands of white trash women have been beaten up to by their mullet-topped boyfriends or husbands.

But of course, unlike my high school years, we now have satellite radio and other forms of digital media to keep us happy. I only listen to GRD for five minutes when I wake up in the morning and satellite radio for the rest of the day.

So, here's something that I wonder about: why can't Cumulus put the old rock format of WKLQ BACK on 94.5? I know, Hanlon killed it. But I think if they can lure away Free Beer and Hot Wings from GRD, it might work. Hell, when GRD hired away Rick, Scott and Darla away from KLQ c. 1995, their listeners went to GRD with them. That, of course until KLQ got smart and got Howard Stern to do mornings. I think as soon as Cumulus has more capital from their sales of WPLJ, KLOS and others, they should make that push. But will it happen? God only knows.

But personally, I think what Cumulus REALLY should have done is made 94.5 an urban station to go head-to-head with WSNX. Will that happen? Well, this is Cumulus, you know.

Just hope that they don't get Tyrone to run it.

5.13.19 Bee-otch of the Day: dollar stores

Bee-otch of the Day honors are awarded Monday through Thursday; Bee-otch of the Week is awarded Sunday morning on Chuck69.com.

Bee-otched For: wanting a chunk of my old hometown

T
You can say that my childhood town of Elk Rapids, Michigan - pop. 1600 - is your typical small town that has almost anything you want.

Don't feel like cooking? There's several restaurants, though there's no McDonald's for 10 miles. Most of the eateries in town are local joints, though there's a Subway. Need gas? There's three gas stations including a Mobil and a Shell, which are both locally owned. The third gas station is an indie that's attached to the Village Market, Elk Rapids' sole grocery store and it too, is locally-owned. ER once had four gas stations, though the aging Speedway station closed last year. There's a movie theater with only one screen, but it's well-maintained by the town's former mayor.

As far as I know, there's only one major business in Elk Rapids that is not locally-owned, and it's Gill-Roy's Hardware. The 27-store chain is based in Flint.

Now, there's another chain that's wanting to invade the small village, which is the home of the Short's Brewing Company: an unnamed dollar store.

A broker for one of the nation's largest dollar store chains wants to build a 9,000-square-feet store on Ames Street, just down the street from Village Market. The current law in the village is for new buildings to only be 3,000 square feet. Now, a public hearing is being planned for the future of the site.

Of course, the two culprits in this case are likely Family Dollar and Dollar General, or as I like to call them, Family Dollar General. Village Market has a location in the Rapid City area, which has a Dollar General and is apparently still chugging along after the Dollar General opened. Bear in mind that the Village Markets in Elk Rapids and Rapid City are closeby to the controversial Meijer store in Acme, which already claimed a Tom's Food Market as a victim.

Now, Family Dollar Generals seem to be everywhere these days, especially in small towns and even more especially in food deserts where grocery stores are miles away. My father lives near a small town in Kentucky where there hasn't been a full-service grocer since he moved there in 2001. The last grocer this town had was apparently very tiny. As a matter of fact, there's hardly any stores in this small town off of a major freeway. But, aside from a Shell station with a Subway, there's - you guessed it - a Dollar General.

Here in Michigan, there's also food desert towns and cities that have no grocers, but have a dollar store. Near my hometown of Grand Rapids, there's a few of them. In Saranac, a Dollar General has long taken up the former Adgate's Supermarket downtown. In Martin - the home of a major NHRA dragstrip - another Dollar General was built over what used to be the town supermarket, which stood since the 1890s. In many other towns in America, dollar stores have been the replacement for grocery stores. But unlike grocery stores, which have a decent selection of goods, meats and produce, dollar stores tend to sell a very limited amount of groceries mixed in with crap nobody needs. So instead of buying fresh bananas and apples, you can get one of those crazy machines that suck the blackheads off of your nose in the "As Seen On TV" section.

In Elk Rapids' case, as I've mentioned, the town is very anti-big business. The town had an A&P Supermarket in the mid-20th century. But it closed in the late 60s because it wasn't profitable enough to keep the doors open. The aforementioned Speedway closed because it couldn't compete with the other three gas stations in Elk Rapids. Last I heard, it was now an empty lot. Many years ago, a Walgreen's was planned at the corner of Ames and US-31. It was shot down because Elk Rapids already had two drug stores, both locally-owned. Hell, I went to school with a girl whose father owned one of the stores!

The point is, is that dollar stores are nice and convenient, but they'll never be a suitable replacement for grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, auto parts stores and so on. The truth is that towns like Elk Rapids are lucky to be a haven for local business and it needs to stay that way. If a town doesn't have a grocery store and has a Family Dollar General instead, then they're defeated. More money going elsewhere and less of it staying in the community.

But, hey! If your town has a dollar store and no grocer, at least you can buy one of those copper pans. Just no steak to cook it on, though.

5.9.19 Bee-otch of the Day: Amway

This Saturday, I'll be avoiding WOOD-TV 8 at all costs.

Why? Because they are airing a five-hour infomercial for Amway.

For over 40 years, the River Bank Run has been a huge part of Grand Rapids. It's grown over the years and over 22,000 runners all over the world participate in the up to 25K race.

Up until its 40th anniversary last year, the race was sponsored by Fifth Third Bank and its predecessor, Old Kent Bank. Now, as a former Old Kent/53 customer, they're not the greatest bank in the world. Do you like paying stupid fees? 53 is the bank for you. I've heard people at other banks call them "Fee Third" and deservingly so.

Well, guess who bought the race last year? Why, it's SCAMWAY!

Yep, it's now the scAmway River Bank Run. Fifth Third is still a sponsor, just not the main one.

For over 60 years, scAmway and the Devos and VanAndel families have done a yeomans job of buying Grand Rapids and slapping their names on all the buildings in town. Hell, their Fox Motors division just purchased K&M Dodge and VanAndel and Flikkema (not sure of how they're related) Chrysler/Jeep on Plainfield. In other words, that explains why John Flikkema's voice has disappeared from local radio in recent months. The VanAndel & Flikkema lot is now for new cars while K&M's lot is now Fox's used inventory.

I guess the best news about all this is that the automotive companies have prevented companies like Fox from running complete monopolies in cities like Grand Rapids. When Fox bought Seif Chevy/Buick in Caledonia several years ago, they had to drop Buick since they already have a Buick dealership on Alpine in Comstock Park. However, I live in a part of Grand Rapids where they run Ford, Nissan, Audi, Acura, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Subaru, Porsche and a Partridge in a Pear Tree.

The sad truth is that the Devoses will run EVERYTHING and buy this city with what they've got. This is a family that has made billions with a pyramid scheme and use their Republican connections to destroy not just Grand Rapids, but in the case of the nation's education system and Betsy Devos, this country. I hope I'm not the only one boycotting the race on Saturday.

Then again, I'll be in a marathon of my own: one of sleep.

Last Friday, we all learned about the gritty side of televangelists.

And that is the fact that they need to be taxed to the hilt.

As we've posted above, the TV series Inside Edition did an expose on two such assholes: Kenneth Copeland and his pal, Jesse Duplantis. The two fly in ultra-expensive jets and live in giant mansions all paid for by their ministries. When IE reporter Lisa Guerrero tried to talk to Duplantis about his lavish jet at a book signing, his security rudely put their hands on her and whisked her away.

And he's a "Christian"?

What's more sad is how in the report, IE posted a clip of Duplantis stating that if Jesus lived in modern times, he wouldn't be riding around in a donkey. OK, so has this prick ever heard of the story of Jesus and the young rich man and the camel going through the eye of the needle?

Well, Copeland was a little nicer to Guerrero, though he screamed and pointed his finger at her while crying that if he flew coach, he wouldn't be doing 65% of what he's doing now. Yeah, like ripping people off, like the woman who died of cancer because she gave Copeland her life savings instead of focusing on getting well. She was duped into giving Copeland her money because in a sermon, his plastic surgery-molded wife, Gloria told her audience that giving her and Kenneth money would cure cancer.

You know, these grifters have only done NOTHING but lie out of their asses to get what they want. I agree with the Trinity Foundation in the report that real people of God give back to their community and help those in need. The Kenneth Copelands, Jesse Duplantises, Pet Robertsons, Benny Hinns, John Hagees, Jim Bakkers and pretty much everybody on TBNs in this world live in luxury and it's sickening.

Folks, this is why IF I ever run for president, I would force all churches in America that make over a million dollars a year to be taxed 90% and that money would go to promote universal healthcare, paying off college debt and so on. Jesse Duplantis doesn't need crystal chandeliers. He needs to do the Lord's work and give to the poor and heal the sick.

No wonder why more and more people are becoming atheists.

Today, two horrible incidents occurred that could have been prevented.

In Colorado - just a few miles from Columbine High School - ANOTHER school shooting happened at STEM School, a K-12 magnet school. The shooting happened in the middle school portion of the building. Thankfully, nobody was killed, though seven people were injured. Two suspects are in custody.

Meanwhile in Georgia, that state's Republican governor, Brian Kemp signed into law one of the toughest anti-abortion laws in America. It's called the "heartbeat law", meaning that if a fetus is six weeks old and a heartbeat is detected, it cannot be aborted in the state of Georgia. I was watching Atlanta NBC station WXIA's 5pm newscast tonight and in an instant poll, 82% of viewers totally disagree with the bill.

Several other red states like Ohio and Mississippi have passed similar laws. Meanwhile, many other states have similar bills on the agenda.

Of course, critics of the bill claim that the law is unconstitutional and want to take the case to the Supreme Court. However, with the SC now having a Republican majority, this could make or break Roe V. Wade. In the meantime, since many movies and TV shows are (ahem, cue the jingle) made in Georgia, over 100 actors and crew have announced that they will plan to boycott the state because of the law. Among the TV shows shot in the Peachtree State include The Walking DeadStranger Things and Good Girls.

Many feel that what makes this shameful is that Kemp BARELY beat Democrat Stacey Abrams in the recent gubernatorial election in Georgia. On Twitter, Abrams attacked Kemp stating that the state will win in the courts and at the polls.

Ya know, I wonder why our government needs to infringe on woman's rights when they make up 1/2 of America. Plus, most Americans are leftists. Oh, I know! IT'S BECAUSE CORPORATIONS, NOT PEOPLE RUN THE FUCKING COUNTRY! It's sad when people think that a person with a (D) after their name will lead them into nothing but good things, but with what we learned in 2016, it's not the case. It's sad when Dems cry that they want to work with the Repukes and in the end, We The People get fucked. HARD.

If there is any good news, it's that my home state of Michigan has a Democratic governor - albeit a corporate one - in Gretchen Whitmer, but better her over all the fucking Repukes who have told women that it sucks to be them. Were you raped? Too bad. God sent that man to you to fuck you hard, run away and now, you have to poop out his little bastard after nine months of morning sickness and expensive doctor visits. Don't want the kid? Send it to an orphanage where it may or may not be adopted. Hell, I once knew several adoptees and some of them didn't have the best life. One of them even died.

So, should the Repuke governors kill themselves? After all, they don't have hearts.

Ya know, I really, really hate red states.

Since Drumpf took over the White House, Republicans have been busy spitting on women's rights. And one of those rights is abortion.

As I've mentioned yesterday, the governor of Ohio signed a bill banning abortion of a fetus that has a heartbeat. Since then, states have been busy trying to outdo the last one.

And now, it's Alabama's turn.

The state is considering a bill that could send people to prison for 99 years for performing abortions. It's already passed the state house and will soon end up in the state senate. The state's governor, Kay Ivey (Repuke) is pro-life and is expected to sign the bill.

Now that the Supreme Court is overwhelmingly Rethuglican, the Alabama abortion bill could cause Roe V. Wade to be overturned. Many on the right think that a fetus is human, though the idiot right thinks otherwise.

It's funny that these same assholes who are busy trying to protect the unborn could care less about them when they are born. Too many kids are born poor, without health insurance and because too many Repukes are pro-gun, these kids could end up being shot to death.

You know, I hope no Democrats in the Supreme Court die or retire until after 2020. This is the most fucked up our government's ever been and it's thanks to assholes like Drumpf who are all living a lie.

Alabama: and WHY did we allow them to be a state?

In a speech about film preservation, the late, great Hugh Hefner once proclaimed that on Sunday, he would go to church in the morning. But in the afternoon, he would go to his house of worship, which was the local movie theater.

Since the first Nickelodeon opened over a century and 20 years ago, the world has been enthralled with movies and the theaters that show them. Some theaters were huge, 1,000-seat shrines with two or three balconies. Others were tiny 300-seaters that usually played movies six months after the big town cinemas played them.

Growing up in rural northern Michigan, I never walked into a movie theater until I was seven. That was when me and several hundred elementary school kids hobbled into the Elk Rapids Cinema in Elk Rapids, Michigan for a Christmas screening of the E.T. ripoff "Mac and Me". For me, it was the first time I've ever seen a big screen movie that didn't involve the family Betamax or VHS. Oddly enough, a few weeks later, I visited my first multiplex in Phoenix, AZ. My late grandmother and I saw "The Land Before Time" while my parents saw "Rain Man".

That theater, an AMC 10-screener has since went out of business. Elk Rapids Cinema, thankfully is still showing first run favorites after 79 years in business.

Throughout my childhood, Elk Rapids Cinema was one of my favorite hangouts. When my parents split in 1993, I was blessed to live just blocks away from the theater. I spent many Friday nights at the Cinema.

Since 1972, the Cinema has been owned by Joe Yuchasz, who has been a beloved figure in the town of 1600 souls for decades. In the 1960s, the now-79-year-old owned a popular music store, the Ye Olde Music Shoppe. He also was a high school English teacher in Bellaire. When he bought the Cinema 47 years ago, it was falling into disrepair. Its roof leaked and when it rained, there were spots in the Cinema where one sure wouldn't sit. Over the years, Joe slapped on a new roof, remodeled the Cinema from top to bottom and even installed a new digital projector and sound system. All this from not asking people to donate one dime, either, while other small town theaters were forced to ask for donations when movie studios were switching over from 35mm film to digital hard drives.

Joe was also a former town mayor. Many credit him for keeping Elk Rapids a haven for locally-owned business. Very few businesses in Elk Rapids - namely Flint-based Gilroy's Hardware - are owned by out-of-towners. ER is loaded with restaurants - the only franchised fast food joint is a Mobil station Subway - t-shirt shops and condos. Even the town supermarket is family owned and there's surprisingly not a Family Dollar or Dollar General near ER.

One thing about the Elk Rapids Cinema is that Joe likes to wait a while for any movie to play at his theater. He personally told me that most studios want too much money and force smaller theaters like his to pay more profits from tickets and concessions for first-week runs. So, the new Avengers movie - which made $350 million this weekend - will have to wait, even though I'll save you some money by saying that Iron Man dies at the end. He even told me that the majority of his customers as-is are over 50. Joe even admits that he likes to show mostly critically-acclaimed movies. He even claims that Rotten Tomatoes is his home page on his internet browser.

So why he decided to show a flaming pile of crap starting this Friday is beyond me.

Yep! For one week starting Friday, the Elk Rapids Cinema will be showing "Unplanned", the recent anti-abortion movie based on a book written by a Planned Parenthood whistle blower, Abby Johnson. The film has been panned by critics for being untruthful about Planned Parenthood. The movie was made by the Christian movie studio PureFlix, the same company behind the "God's Not Dead" series.

"Unplanned" received some attention when it was revealed that $1 million of its budget came from ultraconservative pillow tycoon Mike Lindell. The movie's subject matter was so controversial that it was shot in secret and most television outlets wouldn't even air their commercials. Even several artists, including Cyndi Lauper were asked to use their songs for the movie and they all declined. Despite leaving theaters only after two weeks, it made $18 million on a $6 million budget. Not a giant blockbuster, but profitable nonetheless.

Sadly, this isn't the first time the Elk Rapids Cinema has shown an anti-abortion film. In 2012, they showed "October Baby", a film produced by the American Family Association about a young woman trying to find her birth mother who tried to abort her when she was pregnant.

Now, IIRC, Mr. Yuchasz is Catholic and it's a known fact that religious movies do well at his cinema. That's fine and all, but the truth is that Planned Parenthood is an organization that does a hell of a lot more good than bad. They provide free contraceptives and screenings for women. Only a small fraction of their business is abortion-related. Now that Drumpf is running the presidency, Roe V. Wade is getting more and more endangered. Hell, look at Ohio; their asshole governor - who looks like Ralphie from "A Christmas Story" - passed a tough bill that bars a woman from having an abortion if a heartbeat is detected. Even TEXAS wanted to pass a bill that would give women the DEATH PENALTY if their child is aborted.

You see, there's a HUGE reason I'm pro-choice. Look at dogs; when they're left at the animal shelter after a week, they're put to death. However, there's a lot of children who end up in foster care who never knew their parents and once they're 18, they're thrown onto the street. Growing up in the Elk Rapids area and out in the country, I remembered my father - who was a bus driver - picking up children who grew up in shithole trailers at the end up a long, bumpy dirt road. And because they were poor, they wore old, rotting clothes and reeked of urine. I once knew kids who never knew their fathers and never had true guidance in life. Hell, I once went to school with an adopted kid who never matured and ended up breaking the law. He ended up dying in jail when he was handed the wrong medication for schizophrenia.

I can go on, but the truth is that it's too expensive to raise a child. If a woman is raped and gets pregnant, the right thinks it's her fault. The right thinks that she needs to carry on with her pregnancy and spend nine months carrying her rapist's baby. What if the baby's born, thrown into an orphanage and grows up without parents? Don't even get me started on the logic that many pro-lifers are also pro-gun, so the kids are gonna die anyway in another mass school shooting.

Look, I love Joe Yuchasz and I've known him since I was little. I know he can't please everybody with one screen but considering that the nearest movie theater's all the way in downtown Traverse City, he should have thought this through a little better. But what the hell am I saying? I'm now in Grand Rapids and haven't seen a movie at Elk Rapids Cinema since the third Transformers flick. But if he's showing a good movie when I'm up north, I'll go there. If Michael Moore can still support the Bill Marsh auto dealership after they withdrew their support for the United Way for supporting Planned Parenthood, then I'll still support Joe.

But if I still lived in Elk Rapids, it would be one week I would NOT be going there with a 50-foot pole, or *ahem* coat hanger.
