For the past few months, we've been talking about the unfortunate dismissal of Smitty from Rock 105 and 95-5 in northern Michigan.
Smitty was the face and voice of the popular active rock station, and now, he's been reduced to being a bartender at Right Brain Brewery in Traverse City. He had the #1-rated afternoon radio show among 18-34-year-olds up north and he was let go over Tom Devitt's bullshit.
Now, Devitt has hit a new low.
If you go to WKLT's website during his 2p-7p show, they advertise him as (get ready for it...) The King of Afternoon Radio.
Really?!? The fucking King of Afternoon Radio? Says who? Obviously, not the ratings. My source tells me that KLT was second place in the ratings in the most-recent book behind WTCM-FM. So, sorry, Tom, but Mike Sinclair is the *real* King of Afternoon Radio. At least as far as we know, Mr. Sinclair wasn't fired from four radio stations, didn't troll a popular radio and TV message board to overly promote his crappy radio show, never hid under several different usernames on that message board to harass people, didn't have to deliver pizza between firings, never phoned it in because he was lazy and so on. The only thing I've noticed that Sinclair ripped off was the name "Backspin" where he plays a classic country track, and that's the name of the classic hip-hop channel on Sirius. Oh, well, nobody's perfect.
That's the problem with Tom Devitt: despite being fired, even from a crappy little station in Michigan's thumb, the assclowns at Northern Broadcast see worth in him and that's why he has two radio gigs, the other being a host on their ESPN station. Sadly, there's people who've worked with him who all agree that he was a dick and was simply lazy. This was why he ripped a lot of his show off of others and Smitty was his target. In the end, he won simply because he lied to Rock 105/95-5's sponsors. Of course, the only thing keeping him on the air is the fact that Blarney Stone Broadcasting, which owns Q100 out of Grayling is in a purchasing agreement with NBI and cannot fire anybody until they buy KLT, ESPN Up North and 94.3/92.5 The Fox outright. No papers have been filed with the FCC, so the deal is a no-go and sadly, Devitt has job security for now.
But in the meantime, Tom Devitt remains a king of this type.
