This has been a depressing past few weeks for the NRA since the untimely shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL.
Since all our politicians did was send their "thoughts and prayers", people have been bashing the pro-gun wackjobs for trying to keep semi-automatic weapons legal despite recent mass shootings in Parkland, Orlando and Las Vegas that have all killed over 100 people. Now, America is turning their backs against the NRA since a few days ago, several companies such as Hertz, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise and Budget Rent-a-Car, United and Delta Air Lines, MetLife and Symantec have all stopped giving discounts to NRA members.
Sadly, there are still a few companies that are still partnering with the NRA. Apple, Roku, Amazon and YouTube still air the NRA's content while Google and Omni Hotels are still supporting the organization.
Now, the NRA has been given one of its biggest slaps in the face.
Today, Dick's Sporting Goods, one of America's largest sports retailers announced sweeping changes in the way they sell guns. Chairman and CEO Edward W. Stack announced that they will no longer sell semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity magazines and will only sell guns to those over 21 years old. In Mr. Stack's statement, he also called for legislators to ban assault-style weapons, raise the minimum age of buying guns to 21, ban high-capacity magazines and bump stocks, enable a universal background check program to bar those with mental issues and a criminal past to buy guns and close the private sale and gun show loophole where anybody can buy a gun.
Since Dick's announcement made earlier today, only a small number of major retailers still sell semiautomatic weapons, including Bass Pro Shops/Cabela's and Camping World/Gander Outdoors. No word if those retailers will join Dick's in pulling out of the semiautomatic weapon business.
I would hope that other retailers will join Dick's in their fight to curb gun violence in America. But since it's still legal to buy semiautomatics here in the USA, I know that there will be some diehard ma-n-pa gun shop owners who will all think that Dick's are a bunch of snowflakes and they will join the NRA and sell whatever gun they want to whomever they want. If the gun they sell causes scores of people to die, sucks to be the victims since none of them had a gun of their own to stop that perp. But, hey, they'll have plenty of thoughts and prayers to send.
Look, I'm pro-gun and very pro-Second Amendment. My family has had a deer cabin in the deep rural Upper Peninsula of Michigan since the late 1920s and they still hunt there. However, I doubt if the Founding Fathers of this great nation would ever allow these killing machines as real arms since all they've been designed for is killing people. I have no problem with people killing deer or wild game, but if you have a problem with people, you need serious help.
Since Dick's pulled out, so should the NRA.
