7.18.11 Bee-otch of the Day: Randy Michaels

Name: Benjamin "Randy Michaels" Homel
Age: ??
Occupation: radio station owner/CEO
Last Seen: possibly Ohio
Bee-otched For: making rock music disappear

---Great. Once again, New York is without a radio station playing new rock.

Even more, Chicago's rock choices have been now shortened to two butt rock stations and a AAA station for the Starbucks drinker.

On Friday, a new company called Merlin Media took control of  three rock radio stations owned by Emmis Communications in Chicago and New York. The affected stations are Classic Rocker WLUP (97.9 The Loop), Alternative WKQX (Q101) in Chicago and adult-leaning Alternative WRXP 101.9. Emmis retains two Urban stations in New York - Rhythmic CHR WQHT (Hot 97) and Urban AC WRKS (98.7 Kiss FM) - even though they will own a minority stake in the new company.

WLUP is safe, but Q101 and RXP are toast. Both stations' jocks have been let go and both stations are in stunt mode. Q101 is still playing music for the time being while WRXP is playing AC with the liner "101.9 FM New". It's speculated that both stations will flip to a News format rivaling WCBS in New York and WBBM Chicago, both CBS O&Os. Already, CBS announced that they will abandon the AC format on WCFS (Fresh 105.9) in Chicago

The man behind the changes is none other than former Clear Channel head honcho Randy Michaels, who is the new CEO of this big media venture. Michaels will only own 1% of the new company with equity firms and Emmis owning the rest. Michaels made media headlines recently as the CEO of Tribune, where he was told to leave due to corruption within the company. Many Tribune employees complained of the negative atmosphere within the company with reports of bad management decisions, weird memos being passed along and the fact that he had Kevin "Pig Virus" Methany run WGN 720. There was even a massive poker party held in the Tribune Tower, which angered many.

Michaels - real name Benjamin Homel - also owns Radioactive, LLC, which owns a few radio stations in small towns in Michigan's upper peninsula, such as CHR WUPZ (94.9 The Bay) in Marquette.

With the recent moves, New York is once again stuck with only one rock station: Clear Channel Classic Rocker WAXQ (Q104.3). Poor management decisions from CBS already left the Big Apple without 92.3 WXRK (K-Rock) and 102.7 WNEW. WRXP came onto the scene in 2008 and it was gaining audience. In the June 2011 Arbitron book, it had a 2.6, good for 19th place.

Q101, on the other hand was around for 19 years. It started in 1992 with the song "Friday, I'm in Love" by The Cure and ended with that song Friday night when all of their jocks exited. It was tied in 21st place with WCFS, but its cume was higher than News/Talk WLS 890 or Spanish WOJO.

Chicago's sole rockers are now The Loop, Hubbard's WDRV (97.1 The Drive) - both Classic Rock - and CBS AAA outlet WXRT 93.1. True, WXRT does play a lot of indie acts (and yes, indie's quite popular), both expect them to spin anything from Metallica, Disturbed or Five Finger Death Punch anytime soon.

True, WRXP and Q101 were both mid-packers, at least they kept the rock alive. The tragedy here is that this is a crappy time for rock because hard rock fans aren't into indie and vice versa. Not to mention, alternative fans tend to stay away from regular terrestrial radio and the ratings prove it. Case in point: my Alexa.com internet ratings chart for Detroit. While 89X is only mid-pack in the Detroit ratings, it's the #1 internet radio station amongst surfers. Also, look at the Billboard rock charts; the #1 rock album in the country's the latest from Bon Iver, and so far, radio's ignoring them.

I think the problem is simple: radio just needs a better model to keep rock fans happy. There's a reason why people love Bon Iver, so why aren't they playing them? Who's calling the shots at the radio stations: the label or the idiot programmers and consultants? Something's gotta have a good reason.

Here's something to think about: if the Supreme Court overturns the FCC's indecency rules, I would wish and hope for radio stations to start playing the full, uncensored versions of their tunes. People want rawness in their music, not toned-down shit. No wonder why rock radio's dying: it's because satellite and internet radio's better-programmed.

Or maybe it's just people love shitty music nowadays. At least New York STILL doesn't have a Country station.

7.14.11 Bee-otch of the Day: the Republican Party

DON'T FORGET TO "LIKE" BEE-OTCH OF THE DAY ON FACEBOOK!

-------------------

Name: The Republican Party
Age: 157
Occupation: right-winged idiots
Last Seen: Washington, DC
Bee-otched For: trying to screw the working poor to get ahead
---

Pretty soon, this very country we're in could be in the hands of China.

And if it does, it's because we fucked ourselves over.

In three weeks, our nation's debt will hit the ceiling, and we don't have the money that we owe. Now, President Obama is working with House Republicans for a compromise that could save this country from severe bankruptcy.

Of course, the House has to have it their way: keep taxes low for the wealthy and cut spending for Medicare and Social Security, causing both to raise their entrance age to 67 from 65. But yes, Obama and the Democrats want the wealthy to pay more. As a matter of fact, if he can raise taxes for the hedge fund managers, our budget would gain $4 billion.

But, since the House has had the most Republicans in decades, Obama might end up having to kiss their ass once again like he did when he was forced to extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. If Obama bows to the Republicans, he'll alienate his most-liberal fans like Al Gore did when he chose Joe Lieberman to be his running mate in 2000. One reason why Bush (kinda) won the 2000 election was because many of Gore's alienated went independent while the conservatives stayed true to Bush.

And yes, we know the rest of the story: Bush squandered the surplus Clinton created and threw it back to the wealthy. The great economy that Clinton helped to create was destroyed thanks to low taxes for the wealthy and less distribution, causing the utter economic collapse of 2008.

And oh yes, three wars. But hey, we caught Osama!... Under Obama's watch.

The tragedy is that the Republicans want a repeat of 2000 regarding Obama. They want him to slash benefits for the working class so they can get what they want. Once again, many of the folks who supported him in 2008 would go with someone like Nader and Michele Bachmann would become the first female president, making things worse for all Americans. Maybe since she looks like a witch, she'll reincarnate Osama from the Ocean so Al Quida can fly their planes into the Empire State Building! Since they're in the same boat religiously, maybe she can convince Erik Prince to come back to Blackwater/Xe so they can dust off sand niggers together and waste taxpayer bucks on that! MUAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA!

Look, humor aside, it's time for the nation's wealthy to wake the fuck up. A decade ago, if you had $400 million, you were one of the wealthiest people in the country. Now, Forbes would pass you by in a heartbeat. Hell, if you just passed the $1 billion mark in your fortune, you're still squeaking by. It's proof that the tax cuts the Republicans have created have done nothing but create more poor folks. Our unemployment rate's still 9%, and it's higher thinking about those who no longer collect benefits or even are underemployed, like if you have two college degrees and flipping burgers for a living.

Folks, let's get our heads away from El Rushbo and Lonesome Rhodes Beck and the probably-soon-to-be-defunct Fox News Channel and get back into the basics. 50 years ago, if you were a millionaire, you paid a 90% tax rate. Now, even BILLIONAIRES barely pay taxes. Look at GE: they made $6 billion in American last year alone and not one dime went into taxes. They even moved some of their NBCUniversal shows to Connecticut - their home state - as part of a tax deal.

If our government can't pay its bills, it's because this saying will forever hold true: United We Stand, Divided We Fall.

7.13.11 Bee-otch of the Day: Michele Bachmann

DON'T FORGET TO "LIKE" BEE-OTCH OF THE DAY ON FACEBOOK!

-------------------

Name: Michele Bachmann
Age: 55
Occupation: Minnesota congresswoman
Last Seen: Washington, DC
Bee-otched For: saying no to gays and porn
---

According to her Wikipedia article, Michele Bachmann was born into a Democratic family and raised to be one. However, she read Gore Vidal's book Burr in college and wasn't happy about how he was mocking our country's Founding Fathers. So, she stood up and said, "You know what? I don't think I'm a Democrat, I must be a Republican".

But, with the weird-ass policies she's standing up for, you know what? I'm not a Republican, I'm definitely a Democrat.

Last week, Bachmann proved how far right she is by signing a pledge that would support a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between a man and a woman. But, the amendment also would ban pornography of all kinds.

The vow was made by a far-right-winged organization from Iowa called Family Leader, which claims that marriage in America is deteriorating due to the lack of morals this country has. They even claim that homosexuality is a choice and not genetic.

Now, wait a minute, porn banned in America? Wow. How anti-First Amendment of her. She claims that the pledge would "protect women and children from porn", it's still free speech, like it or not. Plus, good luck trying to find other politicians to sign the bill since they're already cheating on their wives.

Surprise! Enter Larry Flynt.

The legendary Hustler publisher has written an article for The Daily Beast (now a part of Newsweek Magazine) blasting Bachmann for caring more about taking our freedoms away than to preserve them. He says that she's more worried about what goes on in peoples' bedrooms instead of the real issues pressing society today. You guessed it: I agree with him 100%.

For decades, the religious right have been trying to take porn away not from the hands of children, but adults too. It explains why since the 1980's, they've targeted supermarkets and convenience stores like 7-Eleven to stop selling even not-so-explicit mags like Playboy. Thankfully, there still are a ton of stores that sell porno mags - mainly ones run by Arabs and Indians - but there's also the 'ol internet which has it for free.

It's also a reason why I do stand for gay rights. The wingnuts' main reason for gay-bashing is the verse in The Bible that states that God created man and women to be fruitful and multiply. OK, so I'm 30 and single with no kids. I like my single life although yes, I'd like to marry someday. However, maybe God himself hasn't found her yet, and never will. Does this mean that I'm going to Hell for not having kids? Maybe it's also worth noting that most women don't think much about me, period. I go to a bar and I'm ignored. Maybe that's God's plan: I should enjoy the single life and not have a woman fuck it all up.

And one of those women being Michele Bachmann.

7.12.11 Bee-otch of the Day: Rupert Murdoch

DON'T FORGET TO "LIKE" BEE-OTCH OF THE DAY ON FACEBOOK!

Name: Rupert Murdoch
Age: 80
Occupation: Chairman/CEO of New Corporation, worth almost $8 billion
Last Seen: picking up the pieces
Bee-otched For: causing his media empire to crumble
---

At least he should be happy that it wasn't the Fox News Channel that killed his company - no wait, it's helping.

The great and almighty Keith Rupert Murdoch is busy trying to save his $33 billion media empire. Last week, it was revealed that throughout the 2000's, his News of the World newspaper in England's reporters were using illegal methods of news gathering, such as wiretapping. They tapped into phone conversations with victims of the 7/7 disaster and it was just announced that even victims of 9/11 were tapped as well.  Also tapped was former Prime Minister Gordon Brown whose personal conversations made it onto the pages of the NOTW .

When the scandal erupted last week, Murdoch did some damage control and shut down the paper, leaving 300 souls jobless. Its last issue hit stands last Sunday, ending 168 years of being one of Britain's top papers.

What did them in was reports that a P.I. hired by the paper was hacking the phone of murdered 13-year-old Milly Dowler, kidnapped and murdered on the way to school by a serial killer now serving life behind bars. The wiretapping interfered with police investigations and even angered her parents. The investigations grew to other various victims, even those killed in Bush's fake wars.

One reason for the shutdown is due to NewsCorp's now-troubled deal to purchase the 61% of pay TV service BSkyB that it doesn't own. Since the announcement of the scandal, the company's stock has fallen immensely - 7% yesterday alone - but, they are announcing plans to create a Sunday edition of NOTW's sister paper, The Sun .

NewsCorp also owns The Times. All three papers have/had a conservative slant (if I'm ever in England, I might as well read The Guardian or The Independent ).

One sad situation is the fact that one of the editors during the NOTW scandal, Rebekah Brooks still has a job as the chief executive of News International, which handles Uncle Rupert's newspaper holdings in England. Yet, somebody just doing their job was shown the door.

You know, there's a reason why Rupert Murdoch is worth $8 billion. He makes a product of sensationalism garnered towards those whose IQ is at room temperature. If my private conversations were made public, I'd be pissed to the point where I would sue that person who spied on me.

I think for the time being, I'll boycott as much of Fox as possible. I don't want to support anybody who doesn't believe in privacy. It's sick that anybody would go far enough to make a buck off of tragedy by tapping into private conversations. I think Rupert needs to sell off his company and hide under a rock for the rest of his life.

Thank God for Keith Olbermann and Current.

7.11.11 Bee-otch of the Day: the city of Grand Rapids

DON'T FORGET TO "LIKE" BEE-OTCH OF THE DAY ON FACEBOOK!

-------------------

Name: Grand Rapids
Age: 185
Occupation: 2nd largest city in Michigan
Last Seen: 150 miles west of Detroit
Bee-otched For: not having its priorities in order

---

This was a sad weekend for the city of Grand Rapids.

On Friday, the city and the rest of the world mourned the loss of former First Lady Betty Ford. During her 93 years on this earth, Ford proved that she should have been president and not her husband. She stood for womens' rights and most importantly helped countless amounts of people fight their drug addictions through her Betty Ford Clinic. She used her personal - yet unfortunate - experiences to help others and make them stronger. I was considering going downtown to sign her condolence book, but decided that there were more-worthy people than me who should have signed it instead.

But the day before Ford's death, the city was on edge over a distraught man with a sad and violent past.

A black man who was just let out of prison, 34-year-old Rodrick Shonte Dantzler used a stolen gun to kill seven people including his own 12-year-old daughter and her mother. He also targeted ex-girlfriends and killed them and their family members. He led police on a wild chase through the city of Grand Rapids, shooting at pedestrians and vehicles and even leading them onto I-96 and US-131 where he even crossed the median and drove onto oncoming traffic. Thankfully, no accidents happened, but Dantzler held three more people hostage. In the end, Dantzler had to give up. A self-inflicted gunshot wound took his life. It was the most-violent day in Grand Rapids history.

Dantzler was bi-polar and was committing crimes at 15. He's been in jail multiple times for breaking and entering and domestic violence. He had been under police supervision since 2005 after he was released for assault. Even his mother had a restraining order against him after he attempted to burn down her house at age 18.

With a recent rash of shootings, Grand Rapids is surely giving Detroit a run for its money in terms of crime and corruption. But guess who's the real loser in all this: Judy Rose.

Remember Judy? She's the 71-year-old president of the Black Hills Citizens for a Better Community group who created a way she thought would eliminate crime in the city five years ago: ban full-nude dancing at all the city's strip clubs. Through an "anonymous" donor, she raised thousands of dollars to challenge the city's former laws and won. The clubs threatened to sue her and the city, but thanks to activist Republican judges such as Robert Holmes Bell (yet another reason why I personally boycott Mars Hill Church), she got her way. Even city mayor George Heartwell was against the ordinance, claiming that there's no link between crime and strip clubs.

The law went into effect midnight August 26, 2006. Since then, the strip club owners have battled to fight the law to no avail. It's also worth noting that because of the laws affecting both Grand Rapids and as of New Years Day 2011 Kalamazoo, the only full-niude club left in west Michigan is Muskegon's Odyssey.

It's well-rumored who the "anonymous" donor was to Rose: Dick and Betsy DeVos. Why? For starters, when Dick ran for governor in 2006, she appeared in one of his political ads. It's also a well-known fact that Betsy's parents, Edgar and Elza Prince were huge supporters of far right-winged causes like Focus on the Family and the American Decency Association. Also, Betsy's brother is the troubled founder of Blackwater/Xe Erik Prince.

Once again, Trent Reznor is a genius for stating "bow down before the one you serve, you're gonna get what you deserve".

For bowing to the DeVoses and Judy Rose, the city of Grand Rapids is getting what it deserves for caring only about peanuts while elephants walk by. Unemployment has risen tremendously and so has crime. While the city talks about demolishing the old GM plant, the DeVoses were busy funding the retarded LipDub video which didn't create jobs and only showed people the "good side" of Grand Rapids, complete with Amway staffers, city officials and yes, Bill Steffen.

The tragic irony of the Rodrick Dantzler incident is that he fired shots very close to one of my follower's house. His wife even had to chase four kids into their house who were playing outside. He told me that he doesn't care how much he'll be losing on his home, but he's moving.

Folks, there's a reason why Newsweek just rated Grand Rapids as the 10th dying city in America. At my workplace, we have a 60-year-old woman doing the job of two 20-year-old men and she hates it. She works there because she lost her job of 40 years and is being forced to start over. The overall mood of my workplace is sad, and so is the rest of the city. I hear the same 'ol, same 'ol, and I'm echoing it myself: I want to move. Hell, I was talking to my father - who lives in Kentucky - and he told me that Ford is adding on 1,800 new jobs at a facility in Louisville that will make their Escape SUV. So why haven't we heard much in the way of job creation here in Grand Rapids?

Point is once again, bow down before the one you serve, you're gonna get what you deserve. This area is loaded with idiot Republicans who make up lies about black people, stating that the Democrats want to give our tax dollars to crack whores in Detroit. In reality, the Republicans are screwing over the economy by giving the rich money made by hard-working Americans so it stays in their accounts while the rest of us get screwed.

End result: high unemployment, high crime and seven innocent souls lost by a man who was failed by the system.

Look, Grand Rapids, shit or get off the pot. You need to create good, high-paying jobs or else I'm outta here. Right now, most of the people like myself are stuck on one rung of the ladder or get pushed down and hate it. It's time for a change. It's time to listen to the people, not Amway. No wonder why you're dying, because in the end, it's all about the Benjamins.

Don't make me say, "don't let the door hit you on the ass."

*Despite a new arrival in 94.3 The Bone, 89X is still the top internet radio site in Detroit. Riff and Channel 9-5-5 maintained, although there's some wild and wacky moves in the ratings.

*The Bone and The Oasis were the newcomers this time around, and both stations didn't do *too* bad considering their weak signals. Heck, both station have bigger Alexa rankings than most of the stations in northern Michigan. However, I do wonder what impact having new (and all female) jocks will have on The Bone. Only Christmas will tell...

*All talk stations lost ground, but the gap between ultra-conservative WDTK and ultra-liberal WDTW is narrowing.

*I guess no country fans in Detroit have computers, and neither does Amp's listeners.

*Looks like WNIC flipping to Hot AC wasn't a good idea, and neither is having a logo that looks like a woman's toilet during her period.

*Bear in mind that this list was compiled long after the holidays. Faintly, Star 105.7 and The River traded places.

*It amazes me that Arbitron says that unranked WMAX ESPN 96.1 has better ratings than WBBL, but Alexa says otherwise regarding their websites. Maybe people would rather look at "Huge" Bill Simonson than to hear him.

*101.3 The Fox rebounded, but they're still GRD's bitch.

*WOOD is still doing well with its FM/AM simulcast, but sister WTKG tumbled a bit. Sadlym I doubt if Brian Kilmeade will be that station's savior.

*Speaking of saviors, where's WFUR? Then again, judging by their website, no wonder why nobody listens to that station. They're lucky that WCSG wasn't on the list since it's a non-comm (they would be 10th place if they were playing commercials).

Tomorrow, we'll look at Detroit.
