Dear America, this sucks.
As most of us know by now, our perfect credit rating has slid for the first time in history. Standard and Poor's lowered it from a AAA to a AA+ on Friday, ending 94 years of perfect credit.
Ironically, the news from S&P came 30 years almost exactly to the day Congress voted to reduce taxes for the wealthy to 50%, down from 94% during WWII. Today, the highest the wealthy pay on their taxes is only 35% and some big corporations that make billions don't pay a single dime in taxes, like GE.
What bothers me is this: I know how capitalism's supposed to work, while too many Americans - especially those my age - don't, and they're the ones getting screwed. On October 3rd, 2009, I went to see Capitalism: A Love Story at the Celebration Cinema North here in Grand Rapids. I was hoping to see some of the same audience as as his previous films, especially Fahrenheit 9/11. The film wasn't even in one of the larger auditoriums, and it was only maybe 60% full of people... Old people.
So, where were the 20-somethings? A few theaters down, seeing Woody Harrelson and Jessie Eisenberg zap away zombies at an amusement park. Tragically, Zombielandwas a box office hit, making over $100 million at the box office while Capitalism only made $17 million on a $20 million budget. It was Michael Moore's biggest bomb sinceCanadian Bacon.
Sadly, what people don't realize is that much of what Michael Moore says is pure truth. The only people who'll try to chastise him are the Limbaughs, Becks and Hannitys of the world, and just about anybody who doesn't live from paycheck to paycheck. If anybody saw Capitalism, they'd know that we actually had a middle class back when Mike was a kid. But it was Reagan and especially Bush II who screwed it up for everybody.
Look at Obama's first two years. He saved GM, the auto companies are back to making fuel efficient cars, he overhauled healthcare reform and he caught Osama (and yes, my condolences to the members of Seal Team Six that were killed this past weekend). However, since it seems that most Americans don't give a damn about what happened to our families during the Great Depression, we were all thinking that Obama was going to wave his magic wand and poof, country's fixed. Sadly, that's not how it works.
What this country needs isn't just a Democrat in the White House. We need Democrats leading the Senate AND the House! Sadly, we've allowed the right-winged media and their ass-kissing of the Tea Party to tell us that higher taxes aren't the answer, and that each man is for himself. In their mind, all high taxes will do is feed crackheads in Detroit. In reality, it creates high-paying jobs and preserves the middle class. Now, thanks to the House and John Boner, that dream's dead, and Obama has turned into Stepin Fetchit, Jr.
You see, I love America, and it's too bad that most Americans - especially those in the 18-34 bracket - would rather play video games and watch Jersey Shore than to worry about their future. The Republicans will use this current budget situation to nip at Social Security and Medicare as much as possible, so we'll be working until we're dead.
If you've voted Republican last election, please do yourself a favor: if you have at least a small heart, please watch Capitalism: A Love Story. You need to learn why our middle class is important and that giving the wealthy won't help anything. We must remove the wool from our eyes and see the big picture. We don't need another 2008.
But thanks to the Tea Party, we're getting closer to another one.
