Dave Chappelle is truly the thinking man's comic.

On his last Netflix special "Sticks and Stones", he pointed out that celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, a man who traveled the world and ate the best food hanged himself. But, he pointed out a schoolmate of his who was one of the smartest kids at his school. One day, Chappelle saw him working at a Foot Locker in a mall, wearing their trademark referee uniform.

Chappelle's response was why did Anthony Bourdain kill himself and Mr. Foot Locker didn't?

Well, that became a template for the events that happened on Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon, I took a nap. I woke up just before 4 p.m. and went to the bathroom. I had the TV on the Spartan game and as I walked back into the living room, I damn near had a heart attack. The screen had a picture of Kobe Bryant with the caption "1978-2020". I thought, "REALLY?!?" I thought to myself, "HOW?!?" Immediately the announcers at halftime announced that Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash. Thoughts of rock greats like Bill Graham and Stevie Ray Vaughn played in my head. I also asked myself when the last time a sports great died so young and so tragically. I knew where I was when I heard the news of the deaths of Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson and too many others. But in the drug-free world of professional sports, a myriad of them live nice, long lives.

Of course, just hours later, we learned that Kobe's 13-year-old daughter, Gianna also perished in the crash along with seven others. Word now has it that the helicopter flew into heavy fog but had special clearance to fly to a basketball game Gianna was playing in. The Bryants lived north of Los Angeles and often flew a helicopter to beat the usually heavy Los Angeles traffic.

The 6'6" Bryant won five NBA Championships, several MVPs, an 18-time NBA All-Star and two gold medals. After he retired from the NBA in 2016 playing all 20 of his seasons for the Lakers, he spent more time with his family. He always felt that being a dad was a more important job that playing basketball. When he and Gianna died Sunday, they died together, getting ready to do something that father and daughter loved, and that was basketball. Gianna would always go to Laker games with her father, knowing that one day, she would have wanted to be just like him, albeit in the WNBA.

Sadly, just before my little siesta, I was on Facebook when one of my friends shared a post from a well-known cable channel. The post read, "Completely unrelated advice: Have a lawyer look over a contract before you sign it. Don't worry, we'll be back Monday." The post had a picture of an old TV with a message that they "had to step away from the channel today" and telling viewers and fans to "try not to burn the place down while we're gone".

The channel, of course is Freeform, fka ABC Family and Fox Family and The Family Channel before that. From noon until midnight Sunday, the channel was forced to show a telethon for The 700 Club. Freeform was owned by 700 Club host Pat Robertson and his Christian Broadcasting Network from its inception in 1977 until 1998 when it was sold to Rupert Murdoch and Fox to become Fox Family. After several years of sluggish ratings, Murdoch sold Fox Family to Disney in 2001 where it became ABC Family for 15 years. In 2016, the channel became Freeform, a channel aimed towards a young, more-progressive demographic.

Even though Freeform has tried to shy away the wholesomeness of its Family Channel past (they now even air Simpsons reruns), they're still obligated to air The 700 Club since Robertson has ordered all future owners of the channel to air the program no matter what. Just today, the channel once again turned to their socials and told their audience that they've changed and to stop thinking about them as the fuddy-duddy Family Channel since they now have shows that deal with LGBTQ+ rights, equal pay for both sexes and even sex. Apparently, Disney has even offered to pay Pat Robertson and CBN to get out of their forced contract $42 million. But Robertson and Co. have all said thanks, but no thanks.

So, here's a summary: Kobe Bryant, a man who was a role model in the NBA for over two decades, coached his daughter's team and was a true family man dies at 41 with his 13-year-old daughter by his side. Yet, there's Pat Robertson, who will be 90 in March and for over 60 years has misused The Bible to blast gays, women, people of color and leftists. Hell, he's a professional for exploiting the poor by preaching the prosperity gospel with using stupid vignettes on The 700 Club. Yes, I'm referring to the BS stories about people who lost their business, their home and family. But then, the father gave his last $10 to Pat Robertson and now he's wealthier than ever before.

And why is Pat Robertson not dead yet?

Folks, it's a shame that there are still morons out there who are dumb enough to give a douchebag like Pat Robertson money. After all, he's worth $200 million to a billion bucks. Nobody really knows, but he ain't broke. He even admitted years ago that his flying hospitals were also used to fly himself to his diamond mines in Africa. Yes, Pat Robertson at one time was a slave driver.

Here in Michigan, two secular TV stations air The 700 Club: Detroit's WMYD-20 and Cadillac/Traverse City's WFQX 32. WFQX only aired one hour of the 700 Club beg-a-thon on Sunday so they could air normal programming from Fox. That station has carried the show for over a decade; beforehand, it was carried on WGTU ABC 29&8, a station with a sad, long history of carrying religious shows. From the mid-70s until 1988, they even carried The PTL Club with Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. According to a 1977 TV Guide, 29&8 even pre-empted Family Feud so Jim and Tammy Faye could screw northern Michiganders out of their hard-earned cash. Only after they were caught stealing that 29&8 dropped the show in 1988... for The 700 Club.

When 29&8 aired The 700 Club and their Super Sunday beg-a-thons, they often pre-empted ABC programming that aired that day, namely NBA basketball. Hell, I remembered when they had golf that Sunday and somebody complained to the Record-Eagle about that decision. When 29&8 was sold to Barrington Broadcasting, they THANKFULLY dropped that show. But when it moved to 32, it now meant that it locally broadcast out of the same building sister CBS station WWTV 9&10 called home.

Tragically, I know the types of people who give to televangelists: white trash. I once knew a family that lived in a nasty hick town in northern Michigan who lived in a trailer and had another trailer in its backyard caved in. Sadly, I even have an uncle who gives to religious channels like TBN. He was a pill popper in high school and ended up not graduating til he was 20. He ended up living in a trailer park near Detroit and at 63, may never retire. When my aunt was dying of cancer, she was going to will her retirement to him. However, her son and his tuskan raider wife dragged her across the state to change the will so he and her now have her pension while he's stocking shelves at Meijer. My uncle works while my cousin and his nasty ho wife hardly do anything and they live in a five-bedroom home on a lake. And yet, my uncle thinks that they deserve all the glory because they're Catholic.

You see, I'm the type that would rather hang out with friendly atheists over hateful Christians. I've been to many churches in my life and I simply have come to the conclusion that people have ruined God's image. Jesus was probably the greatest man who ever walked the Earth and man started exposing him as something other than a socialist who fed the poor and healed the sick. One church I went to wanted $1.7 million on one Sunday and their youth pastor sex shamed his flock. Recently, he committed suicide after he was caught stealing $500,000 from his current church. I even attended a left-leaning church here in GR, but quit because of a myriad of reasons. One of them was that a friend to the church was the former Grand Rapids mayor who forced all the strip clubs to close. Another was that I dealt with a loser who tried to pressure me into giving him $500 to fix his car, and he doesn't work. Not to mention the fact that there was a lack of younger people, especially women.

Any real Christian knows that Jesus hung out with prostitutes. Honestly, I'd rather give money to a stripper than a preacher who uses that same money to go to that same strip club. Think about it: most strippers are college girls and a good, talented dancer can pay off her college debt quite quickly. But thanks to George Fartsmell and Rosalynn Blissless, I now have to drive to Lansing if I want a girl's ass in my face.

You see, my heart breaks for Kobe's family, the Lakers organization and to his millions of fans. I'll admit that I wasn't his biggest fan, but it's a shame that a person of immense talent and love for his craft is gone forever. And yet, Pat Robertson is still on the air spreading hate and lies. No wonder why church attendance has been going down for a long, long time.

Kobe Bryant was the GOAT. Pat Robertson is the Goat.
