Sometimes, rock music's biggest fans shouldn't be fans at all.
To me, rock music is a fine wine. It doesn't hurt to know its history. Hell, I'm probably one of the few on this earth that know that "Rock Around the Clock" wasn't the first rock song ever recorded. Aw, hell no! There was Fats Domino, Big Mama Thornton's version of "Hound Dog" from 1952, B.B. King and so much more.
For years, people called the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame a joke. Too many influential bands are STILL not in the HOF, but some that critics would label as lesser bands are. This year might be no exception.
Sixteen bands are all in the running for the HOF, including Motorhead, Dave Matthews Band, Nine Inch Nails and Judas Priest. The HOF is even allowing people to vote for their favorite HOF nominees. Sadly, some people should NOT vote in something as prestigious.
Among the sixteen bands nominated, as of right now, the #1 act is Pat Benatar with nearly 200,000 votes. Granted, Pat has a ton of hit songs and was one of MTV's first big stars. Plus, she was an influence for a plethora of future female rock stars.
But what irritates me is who's currently last place: a band that SHOULD have been in the HOF maybe 20 years ago at least: MC5. To many, it was the band - whose name was short for "Motor City 5" - INVENTED punk rock. Not only that, they were known for their leftist agenda, protesting the Vietnam War and supporting African Americans. They even staged a protest against Hudson's Department Store, which banned their album "Kick Out The Jams" because of the title song's beginning line of "Kick Out The Jams, motherfuckers!"
You can say that MC5 was the Rage Against the Machine of their day, and even that band's day in the HOF has yet to come.
Right now, MC5 only has 36,000 votes. So, they helped lay the foundation for punk rock and this is the respect they get. Nice!
I understand. MC5's only major song was "Kick Out The Jams", and it's not a song you hear every day on your local classic rock station. Benatar, OTOH, can be heard several times daily. Well played, corporate media, well played.
The sad truth about so-called music fans is that they have no respect for innovators. When Post Malone released a song with Ozzy Osbourne not long ago, the response from many a youngster was "who's Ozzy Osbourne?" As somebody who owns a worn-out copy of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" album, it was my head slamming into the palm of my hand. Same with people calling Tool a "grandpa band" because they kicked Taylor Swift's ass from the #1 spot on the album charts recently.
Twenty-five years from now, if the HOF does something similar with, let's say, Chris Brown vs. Greta Van Fleet and Chris wins, it will be a demerit on all humanity. It's sad when real innovators get fucked while the overrated and overplayed win. Now, in the case between Pat Benatar vs. MC5, I'm not trying to knock Ms. Benatar. Personally, she's a very talented musician who still tours regularly. However, it's a shame that radio burned "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" to a pulp. Where's "We Belong" and "Invincible" when you need it?
Sometimes in the world of rock, the love for it is a battlefield.
