Last night, I tried to tune into Club 104-5 on WSNX. Within maybe 30 seconds, I turned my radio off.
Why? Because they were airing two songs at the same time. And this is west Michigan's highest-rated Top 40 station.
Last week, the Nielsen ratings were released for Grand Rapids and talk about laughable. The #1 station in town isn't WSNX. It isn't B93 or LAV, either and put those GRD and WOOD Radio guesses away.
As a matter of fact, the most-popular radio station in Grand Rapids isn't owned by either iHeartMedia, Cumulus or Townsquare. It's locally owned by a religious school.
The big winner in the Spring 2019 radio Nielsen ratings is none other than 91.3 WCSG, the Cornerstone University-owned Christian AC station for soccer moms. They scored an 8.5 while the most-listened-to secular station was iHeart's Country B93 with a 7.9.
Hate Talk WOOD Radio, Classic Rock WLAV and Michigan Public Radio rounded the top five.
If there were two stations that got the shit kicked out of them this time around, it was the aforementioned WSNX and Rocker WGRD. Both scored their lowest books in ages. Maybe it's explaining why WGRD is trying to cut back on the 1970s butt rock that they introduced to their playlist some time ago. But still.
One of the sad things worth mentioning is that the Active Rock format is sadly disappearing from the terrestrial radio dial. You can thank corporate radio for doing that. The trades don't even have Active Rock charts anymore since they merged Active Rock and Mainstream Rock together. Because of this, it's allowing once ass-kicking rock stations like GRD a license to play shitty bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Styx and Kansas. Sorry, but if I want to hear KoRn, Slipknot and Five Finger Death Punch, I don't want to hear the same shit my drunk, racist ex-stepdad jams out to.
Sadly, the Nielsens are very lopsided, especially on Cumulus' part. It's cool that they FINALLY killed WBBL (and its replacement, The Ticket has a .5). But WTF is up with Country Thunder 107.3 and AAA 94.5 The Q? The Neilsens claim that 94.5 has a 1.8 - par for the course for a AAA - but Thunder is at a big, fat ZERO. Or is it that Thunder has a 1.8 and The Q is at a zero? Yeah, that makes sense since I see little-to-no promotion for The Q anywhere.
And let's not forget good 'ol WPRR Public Reality Radio 1680, tied with throwaway Talker WTKG 1230 and Muskegon Oldies WLCS. I wonder how good 'ol Tyrone is doing? Too bad I don't have their ratings from when Darren Gibson was running the place, but from what I've been told, Tyrone is running the place into the same ground he threw the now-defunct WMFN 640. Oh, well.
And what about 101.3 The Brew? SMH. Talk about a fucking abortion with a 1.5. It's been Classic Rock since 2001 and it's never made any headway in the ratings. I don't know why the fuck iHeart keeps them in business. Maybe it's because it's cheap to run with its fake, out of town jocks and shitty morning show based out of Cleveland.
Yes, the corporate radio svengali of west Michigan is a joke. The fact that a Christian radio station funded by its listeners and once had a morning DJ who is now serving 40 years in jail for raping two young boys (WCSG = We Crave Sexy Gradeschoolers) is kicking all their asses proves a point. Now, I would hate to see more Christian radio stations in west Michigan. We already have Joy 99.3 and WFUR (and yes, they still exist), so why should local radio's big three sink their claws into CCM?
Here's an idea: HOW ABOUT URBAN/HIP-HOP?!?! Yes, Magic 104.9 is nice, but a station like WJLB in Detroit could do great in Grand Rapids. Classic Hip-Hop might do well here, too. The point is, not every radio listener in Grand Rapids is lily white. Hell, a real FM Spanish station might be OK, too.
If Grand Rapids radio doesn't change soon, we'll be all going to Jesus... Or internet or satellite radio.
