We are living in uncertain times.
We have a de facto president spewing hate in my hometown.
We have an education secretary - also from my area - who wants to cut funding for the Special Olympics.
And now, one of the sole voices of reason in Northern Michigan radio is hanging up his mic. But thankfully, not for good.
Nate "Smitty" Smith, the longtime afternoon host at Rock 105 and 95.5 in Northern Michigan announced on Monday that tomorrow's show will be his last. The military vet and Rapid City native had hosted afternoons on the various incarnations of the Cheboygan-based 105.1 - originally Classic Rock The Bear - since 2007. He also hosted a metal show on Rock 105 and 95.5 called The Asylum for many years as well.
Smitty was there through many changes, such as the transformation of 105.1 and the station formerly known as The Zone at 95.5 to what was then called Real Rock 105 and 95.5 in 2009. Of course there were some depressing moments, such as the 2014 flipping of 95.5 to a (thankfully) short-lived easy listening format and yes, his firing in 2017 that also thankfully didn't last long.
So, where's Smitty going? To the bar. When he was originally canned from Rock 105/95.5, he started moonlighting at Right Brain Brewery in Traverse City. He continued working part-time when he was rehired. On Monday, Smitty announced that Right Brain wanted him on full-time, complete with a huge raise that he simply couldn't refuse.
The good news is that Rock 105/95-5 will be adding two new jocks on Monday. Smitty's replacement for afternoons is Dave Doran, former WRIF/Detroit jock. As for the long-vacated midday slot, another long-time Detroit jock, Roxanne Steele will take over the 10a-3p shift. The last midday jock Rock 105/95.5 had, Trudi Daniels is now at 106.7 Wheels in Detroit. It wouldn't surprise me if both Doran and Steele will be voicetracked. But then again, better to have voicetracked Detroit jocks in northern Michigan over the no-talent ho and the asshole who got Smitty canned in the first place on that flaming pile of overrated horseshit KLT.
I'll admit, I live in Grand Rapids and love Rock 105/95.5 a helluva lot more than WGRD. They don't play a ton of burned-out classic rock and Smitty has a better voice than GRD's current afternoon guy. Hell, I just checked Rock 105/95.5's last ten songs played, and the oldest song in that set was Pearl Jam's "Evenflow". I checked their webstream often since I'm proud that my birthplace FINALLY has a kick-ass rocker that I can sit through for more than 10 minutes. Growing up, it was either country, CHR, oldies and yes, overplayed classic rock.
I loved Smitty's games, commentary and yes, "Hello Facebooks!" Thad Ranger. I even thought that he had a better Super Bowl Halftime show than Maroon 5 recently when he attempted to burn his brother's crappy dresser.
The good news is that Smitty plans to come back on occasion, doing his yearly "Metallica-a-thon" and other surprises. So, this isn't a total goodbye.
But otherwise, radio is losing some real talent.
