At least he should be happy that it wasn't the Fox News Channel that killed his company - no wait, it's helping.
The great and almighty Keith Rupert Murdoch is busy trying to save his $33 billion media empire. Last week, it was revealed that throughout the 2000's, his News of the World newspaper in England's reporters were using illegal methods of news gathering, such as wiretapping. They tapped into phone conversations with victims of the 7/7 disaster and it was just announced that even victims of 9/11 were tapped as well. Also tapped was former Prime Minister Gordon Brown whose personal conversations made it onto the pages of the NOTW .
When the scandal erupted last week, Murdoch did some damage control and shut down the paper, leaving 300 souls jobless. Its last issue hit stands last Sunday, ending 168 years of being one of Britain's top papers.
What did them in was reports that a P.I. hired by the paper was hacking the phone of murdered 13-year-old Milly Dowler, kidnapped and murdered on the way to school by a serial killer now serving life behind bars. The wiretapping interfered with police investigations and even angered her parents. The investigations grew to other various victims, even those killed in Bush's fake wars.
One reason for the shutdown is due to NewsCorp's now-troubled deal to purchase the 61% of pay TV service BSkyB that it doesn't own. Since the announcement of the scandal, the company's stock has fallen immensely - 7% yesterday alone - but, they are announcing plans to create a Sunday edition of NOTW's sister paper, The Sun .
NewsCorp also owns The Times. All three papers have/had a conservative slant (if I'm ever in England, I might as well read The Guardian or The Independent ).
One sad situation is the fact that one of the editors during the NOTW scandal, Rebekah Brooks still has a job as the chief executive of News International, which handles Uncle Rupert's newspaper holdings in England. Yet, somebody just doing their job was shown the door.
You know, there's a reason why Rupert Murdoch is worth $8 billion. He makes a product of sensationalism garnered towards those whose IQ is at room temperature. If my private conversations were made public, I'd be pissed to the point where I would sue that person who spied on me.
I think for the time being, I'll boycott as much of Fox as possible. I don't want to support anybody who doesn't believe in privacy. It's sick that anybody would go far enough to make a buck off of tragedy by tapping into private conversations. I think Rupert needs to sell off his company and hide under a rock for the rest of his life.
Thank God for Keith Olbermann and Current.
