Let's face it: terrestrial radio is beyond worthless.
With the internet and Sirius/XM, why bother with shitty, overplayed music and commercials? Well, it's also having an effect on the pocketbooks of local radio stations here in Grand Rapids.
According to a post on the ever-so-beloved Michigan Radio and TV Buzzboard, the top five radio stations in Grand Rapids in terms of revenue didn't make all that much. B93 made $4.1 million, WOOD-FM/AM made $3.6 million (bear in mind that the station's mostly syndicated talk) while GRD and LAV raked in $3 million a piece.
But, guess what? WBBL didn't even make a million.
Yep! The home of good 'ol "Huge" Bill Simonson only billed $925,000, although according to the post's author, ESPN 96.1 billed even lower. True, Huge has friends such as the Devoses, the Loeks and the people who own the overpriced hair salon Lady Jane's, but sadly, it's proof that being an egomaniac asshole won't bring you much happiness.
The sad thing is that ALL radio is losing money. Hell, I remembered when radio stations up made that money, but not now. Part of the problem is the fact that radio simply doesn't care anymore. Hell, I'm still wondering why GRD started to lay on more classic rock instead of intensifying it. Oh, yeah! It's because of the assholes at Townsquare Media who can't program a radio station properly or keep popular personalities to save their asses. Good thing the company's up for sale.
Look, Cumulus Media closed at 39 cents a share today. Oh, did I mention that apparently, 105.3 Hot FM's billing is the WORST in Grand Rapids apparently? Maybe playing shitty vanilla pop music is not a bright idea.
Oh, well, Like Rome, they're burning and we're Nero playing the fiddle.
