When you think of the words "Helen Devos", what do you think of?
To many in Grand Rapids, they think of her as a compassionate woman who put her name on a children's hospital here in town. But then again, that's what the media wants to tell you.
The reality is, is that when the 90-year-old wife of Amway co-founder Richard Devos died last week, the local media - namely WOOD-TV 8 - was nice enough to canonize her by talking about the nice things she did for west Michigan. But little was mentioned about the dark side of one of the wealthiest families here in town.
Nothing was mentioned about the fact that for decades, Amway has been run like a pyramid scheme, ripping off people. Nothing was also mentioned about the millions the Devoses raised to fight pro-LGBTQ laws and far-right-winged organizations like Focus on the Family. Let's not forget that the Devoses also own the Orlando Magic and gave the victims of last year's Pulse Nightclub shooting $500,000 for their recovery. Yet, the reason why they did this was simply to play nice with the NBA after the controversy surrounding fallen Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling and his bashing of African-Americans. While giving out testimony, Sterling pointed out the Devos family's homophobia.
The same goes with the Devos family's in-laws, the Princes. They also have donated millions to anti-LGBTQ causes and other far-right-winged groups. They're even donors to the American Decency Association, the organization that tried for years to get Howard Stern off the air through their lie-infected "Howard Stern Information and Action Page". I remembered reading that their founder, Bill Johnson gets paid $60,000 per year by simply sitting on his ass and bullying people on the internet. Of course, it was Edgar and Elsa Prince that gave us Betsy Devos, who wants to destroy the public school system and her little brother Erik, whose Blackwater was simply a rouse to kill Muslims.
I remembered talking to a former co-worker of mine about Edgar Prince and he told me that he knew a mailman who delivered to the Prince Corporation. He was away for some time because he had cancer and when he came back, Edgar asked him about his disappearance. His response? He flew the man out to the Mayo Clinic in one of his personal planes.
Now granted, The Grinch's heart grew in size, but only after he had stolen everything from Who-ville and their citizens pretended that nothing really happened. Now, if Edgar Prince's mailman was gay, he'd probably turn around and think to himself "yeah, rot in hell you faggot".
You see, if a billionaire doesn't want to look evil, they would slap their name on a building. In the Devos's case, it's a children's hospital that's littered with bright colors, paintings and little waterfalls. In reality, it's a hospital owned by Spectrum Health that the Devoses whipped up $5 million for the naming rights in the benefit of the family matriarch. Helen Devos never had to work a single day in her life and neither did her children. They own a more than half of Grand Rapids it seems and I avoid it as much as possible, especially ArtPrize. Yes, ArtPrize.
Remember, kids, Hitler built the Autobahn.
