Last week, the Fall 2018 Nielsen radio ratings were released for Grand Rapids and Radio-info.com gave its listeners a small surprise: ratings info for the non-commercial stations.
Not surprisingly, the top-ranked non-comm was good 'ol WCSG, a station still going strong, several years after their morning host got busted for sexually assaulting young boys. The Christian AC station registered a 5.6, good for #5.
The top four was comprised of WSNX - which returned to #1 - B93, WOOD-AM/FM and hot AC Mix 95-7 in its best showing in 20 years. WGRD was knocked to #6 in the ratings. Time to dump the shitty butt rock from the 70s.
But one station that's proven to be an embarrassment is 1680 WPRR. Public Reality Radio only registered a .3, tied for 24th place with Holland's WHTC 1450. WPRR only beat out three other stations in the rankings: Muskegon oldies 98.3 WLCS (a station whose signal no longer makes it to Grand Rapids because of a translator for Catholic WVHF), Christian WNHG 98.7 and perennial ratings wasteland 1230 WTKG.
Beating out WPRR includes GVSU's oldies outlet WGVU-AM 1480 (.5), religious WGNB 89.3 (1.6) and NPR outlet WVGR 104.1 (4.7).
Now, I used to love WPRR, especially for their twice-weekly program Southpaws, which is co-hosted by Darren Gibson. Gibson also programmed the station until a 2016 when station owner Bob Goodrich canned him, claiming that ratings were down. Gibson claimed otherwise, claiming that it was a sucker move by the local Democratic Party and fellow WPRR host Tyrone Bynum. Gibson pissed off hardcore Democrats for not supporting Hillary Clinton in the presidential election. Instead, he supported Green Party candidate Jill Stein, especially after how the Dems treated Bernie Sanders.
I do wonder what WPRR's ratings were under Gibson. It wouldn't be too surprising if it was much higher. But considering what he did to the now-defunct 640 WMFN, it's no surprise that Tyrone Bynum is now doing the same.
You know, I wonder how Bob Goodrich is allowing WPRR to survive. It operates like a non-comm, though it isn't in the eyes of the FCC. They also ask for donations on their website. Yet, Goodrich is the owner of one of the largest movie theater chains in America.
The sad truth is that WPRR is supposed to be the progressive voice of Grand Rapids, but Bynum was an ass-kisser to Hillary. The Dems need more real progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez instead of corporate no-nothings like Hillary. Of course, Goodrich ran for Congress (and lost), so he probably feels that if it has a (D) after its name, it's all good.
Look, if a candidate is not for universal health care, free education and overbloating our military, they shouldn't get elected, period. What WPRR and Goodrich did to Darren was sick and twisted. Then again, Goodrich is a man who allowed his ass to get kicked by the Loeks family. While they're building and renovating their theaters in Grand Rapids, Goodrich hasn't had a presence in this town in years. His nearest theater to GR in Ada is a shithole comparing to any Celebration! Cinema.
