Recently, we FINALLY got a hold of a recent Nielsen ratings book for the Traverse City/Cadillac/Petoskey radio market.
Well, most of it.
Northern Broadcast's (WKLT/The Fox/ESPN Up North) stations were exempt from the book because they don't subscribe to Nielsen. However, we've got word from a source we'll keep anonymous that KLT had some good news and bad news this past book.
The good news is that KLT is still in second place with roughly an eight share. The bad news? They lost about 1/2 their audience from last book, mostly due to the dismissal of the popular Omelette and Friends show. Then again, most radio stations up north lost some shares in part due to the internet and SiriusXM.
What might be a total embarrassment to northern Michigan radio is the fact that Rock 105/95-5 REALLY shot themselves in the foot by firing afternoon host Smitty. According to my source, he was #1 in his time slot among 18-34 year olds. And yet, he was shown the door reportedly over false bullshit made by KLT to piss off Rock 105/95-5's sponsors.
OK, let me explain again why Smitty was allegedly fired. For some time, Smitty had a beef with KLT for ripping his show off. He had a co-host, Ryan McTeague for several years. Well, KLT decided to do a duo-based afternoon show, The Afternoon Trainwreck, which eventually became the morning show. Smitty also hosted a local music show, The Asylum and KLT decided to do the same with their local music show, KLT's Garage.
Things got worse between Smitty and KLT when afternoon jock Tom "RadioStudSTD" Devitt started ripping of a segment of his called "The Box" where he played a song seldom heard on rock radio these days. Well, Dipshit decided to rip the idea off in his segment called "The Bag". Smitty was so pissed that he decided to bash him on the air and he decided to post the segment on his Soudcloud page. However, it was placed next to an internet-only segment where he played an obscene tune called "You're a Cunt". Needless to say, KLT had some fun with Smitty's segments and edited them together to send to Rock 105/95-5's parent, Black Diamond Broadcasting's advertisers. Sadly, two of BD's clients threatened to pull their spots and Smitty was canned.
Since Smitty was shown the door, Rock 105/95-5 has hired former WRIF and WCSX Detroit jock Trudi Daniels to handle middays while the previous midday guy, Jay Roberts has taken over afternoons.
Problem is, Jay Roberts doesn't do his show from northern Michigan. He's in Wisconsin and since he used to be on 93X in Minneapolis, I highly doubt if he ever visited Traverse City. Morning man Cartman is now based in Green Bay where he handles afternoons on heritage CHR WIXX as "Fife". Daniels reportedly is still in Detroit, Black Diamond's homebase. The station's sole local jock is NASCAR Steve, who only works weekends while he handles middays on sister station The Bear.
The sad thing is that both Omelette and Smitty had ratings but they're both canned. The funny thing is that there's several stations up north with lousy ratings like Z93 and Bob FM and they're still lingering on. Why?
This is why radio sucks: if you have ratings, you don't stand a chance anymore. Look at "Huge" Bill Simonson here in Grand Rapids. No ratings, yet he's still on the air because he's a kiss-ass to his advertisers. Yet, WSNX fired most of their local jocks so they can cyberjock their Detroit jocks on there for dirt cheap.
Folks, this is why terrestrial radio is losing BIGTIME. They. Just. Don't. Fucking. Care. The only thing keeping Rock 105/95-5 afloat is the fact that they play newer and harder rock than KLT. KLT, OTOH is being kept alive by its heritage, though they lost 1/2 their listeners and some of their advertisers, too because of what they did to Omelette.
Radio, fix your mess or else you'll have hell to pay.
