All my life, I've always enjoyed the old Warner Bros. Looney Tunes where Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck argue over which season it was.
--
----"Rabbit season!"
"Duck season!"
Of course, during the argument Bugs starts proclaiming that it's wabbit season and Daffy starts saying "duck season". Tired of the bickering, Daffy says that it's duck season and that's final. A befuddled Elmer Fudd aims his gun at Daffy and shoots. The bullet hits his beak, causing it to spin around his head with buckshot impaled in it.
Angry, Daffy walks over to Bugs, pointing at him while saying, "you're despicable!". Iris out.
Yes, that type of short is rememberable and is something that the Warner Bros. animators did best. However, there's a sad reality in all this: it's neither wabbit or duck season.
It's election season.
Yes, every two minutes, we're stuck with political ads here in Michigan if we watch our local stations. There's plenty of Biden vs. Drumpf ads to watch and the same goes with our senate race here in the Mitten State. In one corner, you have Democratic junior Senator Gary Peters. In the other corner is Republican John James, who ran against senior Senator Debbie Stabenow two years ago and lost.
James was an Apache pilot in the US Army who served several tours of duty in Iraq. His father is a wealthy businessman, owning a supply chain company. He describes himself as "a pro-life, pro-second amendment, pro-business conservative" who also is calling for the defunding of Planned Parenthood. Not only that, he's against the legalization of cannabis. One of Peters' campaign ads shows James telling his followers that he wants to dismantle Obamacare.
And yet, he's black.
Now, he's running campaign ads where he's using George Floyd's murder to spread a message of peace over hate. But like I said, he's a Republican. True, it was a Republican named Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves. However, the Repukes have strayed away from Lincoln's vision. This weekend, I saw the gripping Netflix documentary "13th" about the legal loopholes this country is taking in regards to slavery. One might think that the 13th Amendment abolished slavery, but if you look closely, it reads Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. In other words, slavery is still legal if that person goes to prison. It explains why a lot of prisoners make the products you buy for dirt cheap. It's because big corporations have deals with prisons to make their shit for less than minimum wage.
And who makes up the biggest percentage of prisoners in the US? BLACK PEOPLE!
Thanks to our country not doing enough for African Americans since the days of slavery ended, they don't get a good education, good-paying jobs or a chance. George Floyd lost his job when COVID-19 hit, so he used fake money to buy cigarettes. If he was a white man, the cops would just slap on the cuffs and called it good. But sadly, he got kneeled on by a cop and died within eight minutes and forty-six seconds (and Dave Chappelle's "8:46" is a must-see).
For somebody like John James to use the tragic death of George Floyd to garner support for his election just sickens me. To me, he's just another Uncle Tom bowing to the wealthy white conservatives whom he wants to be a master to. In 2018, I went to northern Michigan and I drove through the outskirts of Cadillac coming home to Grand Rapids. I saw plenty of John James signs on peoples' lawns. I'll betcha that many of the people whom I passed moved to the Cadillac area simply because they didn't like being around people of color. They're the types who will change their purse to another shoulder when they're walking down the street and a black person passes them. But John James? Well, he's their boy!
Sadly, every time I see that fucking awful ad, I don't see a black man preaching love. John James reminds me of Al Jolson in "The Jazz Singer" in blackface singing, "Mammy! Mammy!"
Look, Gary Peters ain't perfect. Like James, he's a military vet and supports military causes. Personally, I'd rather see nurses with facemasks and other important gear than to have Drumpf fly the Blue Angels over their hospitals. At least Peters is not well-liked by the NRA, which is a plus. However, I might go Green in the 2020 election since I want to give a message to the Democratic establishment, especially after what they did to Bernie Sanders. If Peters beats James, cool. If James wins, well, at least his brain-washing of the people of Michigan worked.
Love will overcome hate. Hopefully, that means James, Drumpf and all of their cronies will be overcome as well.
