For nearly 40 years, the brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein had been looked at as Hollywood revolutionaries.
They named their little independent film studio after their parents, Mariam and Max and from there on, they took us into many worlds. Some of those places were inhibited by two stoners hanging outside of a convenience store, or Los Angeles hitmen or into the world of a hospital during World War II. Of course, the Weinsteins left their own company (named Miramax, of course) seeking more creative control when Disney kept dicking into their business decisions. In 2005, they founded The Weinstein Company and continued the tradition that they started with Miramax.
Some of TWC's best-known films include Rob Zombie's "Halloween", Quentin Tarantino's "Inglorious Basterds" and "The Hateful Eight" and Michael Moore's "Sicko" and "Capitalism: A Love Story". Two of their films, the silent "The Artist" and "The King's Speech" both won Oscars for Best Picture.
Now, TWC's status as one of Hollywood's most-prestigious film studios is uncertain as one of the Weinsteins has fallen from grace.
Several days ago, news of Harvey Weinstein's sexual encounters started taking center stage in the Hollywood community. Over 20 actresses and staffers of Weinstein's all admitted that he sexually harassed or assaulted them. Among the A-listers include Rosanna Arquette, Cara Delevingne, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan, Gwyneth Paltrow, Léa Seydoux and Mira Sorvino. Apparently, Weinstein paid off several actresses over the years to shut them up.
Weinstein has apologized for his actions, but many have condemned him for what he did. Since the story broke, his wife, Georgina Chapman has left him, several celebrities such as former President Obama and Hillary Clinton - two people whom he supported politically - have condemned him and worst of all, he's no longer with the company he and his brother founded and created much success with.
It's sad when you're well-respected for decades and now, you're a big pile of shit. Look at Joe Paterno. Look at Bill Cosby. Look at OJ Simpson.... The list keeps growing. Hell, there was a beloved British celebrity, Jimmy Savile who was a beloved TV and radio personality and was knighted by the Queen for his work with sick children. It wasn't until after his death that it was discovered that he molested HUNDREDS of people, men and women, young and old. Because of this, the BBC refuses to air any of his old shows.
The questions remain. Will Harvey Weinstein's career recover? Will TWC have to change its name? Only the future knows.
Maybe the stuff Jay and Silent Bob sell in front of the Quick Stop might help him a little bit.
