Bee-otched For: thinking that Bob and Tom are funny
Before she died, Gilda Radner made several audio recordings, talking about her struggle with ovarian cancer. In one of the tapes, she explained that her sex drive had totally disappeared.
Sounds to me like the Viagra-popping guys who listen to Bob and Tom.
Several weeks ago, several signs like the one above started appearing all over Grand Rapids, leaving many wondering what it represented. It would be discovered that it represents LaughFest, a 10-day comedy festival that will be held in March here in Grand Rapids. The proceeds from the event will sponsor Gilda's Club Grand Rapids, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
The festival will feature well-known comic talent including Kathleen Madigan, Mike Birbiglia, Margaret Cho and the only fellow SNL-er known to be coming to the event, Alan Zweibel. Headlining LaughFest is none other than Bill Cosby and Betty White.
Also coming to LaughFest is a little something called the "Bob and Tom Comedy All-Stars". Yep! Several favorites from the long-running Stern clone radio show are coming to the event, which will be held at - of all places - Fountain Street Church. B&T sidekicks Kristi Lee and Chick McGee will host the event, but Bob Kevoian and Tom Griswold themselves will be absent.
OK, so what possessed the organizers of the event to get ANYTHING B&T-related to perform? For one thing, when they were on 101.3 The Fox, their ratings were anemic. Even their parent company, Clear Channel, dumped them from the station because it wasn't making money locally. For some reason, Townsquare had some faith in them and put the show on 98.7 WFGR, and even that station needs some help with a 2.7 in the ratings.
I know. Gilda's Club is a wonderful charity and God bless her brother for creating it to help others during their time of need. But geez. Bob and Tom have proven to be nothing but soul-less Howard Stern wannabes with their radio show, plus the fact that their TV show on WGN America was canceled recently.
Something worth thinking about is the fact that Grand Rapids is stealing ideas from Traverse City and Michael Moore. Moore's film festival in TC does well every year, so now there's several other film fests in west Michigan that are not as good. Same with the comedy festival; Moore started one earlier this year and it did well. So, GR had to come up with one of their own.
Oh, and the "Major Gifts Director" of Gilda's Club GR is a DeVos. Things that make you go "hmmmm"....
Thanks, but I think there's better ways to cure cancer than to listen to comedians Bob and Tom fake laugh to.
