The good news: after an absence of over a decade, a former Detroit radio station is making a big comeback.
The bad news: it's not Planet 96.3, K-Rock, Z-Rock , Extreme Radio or The Edge @ 105dotone.
It's Talk 1270 WXYT.
In 2000, CBS decided to flip 1270 from talk radio to all sports, mainly due to the fact that the station was Detroit's home for the Red Wings, Tigers and Lions. It was rumored that it was an agreement with the Ilitch family, who own the Wings and Tigers; it was also the reason why 1270 boosted its power to 50,000 watts, even though it's severely directional and very weak in many parts of the Motor City.
When it was talk the first time around, WXYT carried Rush Limbaugh, Don Imus and Larry King, alongside local hosts David Newman and the late Mark Scott. IIRC, their ratings weren't the greatest, but then again, neither was their signal.
When Rush moved to WJR, rumor had it that they sent WXYT flowers and condolences.
However, on October 1st, 2007, 1270 became useless when it started simulcasting with 97.1, which dropped its Stern clone talk format and became 97.1 The Ticket. In the four years since, 1270 has been nothing more than a placeholder, even though WXYT itself became a top station in Detroit thanks to their Red Wings and Tigers coverage.
Now, 1270 is going back to talking, and it's not going to be good conversation.
On the day after the 10th anniversary of the attacks on 9/11, WXYT will return to the talk format it had from 1978 until 2000. The station's schedule will be mainly syndicated talk, but will have a local morning show hosted by lawyer Charlie Langton. Sadly, WXYT will now be OD'd with the Seig Heil stylings of Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, Todd Schnitt and two guys who used to fill in for Rush: Jason Lewis and Rusty Humphries.
Strangely enough, 1270 is at a .6 in the ratings, even though 97.1 simulcasts with them full-time. Don't expect their ratings to increase much more.
I think it's sad that conservative BS in this country has overtaken our media, causing many to not think straight and act idiotic. Lonesome Rhodes Beck in Detroit? Please. Hell, I'm shocked that his show's aired in Ann Arbor! Plus, tape-delayed Laura Ingraham on a crappy signal AM pitted against El Rushbo on WJR? What brand of crack are they smoking?
If they had a brain, they'd convince 1310 WDTW to give all their shows to them since that station's power sucks, plus the lack of promotion that station receives is laughable. But, this is CBS, the same company that gave us "Free FM", so what else is new....
Might as well give the license back to the FCC and hold a fire sale...
