The Big Fat Idiot's fall into oblivion keeps speeding up.
Yesterday, Premiere Radio Networks, the syndicator of Rush Limbaugh's radio program told its affiliates not to run its bartered spots during his program. With dozens of advertisers dropping their support for the show in the past two weeks due to his comments aimed at Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke, Premiere and parent company Clear Channel are now having to reorganize their ad inventory for the program.
The memo handed to affiliates says that stations can replace the bartered spots with their own local spots or ads from LifeLock or Lear Financial, two companies that haven't abandoned Rush's show. The national spots that air during Rush's show - mainly live reads - will remain intact. However, there are companies that are begging Rush to air their spots. It was announced on Monday that Nevada's BunnyRanch is willing to pay a million bucks to air their spots. Owner Dennis Hof told Reno NBC affiliate KRNV "let him redeem himself by being nice to legal prostitutes... Now is his chance to fix things. If he comes out now and supports the BunnyRanch and real prostitutes, legal prostitution, it might make him look good."
Let's also bear in mind, too that Cumulus Broadcasting - who owns several Rush affiliates, namely WABC New York - is also launching a new talk show from former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee next month. Company president Lew Dickey claims that Huckabee - who kinda replaced Paul Harvey when the legendary newsman died a few years ago - will present a show that isn't confrontational, but rather conversational. Already, 110 stations have signed up for the show, which airs during Limbaugh's legendary noon to 3 p.m. timeslot.
Personally, it would be exciting to see Rush disappear from WABC, his home since 1988. Remember, it was WABC that canned Michael Savage after he badmouthed those with Autism some years back. Of course, losing WABC wouldn't be much of a loss to Rush, since there's a shitload of right-winged AM talkers that would snap up El Rushbo in a heartbeat. But with the plethora of reported PSAs that aired during his show a few days ago, I think WABC wouldn't cry if Rush was let go.
Hopefully soon, Rush's show will share the same outcome as the Akron train station Chrissie Hynde sang about.
