In the past several weeks, Rush Limbaugh's big, fat mouth has cost him a ton of advertisers.
In all, 140 companies have ended their relationship with The Big Fat Idiot over his anti-woman comments regarding Sandra Fluke. Many have felt that Limbaugh's comments were over the line and were an insult to female customers everywhere.
However, in the melee, only two radio stations have dropped his show: KPUA Hilo, HI and WBEC Pittsfield, MA. Yep, just two stations. We haven't heard of any stations that added the show since Slutgate started, but in the world of terrestrial radio, anything's possible.
It kinda reminds me a few years ago when I was chatting with a radio station owner from Michigan's upper peninsula. He worked at Infinity Radio in Dallas (yep, score yourself a few points if you guessed Bill Curtis), and I asked him if he had the chance to air Howard Stern, would he do it. He said that he would, but it would hurt his image with the community, especially when it comes to charitable events in the Sault. Of course, I asked him this after Stern went to Sirius, so it was kind of a non-issue. However, he has since purchased the now-former Rush affiliate in Sault Ste. Marie - WKNW - only to convert it to ESPN Radio. If I ain't mistaken, the Sault is the only radio market in the whole state of Michigan without a Rush affiliate.
(Sadly, Mr. Curtis does own Rush affiliates WMIQ Iron Mountain, WDMJ Marquette and WIAN Ishpeming, all in the U.P.)
What's funny is that not long ago, Rush gained a new affiliate in a small town called Bear Lake, MI, pop. 318. The station, WCUZ 100.1 has had a long history of financial woes, including owners that were left bankrupt. As a matter of fact, the station returned to the air late last year after over 10 years of silence. Oddly enough, the station also airs other right-winged hate mongers, including Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin and (why, why, why...) Don Imus. These shows cost money to air, and I would imagine that 100.1 won't last much longer. Even worse, the station's owner purchased a progressive talk station, WWKK 750 Petoskey only to flip it to Country.
So, why has Rush only lost two affiliates so far over Slutgate? Is it because of ratings? Is it because of local advertising dollars? Contractual reasoning? Who knows! I wouldn't be too surprised, though if Cumulus will be canning Rush on most of their stations since they're going to syndicate Mike Huckabee's new show next month. Already, 110 affiliates have been lined up and it's also worth mentioning that Cumulus has been ridding itself of a lot of other companies' shows, namely The Billy Bush Show which aired on their Top 40 stations.
Remember: when Howard Stern made fun of Selina's death, he lost his Dallas affiliate. When he talked about the hot chicks running out of Columbine High School with their big titties bouncing, he lost Denver. When Michael Savage blasted those with Autism, a statewide network of stations canned his show, and Glenn Beck lost stations in Madison, Hartford and even New York City over his gay bashing. The biggest station he's lost so far is in Hilo, and it's not a town people think about daily.
Personally, if I ran a charitable event, I wouldn't want the Rush affiliate to be involved, especially if it attracted men, women and children of all ages. Rush Limbaugh sent the wrong message to his fans by attacking ALL women. I hope to God that his current wife divorces him and that he never has kids. No woman with a high IQ should ever be called a slut, especially by a college dropout married four times.
I hope the bloodbath will start sooner or later.
