My long-time readers should know by now that if Rick Snyder died tomorrow, I would be dancing on the streets naked.
But sadly, it's turning personal.
Last week, 171 caregivers at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans were shown the door as part of Gov. Rick Snyder(R)'s plan to privatize state workers and bust unions. The aides were being paid $15 to $20 per hour to feed and clothe the residents, who all had military experience and have health issues. They also received pensions and health insurance. The new helpers will get $15 per hour, but they won't get it all since technically, they're only temporary workers and a chunk of their paycheck will go to their agency. They won't get state benefits, either.
Many are infuriated with Snyder's plan to privatize the Vet's Home, especially the vets themselves. Don Slocum, a resident of the home told the Grand Rapids Press that he knows his aides and they know him and everybody else there. The union leaders who represent the home also told the paper that the state misses the point when it comes to saving money and taking care of our nation's heroes.
IMHO, when any business replaces a good paid worker with a scab to save money, that business will suffer. Trust me, I've seen it happen *COUGHKLQCOUGH*. Our nation's vets need the best care possible, and when some underpaid schmuck takes care of them, all hell's going to break loose.
So, why is the ax-falling at the Vet's Home personal to me? Simple: my aunt works there as a coordinator. Last week, she posted on her Facebook "three more hours..." and her responses were all about Snyder being a coward. I thought she was getting canned, but it was her helpers and not her. The last thing my family needs is another member losing his or her job right now.
I hope that Snyder and his goons are happy. Plus, I hope that the people who voted him in are enjoying their crow. During the last two years of previous Governor Jennifer Granholm's tenure, this state starting seeing amazing results. GM was bailed out, hit movies were being shot in small towns, creating jobs for people there and new factories were being built. Now, we have the doofus who turned Gateway from a computer giant into a penny stock running this state into doing the same as Gateway. As long as Snyder's busting unions and creating jobs for people who will put poison in an old vet's medicine bottle, you can kiss this state goodbye.
