December 8th, 1980 was just like any normal day for millions of people around the world. That was until Monday Night Football aired.
During that night's game between the Patriots and Dolphins, ABC president Roone Arledge passed down a news bulletin to Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford. Howard read it, and the world was stunned.
John Lennon was dead.
The almost-undisputed leader of The Beatles was smack dab in the middle of a big comeback. He retired from music in 1975 when his son Sean was born. His career was the least of his priorities at this point, and being a father was the biggest. John became a house husband while wife Yoko Ono took care of the family business.
Of course, Lennon had a change of heart and in 1980, he and Yoko recorded Double Fantasy. The album spawned several hit singles, including its leadoff "(Just Like) Starting Over", which was in the top 10 at the time. The album was a huge success.
On that day, Lennon and Yoko were quite busy. They appeared together on what would be one of the last photos ever taken of them together, which made the cover of Rolling Stone. They did an interview for a San Francisco DJ and they went into the recording studio to mix Ono's song "Walking on Thin Ice".
Just after 11 p.m. that night, Lennon and Ono went to their apartment in New York, the Dakota when a man whom Lennon signed his copy of Double Fantasy for, Mark David Chapman, shot him in the back four times. Lennon was rushed to the hospital in a squad car, dead on arrival.
In June 1981, Chapman pleaded guilty for Lennon's murder; since he was schizophrenic, his lawyers advised him to plead insanity instead. He was served life in prison.
Today, Chapman has outlived the man he killed by 15 years. He's still in Attica, living in a cell, but also works as a kitchen helper and legal clerk outside the cell. He's been up for parole six times, all ending in rejection.
Ya know folks, good. I'm glad that Chapman's rotting away in jail while Lennon's as popular as ever. I was living in my mother's womb when Lennon died, and ya know what, I'm proud of the heritage John left us and for those born generations after. Sadly, however, many - like myself - wonder what life would be like if he was still alive. I think this country would still be a wonderful place because Lennon was a man of peace and love. Chapman, OTOH, bitched and moaned that Lennon was a hypocrite because his signature tune "Imagine" talked about giving up possessions and to live like everybody else, yet he lived wealthy. True, but he showed the world that he was a wonderful father to Sean and gave up fame for him. Chapman wasn't doing the world a favor; he was just a lunatic from Hawaii who wanted people to kiss his ass just because he had a rough childhood.
I know that Chapman probably can't read this, but I hope he rots in hell for all eternity. I know that he's a Christian and the Bible preaches forgiveness, but how can you forgive a loser for taking away a man which true, natural talent? Why did God allow Lennon to die and Chapman gets to live?
I don't know. But in the meantime, we can only Imagine .
