This Saturday, I'll be avoiding WOOD-TV 8 at all costs.
Why? Because they are airing a five-hour infomercial for Amway.
For over 40 years, the River Bank Run has been a huge part of Grand Rapids. It's grown over the years and over 22,000 runners all over the world participate in the up to 25K race.
Up until its 40th anniversary last year, the race was sponsored by Fifth Third Bank and its predecessor, Old Kent Bank. Now, as a former Old Kent/53 customer, they're not the greatest bank in the world. Do you like paying stupid fees? 53 is the bank for you. I've heard people at other banks call them "Fee Third" and deservingly so.
Well, guess who bought the race last year? Why, it's SCAMWAY!
Yep, it's now the scAmway River Bank Run. Fifth Third is still a sponsor, just not the main one.
For over 60 years, scAmway and the Devos and VanAndel families have done a yeomans job of buying Grand Rapids and slapping their names on all the buildings in town. Hell, their Fox Motors division just purchased K&M Dodge and VanAndel and Flikkema (not sure of how they're related) Chrysler/Jeep on Plainfield. In other words, that explains why John Flikkema's voice has disappeared from local radio in recent months. The VanAndel & Flikkema lot is now for new cars while K&M's lot is now Fox's used inventory.
I guess the best news about all this is that the automotive companies have prevented companies like Fox from running complete monopolies in cities like Grand Rapids. When Fox bought Seif Chevy/Buick in Caledonia several years ago, they had to drop Buick since they already have a Buick dealership on Alpine in Comstock Park. However, I live in a part of Grand Rapids where they run Ford, Nissan, Audi, Acura, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Subaru, Porsche and a Partridge in a Pear Tree.
The sad truth is that the Devoses will run EVERYTHING and buy this city with what they've got. This is a family that has made billions with a pyramid scheme and use their Republican connections to destroy not just Grand Rapids, but in the case of the nation's education system and Betsy Devos, this country. I hope I'm not the only one boycotting the race on Saturday.
Then again, I'll be in a marathon of my own: one of sleep.
