When the public first knew about AIDS nearly 40 years ago, there was definitely a lot of ignorance towards it.
--
----Science has long claimed that the disease came from someone getting scratched by a monkey. Yet, the Jebus freaks have all cried that Gawd created it to rid this world of gays.
And yet, the LGBTQ+ community is stronger than ever. Fifty years ago, you came out of the closet and you were disowned. Today, it's hardly a big deal at all. LGBTQ+ people can now get married and thanks to the Supreme Court, you cannot get fired for being gay.
Of course, AIDS is sexually transmitted and it's still around. Granted, there's tons of medicine out there to help control the spread of the disease, like Biktarvy, the sad reality is that one still needs to wrap 'er up before porking away.
Not long ago, I saw a picture of Dr. Anthony Fauci from the 1980s researching cures for AIDS. The photo sends a message that even back then, he was at the forefront of finding a cure for the disease. However, AIDS is still a reality.
We can all credit Dr. Fauci for being the spokesperson for keeping us all safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. It's true that we need to protect ourselves from others who might be carrying the disease. But, will we actually have a cure for the disease? If it flares up in the Fall when the temperatures drop, will we be all affected? Will a vaccine be a cure-all?
Well, at least there's one person whom I've respected in all this, and it's Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Her stay-at-home orders have been working to the point that our daily amount of new cases of COVID-19 here in Michigan are virtually at the same levels as they were when it first started. Sadly, it's a different story in other states.
New COVID-19 cases are flaring up mainly in southern states like Texas, Arizona, Florida and North Carolina. Sadly, California - extremely hit hard by COVID-19 - had over 3,800 new cases of the disease since yesterday.
Funny that I mention Texas because there's an internet meme that says, "The entire planet: 'stay home!' Texas: (a picture of a roadside billboard for the convenience store chain Buc-ee's) Risk It For the Brisket". Now, I've never been to Buc-ee's and my experience with Texas has been limited to connecting flights and the times when I was little over 30 years ago when my family drove through the panhandle to go to Arizona and back. But, from what I've heard, Buc-ee's food is to die for. Plus, many of their locations are about the size of a modern supermarket despite technically being c-stores.
The nearest Buc-ee's to me is - per Google Maps - Dallas. So, I sure as hell don't want to risk it for the brisket. It's too bad that Drumpf's minions wouldn't mind doing so.
This Saturday, Drumpf is planning a rally at the 19,000-seat BOK Center in Tulsa, OK, a state that's been seeing spikes of COVID-19 in recent days. A myriad of doctors have pleaded Tulsa's mayor to cancel the event, fearing that spikes in COVID-19 will worsen the pandemic and clog up the city's hospital beds. According to Reuters, Drumpf's Saturday event will be the largest since the pandemic started in March.
I have a feeling that the people who run the Darwin Awards will be proudly be spending plenty of overtime making statues.
You know, it's Summer and there's a lot I want to do. I want to go on a road trip with my new Jeep. I want to go to concerts. But, all that's gonna have to wait until this virus runs its course. Even in China, there's still 252 people battling the virus. I fondly remembered a Facebook friend of mine - who is an outspoken COVID-19 denier - doing a Facebook live of him flying to Mexico on a crowded flight when the pandemic began. He thought that the Mexicans were brave for ignoring what the media was saying at the time. Surprise! Mexico is now a COVID hotspot with 4,599 new cases from yesterday.
I know, COVID is taking a back seat to the racist BS that has hit the country. But the reality is, is that we still need to wear our masks wherever we go. We need to practice social distancing. We need to flatten the curve harder. If you think that people like Big Gretch is taking away your rights, well, I got news for you: YOU DON'T HAVE RIGHTS WHEN YOU'RE SIX FEET UNDER! END OF FUCKING STORY!
If you get COVID-19 from going somewhere you shouldn't be going to, you're only making the problem worse, period.
