It's a sad, pathetic shame that Hollywood has to make its fair share of shitty superhero movies.
Most of them seem to have the same plot: lots of explosions and sound effects to make the viewer feel like they're in a cinematic rollercoaster ride. But at the end of the day, it's the same shit, different picture.
But then, there's "Joker".
I saw the Joaquin Phoenix flick last weekend and it was the antithesis to most superhero flicks I've seen in recent years. The movie was very psychological, giving us a deep look as to why a struggling comedian named Arthur Fleck turned into an evil clown.
In the movie, Fleck is living with his mentally-disabled mother, whom he finds out adopted him and forced him in front of abusive boyfriend after abusive boyfriend. He's on seven different medications for his mental issues, but ends up off those meds because of a cut in government funding. He's attacked while busking in front of a store going out of business, and his boss reprimands him because his attackers stole and destroyed his sign. He even tries a career in stand-up comedy only to be humiliated by his idol, a popular late-night talk show host played by Robert DeNiro.
In one pivotal scene in the movie, Fleck - dressed in clown garb - is humiliated and attacked by a group of preppy young men who beat him up. In self defense, Fleck grabs a gun and shoots and kills the three. And oddly enough, many in Gotham City end up looking at him as a hero for doing so.
Of course, "Joker" is not without its controversy. The last Joker, Jared Leto reportedly didn't want the film to be made because he was the last Joker and wanted Phoenix's role. But most-importantly, there were those who felt that the film's disturbing subject matter was too well-gripped from the headlines.
The sad truth is that the reason why people buy guns and shoot others is simply because they were bullied too far. These people wanted a seat at the table and were refused. Regretfully, I know how they felt. But, because I chose not to own a gun, I do the right thing and walk away. True, there's other movies that dealt with the same problems Arthur Fleck had. Rob Zombie's "Halloween" looked at Michael Myers as a kid, constantly being bullied because his mother was a stripper and his own family seemed to pretend that he didn't exist.
And the interesting thing is that both Fleck and Myers had one thing in common: both had no real fathers.
One reason why I saw "Joker" was because of the good reviews, especially from Michael Moore. He claimed that the bad guys in the film represent those who voted in Reagan, the Bushes and Drumpf. After all, Reagan closed the mental hospitals and at the end of the day, the homeless on the street skyrocketed. Union busting was why there was trash everywhere; there were no trash collectors to pick it up.
True, Warner Bros. is owned by AT&T, who want to capitalize on DC Comics like Disney has had with Marvel. The only difference is that since Warners tends to be less family-friendly, it gives them more leverage in making The Joker as evil as he can be. And guess what? The grown-ups love it. Of all the movies in the top 10 box office, "Joker" has been the highest-grossing film with a worldwide total of $738 million out of a modest $55 million budget. Not all superhero movies need to be dorky PG-13 pieces of shit.
In the end, Warner Bros. needs to be commended for this movie. It's got a great plot and it gives me hope that other movies from the DC - and even Marvel - universes can be made for us grown-ups.
Hey! Maybe Margot Robbie will get ass-nekkid again in the next Harley Quinn movie "Birds of Prey" in early 2020! One can only dream......
