In the world of radio, nothing ever stays the same.

Almost at least once a week, somewhere on this Earth, a radio station is changing format. Just a few weeks ago, two rock stations in Chicago and New York City both flipped to News outlets. The changes have left a few pissed, but that's the way radio works.

And sadly, it happens on occasion on Sirius XM.

In the past few years, the satcaster has created and removed channels. Remember the Punk Channel? Boombox? Who could ever forget Super Shuffle? Well, these channels have come and gone because of various factors, including ratings and listener response.

Now, it's BBC Radio 1's turn.

Earlier this week, Sirius XM canceled its simulcast with the British pop music station for no well-known reason. In its place is a repeated loop of an announcer telling listeners where to turn to, such as Hits 1, 20 on 20 and Alt Nation. I do remember the only time Arbitron ratings came out for Radio 1, and it was pitiful.

Sirius XM has aired Radio 1 for six years but on a time-shifted delay. Unlike Sirius' home-programmed stations, Radio 1 had a British flair and even block programming. One hour would be devoted to pop, another rock, another for hip-hop and so on. According to Wikipedia, the channel's designed for 18-29 year olds, but their average audience is 33.

So, why is Mongo the Dog taking a piss on Auntie Beeb? Who knows? However, next Monday, channel 15 will be replaced with (drumroll please) Studio 54 Radio. Yep! a commercial-free channel operating 24/7 that airs nothing but disco. Obviously, it's the replacement for The Strobe, which has been on off and on over the past several years. According to a press statement, Studio 54's music mix will be 70's and 80's, and even some tracks that haven't been heard since the iconic New York club closed.

True, I was never a huge listener of BBC Radio 1 and I don't mind if Sirius XM has a disco channel or not, the truth is, the timing was terrible. Right now, Britain's burning down and I'd imagine some folks would have been excited to hear their coverage, even if there's a umpteen-hour delay. True, BBC World Service is still on channel 118, but a young person's perspective on the riots would be nicer than a taped loop. Hell, a record warehouse owned by Sony was one of the casualties in the melee. It'll be exciting how it will affect the music industry in Britain.

But instead, Sirius XM needs another channel that airs "I Will Survive".
