The first month of 2020 isn't over yet, and too many people are dropping like flies.

Hell, we lost one celebrity, the NBA's David Stern on New Year's Day. The world of rock two weeks ago just lost Rush's drumming impresario Neil Peart.

Yesterday, the world was shocked, but maybe not shocked that the bat's head-eating Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne made the announcement that he's battling stage two Parkinson's Disease. The announcement was made on Good Morning America in an interview by Robin Roberts along with Ozzy's wife Sharon by his side. Ozzy claimed that he discovered he had the disease when he suffered a fall last year. There were rumors that he was in ill health, but the two put those rumors to rest in the interview.

Parkinson's is when the body's nervous system virtually shuts down. In Ozzy's case, he says that he has numbness in his arms and legs due to the disease. So far, it hasn't affected his ability to perform; he currently has three singles: "Under the Graveyard" - which topped the Active Rock charts for several weeks - and his duet with Sir Elton John, "Ordinary Man", which is also the title track of his new album, which is due a month from yesterday. The third, "Take What You Want", is his duet with Post Malone and Travis Scott and is on Posty's current album "Hollywood's Bleeding".

Several other notables with Parkinson's include Michael J. Fox, Linda Ronstadt (who can no longer perform due to the disease), Detroit Tiger great Kirk Gibson and fellow metal great Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest. Several deaths due to Parkinson's include Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire, Muhammad Ali and US Attorney General Janet Reno.

Thankfully for Ozzy, he plans to return to the stage this fall as he resumes his tour. Coming from a working class family, he simply doesn't want to let his fans down. He is on a regimen of medications to control his Parkinson's, which thankfully have not affected his singing.

However, it was another mental disorder that took another British great away.

Terry Jones was one of the insane minds that gave us Monty Python. He was best known for his portrayal of women and directing several of the Pythons' best-known movies, including "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and "Life of Brian". Among his most-popular roles on the program included one of the members of the Spanish Inquisition, the nude organist and the morbidly-obese Mr. Creosote in "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life", another film he directed. Outside of Python, Jones wrote dozens of books and wrote scripts to several movies, such as the David Bowie-starred and Jim Henson-directed-and Muppeted and George Lucas-produced 1986 film "Labyrinth".

Sadly, Jones battled dementia toward the end of his life. When accepting a BAFTA Award in 2016, he had the disease for one year and could barely speak. He died yesterday at the age of 77.

While Jones is gone, we thankfully still have Ozzy, and if he comes to Grand Rapids, it might be a once-in-a-lifetime deal for me. If he comes here, it might be his last show (and I just checked, he's not coming to Michigan at all this year). He's had his ups and downs over the years and he should be praised for putting his fans first.

As for Terry Jones, he was a man who made us laugh and was a brilliant genius while not in front of the camera. While he's up there, I hope he says hi to Graham Chapman and Neil Innes for us.

Even in poor health and death, Ozzy and Terry have allowed us to always look up the bright side of life.
