Last weekend, I was very thankful that I avoided downtown Grand Rapids like the plague.

For several weeks, I saw signs all around the area advertising CityFest. When I saw the words "Luis and Andrew Palau" above the logo, I knew that it had to be a Jesus fest.

Boy, was I right.

Over 15,000 people attended both days of the event, which featured preachers who all likely begged for a down payment on their next Lexus and shitty CCM acts who repeat the same eight words eight times.

And to make matters worse, guess who came to town? Why! It's none other than Justin Bieber. Sadly, he's a fan of shitty preachers and music.

And guess who helped to create the event? None other than the now-passed scAmway co-founder Richard Devos, who croaked last week at the age of 92. He was good friends of the Palaus; Luis was known for crusading with Billy Graham. Not long ago, the Argentinian announced that he was battling inoperable lung cancer.

All weekend, stations like WOOD-TV had been kissing Devos' ass and calling him a friend to Grand Rapids. Even WZZM-13 had been airing a top-of-the-hour ID slide honoring him. Personally, if I owned a Grand Rapids TV station, I would be airing a slide with Devos getting poked with devil's yokes with the Sanford and Son theme song playing in the background.

WOOD-TV 8, OTOH has been airing a promo with Devos saying that he was thankful for God for building him a good life. I wonder if this God is the one whose son said that it's easier for a camel to go through an eye of an needle than for a rich man to go to Heaven. Oh, wait a minute! Devos was CRC Dutch and probably read from the King James Bible.

Not long ago, I was hearing a sermon from a now-retired minister from the left-leaning United Church of Christ. He talked about how most left-leaning churches (and even a few Catholic and Baptist churches) read from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible while most of the far-right-winged evangelical churches read from the King James or New International Versions, which was translated from the Greek texts for a king. Of course, when you're dealing with a king, you're dealing with putting men over women and slaves. Case in point: 1 Corinthians 6:9, which lists groups of people not going to Heaven. NRSV uses "male prostitutes", KJV uses "homosexuals" while NIV uses "men who have sex with men". Hmmmmm. Ya know that the Greek word "malakoi" was created long before the term "homosexual" was created, so therefore, it shows how wrong King James and his asskissers were.

Ya know, why in the hell would Grand Rapids TV stations honor a monster who hated gays, even though the Bible says to love everybody? Sorry, but the dude was full of hate in his heart and it's funny how people honor him with some stupid Jesus fest. This is part of the reason why I'm so happy to have Powerstream TV, which enabled me to watch WDIV-4 out of Detroit. While WOOD-TV was kowtowing to Devos and his false legacy, WDIV was reporting on a shooting at a White Castle that killed a black man. Since the family that owns WC are huge Drumpf supporters, it's another good reason to avoid that place. Five Guys all the way!

The good news is that Rich Devos will be eventually buried and WOOD-TV, WZZM, Fox 17 and Sinclair's WWMT-3 will move on. The bad news is that Devos' legacy will move on through his survivors and their businesses like Fux Motors and the Grand Rapids Griffins hockey team. If Devos and Jay Van Andel didn't create scAmway, Grand Rapids would probably be a more-progressive town where people are treated more fairly. Blacks wouldn't be hounded by cops and the middle class would be paid more.

By next year, sadly, Luis Palau will probably be dead and other preachers could be coming to town. I wouldn't be too surprised if any of those shysters have shows on TBN.

Where's Stephen Paddock where you need him?
