It was John Lennon who said it best that Instant Karma's gonna get you.

Years ago, I was pissed that WJML 1110 in Petoskey dropped Ed Schultz for Alex Jones. Yes, somebody with a brain replaced with one with a tinfoil hat.

But then again, karma hit WJML a long time ago since if you go to their website, it's now a stupid shopping site. Plus, they no longer stream.

For years, Alex Jones has claimed that the Sandy Hook massacre - which killed 20 elementary school children and six adults - never really happened. Basically, he said all this to simply try to protect the Second Amendment. After all, this is the same guy who gave us this.

Now, several families who lost loved ones at Sandy Hook are suing Jones for spreading lies about the melee. So, what does Jones do? Send the families' lawyers child porn.

Because of the fact that Jones based his theories on crisis actors on nothing, he apparently sent the families' lawyers child porn so he could win his trial easily. Well, he was caught and now, the judge in this trial has sanctioned Jones, not allowing him to dismiss the trial and he'll have to pay the Plaintiffs' attorney fees.

The sad thing is that Jones even admitted that his Infowars shtick is an act when his ex-wife was suing for full-time child custody. Even worse is the amount of celebrities that I know have appeared on his fake-ass show, like Willie Nelson, Billy Corgan and even Mike Judge, who used his Beavis and Butt-head and Hank Hill voices as a show bumper.

But thankfully, the truth is out. Social media sites have even banned Jones and thankfully, some radio stations - including WJML - have canned his show (sadly, all con-talkers up north sans WTCM have carried Jones at one time or another). The fact that he spread a sick and disgusting lie to support his preservation of the very lack of gun laws that created Columbine, Parkland, Las Vegas, Orlando and YES, SANDY HOOK IN THE FIRST PLACE shows the complete lack of compassion he has. Since he uses the power of the media to spread lies, the FCC needs to shut his ass down and fine the stations that air his bullshit.

Let's hope that he can't do a radio show from jail.

6.11.19 Bee-otch of the Day: Universal Music Group

Bee-otch of the Day honors are awarded Monday through Thursday; Bee-otch of the Week is awarded Sunday morning on Chuck69.com.

Name: Universal Music Group

Bee-otched For: going up in smoke

It was a tragic day in 2008 when a maintenance man's blowtorch caused a wild, catastrophic fire at the Universal Studios lot in Hollywood.

The fire destroyed a King Kong exhibit and worst of all, a warehouse that stored over 40,000 video copies of movies and TV shows chronicling Universal's 100-plus years in business. After the fire, a Universal exec stifled rumors that they were the master prints, claiming that they were simply copies. The original prints of the films were kept in various vaults, including an old mine in Pennsylvania.

Now, the studio is trying to put out another fire of its own: the fact that the fire destroyed more than we thought.

The New York Times revealed in a confidential memo written shortly after the fire that 500,000 individual recordings were all destroyed in the blaze. They included classic recordings from Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry, The Andrews Sisters, Benny Goodman and Fats Domino. Plus, later 20th century gems from Al Green, Elton John, Eric Clapton and Neil Diamond. Many 1990s and 2000s-era recordings from Nirvana, Snoop Dogg, Soundgarden and Eminem were all believed to have perished in the blaze.

When the Times report was released early today, Universal released a statement, stating "While there are constraints preventing us from publicly addressing some of the details of the fire that occurred at NBCUniversal Studios facility more than a decade ago, the incident – while deeply unfortunate – never affected the availability of the commercially released music nor impacted artists’ compensation.  Further, the story contains numerous inaccuracies, misleading statements, contradictions and fundamental misunderstandings of the scope of the incident and affected assets.  In fact, it conveniently ignores the tens of thousands of back catalog recordings that we have already issued in recent years – including master-quality, high-resolution, audiophile versions of many recordings that the story claims were “destroyed."

Many in the business - including Spin Magazinewhom I sourced today's BOTD from - are saying that Universal is full of shit. Many well-known tunes sadly only exist as copies and lack the quality the original masters had. Hell, even Mike D of The Beastie Boys admitted that he doesn't know where the masters to their 1986 album "Licensed to Ill" are.

The sad truth is that many of the big entertainment companies that have been around since the early 20th century - i.e. Universal, Warner Bros., Paramount, Fox, MGM and Disney - plus the major broadcast networks all have lost media. The majority of the silent movies made before 1929 are lost forever because the studios destroyed or neglected them all. Many long-lost silents have ended up in film vaults in eastern Europe turning into one pile of nitrate dust. The same goes with old TV shows. Before the age of cable TV, home video and streaming, NBC, CBS and ABC would reuse tapes of everything from soap operas, game shows and even sporting events like the first Super Bowl for other TV programs. I've even read that ABC reused tapes of the 1971-75 run of Password for Family Feud. Now that we have channels like Game Show Network and Buzzr, I'll betcha that those networks are PISSED that they wiped all those shows.

I know, recordings of all those tunes wiped away in that fire will live on. We'll still have Nirvana's "Nevermind" and Soundgarden's "Superunknown" for centuries to come since unlike silent movies and old TV shows, people are allowed to have copies today. **WARNING: BABA BOOEY "PIECES OF VINYL" TALK AHEAD** However, in this age in which vinyl outsells CDs by a mile and a half, those who ACTUALLY buy records know that vinyl has a fuller, richer sound than a digital CD. So yes, that copy of "Superunknown" that I bought in 1995 should sound better today if it were remastered from the original tapes if I were to buy a vinyl version of it right now.

Over time, recordings will lose layers of sound quality, or as they call them, generations if one tape is recorded off of the master, and that master is recorded onto another recording and so on. It's like this YouTube video. So centuries from now, if one wants to listen to Eminem, he'll sound like he has diarrhea spewing out of his mouth.

It's important that ALL media over time is saved. OK, maybe not a blank screen when the local TV station experiences technical difficulties, but we're talking about everything from local newscasts to other local shows. Music, movies and so on should be saved for posterity. Universal should be shamed for not admitting that the recordings destroyed in that blaze were the originals. If audiophiles discover that the vinyl copy they bought of Nine Inch Nails' "The Downward Spiral" was mastered off of an old CD, they have every right to be pissed.

At least some forms of the recordings exist, especially of dead artists. If I were to buy a Nirvana album and it's really a karaoke album, I'm suing.

6.10.19 Bee-otch of the Day: Sinclair Broadcast Group

BECOME AN AFFILIATE OF T-SHIRT HELL AND MAKE SOME MONEY!

Bee-otch of the Day honors are awarded Monday through Thursday; Bee-otch of the Week is awarded Sunday morning on Chuck69.com.

Sadly, in any business, the boss is always right.

Even if he or she is wrong, they're right.

One man, Joe Crain, is learning the hard way about that statement.

He was a meteorologist for WICS-TV in Springfield, Illinois, an ABC-TV affiliate. Last week, he put up a "Code Red" alert, which is designed to warn people about severe weather days ahead of the National Weather Service's warnings. However, many claim that the Code Red alerts are simply a way for WICS and other Sinclair stations to sensationalize its newscasts. Some even joke that stations are forced to put up Code Red alerts even on a cloudy day.

In Crain's case, he was upset that Sinclair brass made him put up a Code Red alert on a newscast last week because there was only a SLIGHT risk of thunderstorms on a Wednesday. On that Monday, Crain told his viewers that the Code Red alerts weren't his idea, but rather Sinclair corporate's. He told viewers that he's heard all the complaints about WICS's Code Red Alerts and he's with them.

Since that broadcast aired, Crain's profile is now off WICS's website. Now, his fans are attacking their Facebook page with their disgust of them firing Crain. Messages include "#freejoecain" and messages about how Sinclair has cheapen local newscasts over the past several years.

Sinclair is one of America's largest broadcasters. Here in west Michigan, they own WWMT-3 (CBS) and CW7. In other parts of the state, they use shell companies to control more than one station in the market, squeaking by the FCC's requirement of companies owning only one station per market depending on market size. They have two stations in Traverse City (WPBN-7&4 (NBC) and WGTU 29&8 (ABC)) and three stations in the Flint area (WEYI 25 (NBC), WBSF CW 46 and WSMH Fox 66). Hell, in the case of WWMT-3, they're licensed to Kalamazoo, but their IDs claim that they're from Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo/Battle Creek. In ANY station ID, they can use Grand Rapids and Battle Creek as long as Kalamazoo is mentioned first. Well, what WWMT is doing is a no-no.

Sadly, Sinclair is turning their local newscasts into cookie cutter pieces of shit with must-air mandated segments like the Terror Alert Desk and ultra-right-winged Russian commentator Boris Epshteyn. Some of their stations have even resorted to airing the segments early in the morning when viewership is low.

Now that the controversy regarding Cain is gaining a lot of attention, word has it that advertisers are leaving WICS in droves. So far, four advertisers have pulled their ads from the station and simulcaster WICD-20 in Champaign. Among them include a chain of Ace Hardwares.

Since Reagan killed the Fairness Doctrine in 1987 and the 23 years since Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the overall quality of television and radio journalism has gone down the shitter. Thankfully here in Grand Rapids, we DON'T have to watch WWMT's newscasts since IMHO WOOD-TV does a helluva better job, plus Nexstar doesn't forcefeed right-winged idiocy down their viewers' throats. OK, so Old Man Steffen is a climate change denier, Rick Albin has worked for the Repukes and they do newscasts downtown when fArtPrize is in session, but nobody's perfect. Fox 17 gets a lot of news from Fox News Channel and a lot of the women on WZZM-13 are hambeasts.

Sadly, I feel worse for northern Michigan and the fact that Sinclair owns my childhood NBC affiliate, WPBN 7&4 (NBC) and through a shell company, WGTU ABC 29&8. Over the air, only two full-power stations do newscasts. The other is locally-owned WWTV 9&10 (CBS), although through a (SURPRISE!) shell company, they own WFQX Fox 32. Like 7&4 does for 29&8, 9&10 produces newscasts for Fox 32. Thankfully, there's WMNN "MiNews 26", but their signal's very weak outside of Cadillac.

The point is, instead of making the media better for all of us, the government - both Rs and Ds - have fucked it all up. Instead of real, fair and balanced news, we have stupid Code Red bullshit every time there's a cloud in the sky. In the olden days, if you had a talk radio format, if you aired Rush Limbaugh, Thom Hartmann would have to air afterwards. Now, AM radio is all-Rush 24/7.

But yes, we have a choice. If we don't want right-winged shit on our TVs, we can always boycott their sponsors. Same goes with all of Sinclair's stations. IIRC, they were close to bankruptcy many years ago.

Let it happen again.

6.6.19 Bee-otch of the Day: terrestrial radio

Howard Stern always has, and always will be the King of All Media.

True, I do miss him having strippers in the studio and his latest book is mostly transcripts of his shows, but he's still better than the crappy-assed excuses of morning radio out there.

This week, Howard and the gang have been talking about the death of terrestrial radio, especially last week's demise of 95.5 WPLJ in New York City. As we all know by now, WPLJ was sold to Christian broadcaster Educational Media Foundation and is now simulcasting their K-Love Christian Contemporary format. For almost 50 years, it had those legendary call letters, an homage to Frank Zappa's cover of an old doo-wop tune from the 1950s. At first, WPLJ was a rock station, but morphed to a CHR format in the 1980s and finally Hot AC.

WPLJ's parent, Cumulus sold the station and several others for $100 million. Another sold station was another long-time rocker, Los Angeles' KLOS, also at 95.5. However, their new owners plan to retain its format.

Also this week on the Stern Show, Howard and the gang got to hear another Tradio call from Richard and Sal. This time, the two picked on a DJ who was leaving radio after 45 years to go work for a water treatment facility. Howard commented that it's sad that something like water has a better future than radio and ya know what? He's right.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be in radio. But after hearing that most DJs get paid shit wages, I decided to look for another job. Even though I got stuck with an asshole boss for 10 years, I'm now getting paid a helluva lot more than most DJs.

I look at Smitty, formerly of northern Michigan's Rock 105 and 95-5. He left radio for good earlier this year to work for Right Brain Brewery in northern Michigan. I also read that Ida the night jock from crosstown WKLT quit to focus on her home-based businesses. And guess who replaced her on the night shift? NOBODY! Yep! Good 'ol Otto Mation is playing the butt rock melodies that make up KLT's playlist. Sad, since back in the day, KLT had a request show at 11 pm at night. Nowadays, radio stations are doing away with overnight jocks and now, night jocks. Up in northern Michigan, only sister station 94.3/92.5 The Fox and 106 KHQ have local night shows. Here in Grand Rapids, B93 and WLAV are the only stations I can think of that still have live and local night shifts.

And yes, all the rest of the stations out there either use simple automation or a satellite show for their night shifts.

The sad truth is that radio is only getting worse and worse all thanks to government bills like Telecom 96 letting big corporations take over more and more media entities. Plus, technology has gotten a lot more smarter. When I was 14, I visited WKLT's old studios on Garfield Ave. in Traverse City. Back then, they had a massive CD automation system that took up a corner of the room. Today, my smartphone can carry more tunes than that. Hell, if I had the proper automation software and even a mini transmitter, I can start my own radio station off of my laptop!

(And no, I don't have plans on that happening.)

Of course, let's not forget the SiriusXMs, the Pandoras and the Spotifys of this world. In Spotify's case, you can even create your own personal station only playing your favorite tunes. So, if you love hard rock but hate Nickelback and Creed, Spotify is for you. Just type in a bunch of tunes and viola! You have your very own kick-ass radio station. Call it WYOU if you want (just don't tell the CBS affiliate in Scranton, PA) or if you're on the west coast, KYOU (ditto for the dual Fox/NBC outlet in Ottumwa, IA).

July 1st will mark Chuck69.com's 20th birthday. The reason why I started this site was to tell the local media in northern Michigan that they needed to wake up. Some of it has improved, some of it hasn't. At least Howard Stern's now heard everywhere on SiriusXM and northern Michigan has a decent Active Rock station in Rock 105/95-5. Hell, there's even Q100, which has a 6,700-song playlist and has a devout following. However, KLT is almost a complete butt rock station and for the most part, most radio stations ANYWHERE don't bill as much as they used to. Then again, maybe this is karma for the fact that 20 years ago, the only radio station up north that reached out to my generation was the now-defunct 106.7 The Peak. KLT and The Bear only cared about machine shop workers and The Zone - which morphed into Rock 105 and 95-5 - ODd on Lilith Fair wuss music. Today, Rock 105 and 95-5 are almost neck-and-neck with KLT while The Bear - even with once-popular KLT morning host Omelette in morning drive is almost dead last in the ratings.

Grand Rapids, however, isn't much better than northern Michigan. WGRD plays a lot of shitty butt rock from Def Leppard and Lynyrd Skynyrd, but at least they're local from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. as opposed to Rock 105 only being local for afternoons. And at least we here in GR don't have to sit through Terri Ray.

But sadly, the days of personality-driven nighttime radio are becoming looooonnnnng gone.

Sometimes in life, you get what you pay for.

Recently, my aging, rusty old bathtub was replaced with a new, sleeker fiberglass model. So, it was fitting that I should get a new shower curtain and hooks. I was thinking about going to Bed, Bath and Beyond for the shower stuff.

However, I needed ink for my printer. My local Best Buy in Grand Rapids was next to the hybrid TJ Maxx/HomeGoods and there was a storm coming. So, I figured that it would be no harm and no foul going there vs. going further down 28th Street to BBB.

Bad idea.

TJ Maxx's selection of hooks and curtains sucked. At this location, all they had was clear plastic. Not willing to drive all the way to BBB, I said "fuck it" and bought the shit they had. Well, I went home in the driving rain and installed the new hooks and liner. Worst. Hooks. Ever. They didn't roll down my shower rod easily and it reminded me of nails on a chalkboard. So, after consulting with mother, I decided to return the items to TJ's in hopes of getting my money back.

Well, it was like pulling teeth.

I returned to TJ's with the hooks and curtain, plus my receipt. I get to the cashier and she went to the manager. Well, she came back and told me that the hooks might not be refundable. The manager came and made a BFD about what I returned. She bitched that she only counted 15 hooks and I KNOW all 16 were in there. She also was insulting me and so on. She made me feel bad for returning their shitty products. The only good that came out of that confrontation is that I did get my full refund.

I ended up getting my hooks from BBB the next day and they work well. As for the curtain itself, surprise, surprise, I got it from Dollar General. My mom actually liked it!

TJ Maxx and HomeGoods is owned by TJX Companies, which also owns Sierra - also at The Shops at Centerpoint, aka Eastbrook Mall - and Marshall's, which just opened in the same strip that has ABC Whorehou-er, ABC Warehouse, Burlington and another store that just opened, Bob's Discount Furniture.

Now, I've shopped all four of those stores and my degree of success with them has varied. I've bought luggage and jeans from TJ's and Marshall's and they're all good. Underwear, however, is a joke. I've bought a pack from Sierra and it was the worst I've ever bought. It rode up my asshole and it made my thighs kiss and rash up. The ones I purchased from Marshall's were better, though; however, it didn't have a slot to whip my dick out to go pee.

Tragically, this WASN'T the first time I've ever returned something to a TJX store. A few years ago, I bought a shower head from HomeGoods and it was missing a part. Turns out that somebody returned it to the store and they put it back on the shelf with missing parts.

But'cha know, I think there was a good reason that manager was a bitch to me: she works in retail and probably hates it. Today at a Walmart meeting, Bernie Sanders confronted company executives for paying their employees "starvation wages" while the Waltons are worth $175 million. The same goes for other retailers. I remember going to Walgreen's and the cashier was bitching about being on an EBT card. Hmmm... Doesn't Walgreen's promote that Red Nose bullshit where they ask their customers to donate to that cause? Here's a better idea: PAY YOUR FUCKING WORKERS A LIVABLE WAGE!

This is why I plan to do more shopping at Costco from now on. Now that I'm a member, it makes me happy that their average worker gets paid $20 per hour and even part-timers get good benefits. And guess what? COSTCO IS PROFITABLE!

Because of my bad experiences, I plan to avoid any TJX store at all costs from now on. Sorry, but I work my ass off daily. If my want to buy a thong, I'd be going to Victoria's Secret.

Funny how TJ Maxx was a descendant of Zayre, a defunct retailer named for a Jewish phrase "zehr gut", meaning "very good". Why? Because too many times, I, who am not a Jew has uttered "oy vey" upon leaving one of their stores.

After so many years of people in Flint being poisoned by filthy water, the Stuffed Turd who caused all this might be getting closer to prison.

Authorities seized pRick Snyder's government-issued phone and 65 others in hopes of incriminating him and others for switching Flint's water system from Lake Huron to the polluted Flint River in 2014. The switch over caused an outbreak of Legionnaire's Disease and the deaths of several people.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Snyder and his Nazi-like policies by taking over predominately black cities like Flint, Benton Harbor and several others have failed miserably. The fact that Nestle now pumps billions of dollars out of our Great Lakes for only $200 per year while airing stupid ads on local TV about preserving the Muskegon River shows that they are a two-faced company and Snyder let them off easily.

If there's one person who needs applause in all this, it's Attorney General Dana Nessel. Unlike other Democrats, she has the balls to look into Snyder's vile past and why he would EVER want to put the people of Flint's lives at stake. Hell, Obama deserves a kick in the ass for taking a simulated sip of Flint water while speaking at an event several years ago. The fact that the Flint water crisis is one of the WORST environmental crisis in HISTORY is an embarrassment to all Americans.

The fact that many fellow Repuke governors are creating retarded anti-abortion laws and yet Snyder ruined the lives of many a Flintstonian only makes me proud that I never voted for a Repuke and never will. This is further proof that the Dems need to be more progressive, period. Look at Louisiana and their asshole DEMOCRAT governor who just passed another dumbassed "heartbeat bill". Just because there's a (D) after their name doesn't make them a real Democrat. "Vote blue no matter who" is an understatement. To me, it's like a former co-worker of mine who loved WKLQ here in Grand Rapids AFTER they canned Stern and fired most of their good jocks. One time, he was like, "did you hear on Opie and Anthony this morning blah blah blah..." Sadly, he was the only person in Grand Rapids who LOVED that shit show. Well, there's a reason why KLQ died a sad, pathetic death, and Metallica, Disturbed and Godsmack were not the culprits.

Even though Gretchen Whitmer is a moderate who gets her butthole licked by Blue Cross/Blue Shield - which is why universal healthcare in Michigan will be a pipe dream under her - at least Nessel is getting the job done by looking into throwing Snyder in prison where he belongs.

While Whitmer is hellbent on fixing the damn roads, Nessel is going to fix the fucking abortion that Snyder threw us into.

Another day, another shooting.

This time, it's Virginia Beach, Virginia, where a former city employee gunned down 12 people. Eleven of them were fellow co-workers.

Right before he opened fire on his former co-workers, the perpetrator put in his resignation. Nobody really knows his motive quite yet, but it is known that he was an engineer for the city of Virginia Beach.

The shooting in Virginia Beach was the biggest shooting so far this year. But still, 12 people is 12 people too many.

Virginia Beach isn't too far from Washington DC. Maybe that's why Drumpf unfortunately showed up to a memorial to the victims last weekend before he went out to England to make an ass of himself. I know, you conservatives will cry that at least be banned bump stocks. But that's not enough. We need to stop selling guns to people who don't need them.

But as long as the NRA and other Second Amendment-friendly organizations keep buying our politicians, this is what we get. Recently in Japan, there was a guy who stabbed a whole bunch of people. But thankfully, many of his victims will survive.

It's been 20 years since Columbine, and we really haven't done JACK SHIT to stop all those shootings. Since then, words like "Sandy Hook" and "Parkland" have all been introduced to our vocabulary for all the wrong reasons. And what angers me is when people call shooting victims of these massacres words like "libtards". All because they were thisclose to being shot to death.

Funny thing is that this shooting's in Virginia Beach, the home of Pat Robertson and The 700 Club. Maybe it's karma for him in regard to him praying for hurricanes for Florida because of Gay Day at Disneyworld.
