Sunlight is the best disinfectant.
But when you're in air conditioning with dozens of people, your mask is your friend, IF you have one.
With temperatures in Phoenix now in triple digits, one would have thought that COVID-19 would be dead and gone by now. Tragically, it's not. Arizona has seen a massive spike in COVID-19 cases all because as scientists know all too well, reopening anything during this pandemic too early would present a spike in cases.
And whad'ya know, they're 100% right.
Florida made history a few days ago when they broke the record for the biggest one-day spike in new COVID-19 cases of any territory or country: over 3,000 new patients. Many of those new patients are young people. It's understandable that young people want to go out and party. Well, so does the coronavirius, but it wants to destroy your soul.
Here in Michigan, we were doing well in regards to controlling COVID-19. Most new COVID cases were around under 200 or so. However, we've had two days straight of spikes. Governor Gretchen Whitmer had been slowly reopening the state; last week, hair salons were allowed to reopen. Today, there were over 400 new cases of COVID in Michigan.
However, Michigan is getting good grades from health experts, especially for how Whitmer is handling the pandemic. Recently, she extended the edict forcing people in public buildings to wear masks until July 15th. Studies have shown how most types of masks can and will block germs and viruses from infecting others. Obviously, it's a lot better than nothing at all.
So, why don't people wear masks? My guess is stupidity. They all buy into the lies that COVID-19 is a hoax and that blue state governors like Whitmer simply want to fuck over small businesses. After all, you could buy a new pair of jeans at Meijer. But, you can't buy those same pair of jeans at a small mom-n-pop shop that doesn't sell essential food items. And unlike the Meijer family - net worth $6 billion - their owner has a mortgage and car payments like the rest of us.
The reality is that yes, it sucks that every time we walk out of our homes, we're risking ourselves. Wearing a mask can get hot and smelling our breath is far from fun. Not to mention the fact that the occasional zit I get on my nose from the bacteria that builds up from wearing one for a period of time. But, popping pimples is a hell of a lot more fun than being hooked up to a respirator.
Let's remember something: with all of the protests that have been happening these past few weeks, not many of the protesters have been diagnosed with COVID. Why? They wore their masks. I know what I'm about to say is in a way, wrong, but, the people who broke windows and looted were a lot smarter than the rednecks who stormed Michigan's state capitol with their Gadsden snakes and Confederate flags. As I've mentioned in the past, thank God that pRick Snyder is no longer our governor. With how he treated Flint, I would be sure that if he was still in charge, Michigan would be #1 in COVID cases. Thanks to Whitmer's leadership, true, we're #10 in total coronavirus cases, but we're now #20 in active cases. I just hope with people still coming here from other states, that they don't give us their disease. It's yet another good reason to get out and enjoy some sunshine when it's possible.
The good news is that Dr. Anthony Fauci thinks that a COVID vaccine may be available in a few months to the early part of 2021. If so, the days of wearing a mask will come to an end, and we can relive our lives before COVID hit. We can go to movies, go to concerts and party. But for now, please wear a mask.
If you give me COVID, I only hope that karma will hit you hard.
