Well, there's some good news and bad news in the world of northern Michigan radio.

The good news is that Rock 105 and 95-5 finally has a new jock to replace Smitty and she's a legend. Trudi Daniels, long-time Detroit radio personality and former sidekick to Drew and Mike on WRIF is now the new midday jock on the active rock station. As a result, Jay Roberts moves to afternoons.

The bad news is that from the looks of things, there's really nothing local about the station anymore.

As it was, Smitty was the sole local jock Rock 105/95-5 had. Now, they have a morning jock from Green Bay (Cartman) and an afternoon jock from Minneapolis (Jay Roberts). From what I can recall, Trudi is still based in Detroit. After all, Black Diamond's offices are based in Rochester Hills. I've heard some of Trudi's show today, and she sounded good, though it sounded like she was reading from liner cards and being generic. I didn't even hear her backsell a song.

You know, I'm still upset at Black Diamond firing Smitty just because they refused to defend him when KLT sent a fake aircheck of him playing an obscene song edited in with a rant he made against their phony afternoon jock to Black Diamond's advertisers. I've even read Rock 105/95-5's Facebook page and they made two posts about Trudi and both were responded with "where's Smitty?" posts. Well, he's now a bartender at Right Brain Brewery. He even made an appearance on a segment during a newscast on 9&10 News a few weeks ago when Right Brain was featured. Sadly, he wasn't interviewed or even mentioned. It was like a faded A-list actor reduced to being an extra in a movie.

Look, Trudi Daniels is a great radio talent. Hell, if I was up in northern Michigan and had to choose between her or the severely outdated and cringeworthy Terri Ray on KLT, I'd choose Trudi by a mile. However, when you have a radio station that lacks in being local, it will show.

Then again, it's happening everywhere, even here in Grand Rapids. Look at WSNX: no local jocks save for Mike in middays and yet the reason why they're still a top station is because they're the only station in town that plays rap music. In Rock 105/95-5's case, it's new rock while KLT, Q100 and The Bear are heavy on the classics. But let's remember that local radio has to deal with Pandora, Spotify, Sirius and other services that are superior to them. The Fall book begins in a few weeks. Will Rock 105/95-5 survive without Smitty and out-of-towners running the show?

Only the listener can decide.
