We had 30 good years.

Hard to believe it, but it had been almost 30 years since Ronald Reagan was the last politician who was the target of an assassination attempt. After all, the turbulent 60's, 70's and 80's saw the likes of JFK, RFK, Gerald Ford and Reagan seeing the barrel of an assassin's gun.

Now as 2011 begins, we're adding one more to the list: Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
The Democrat in Republican-heavy Arizona was meeting with constituents and shoppers at the Safeway supermarket in Casas Adobes near Tucson Saturday when a gunman blasted fire at Giffords and others present. After the melee, 14 people were injured and six were killed. Giffords was shot in the head; a bullet went through her brain but is expected to live. Sadly, amongst the killed included US District Court Judge John Roll and probably the saddest of the murders, little nine-year-old Christina Green, who was the president of her third grade class and the granddaughter of World Series-winning baseball manager Dallas Green.

Giffords represented the 8th Congressional District of Arizona since 2007 and is married to astronaut Mark Kelly. She's a Blue Dog Democrat, identifying herself as a moderate. She is pro-choice, supports public schools, pro-renewable energy and is a critic of Arizona's immigration law. However, she supported the big bank bailout of 2008 and... Gun rights.

The assailant was 22-year-old Jared Loughler, whose charges could give him the death penalty under federal law. He was living with his parents in Tucson, five miles from the site of the shooting. A friend of his called him quiet, yet opinionated. Another friend called him a loner who was also a liberal four years ago. However in recent years, he politics became more anarchist-leaning and even cited Nazi and communist books such as Mein Kampf as his favorites. He even maintained a YouTube profile under the name "ClassItUp10" and made multiple videos attacking the government and Pima Community College for charging people to attend their school. He was suspended from Pima and dropped out in October of last year for rude behavior in class. The school wanted him to have a psychiatric evaluation before re-attending the school, but chose to drop out instead.

Loughler even had a MySpace page where he posted his rants (wow, how 2007 of him); shortly before he opened fire, he told his followers "Goodbye, Dear friends . . . Please don't be mad at me."
Now, there's mounting evidence that Loughler was anti-Semetic and even had ties to a group called American Renaissance, whose founder, Jared Taylor has been linked to segregation, especially towards Jews. Giffords is Jewish.

Many felt that after the shootings that the Tea Party played a role in the shootings. After all, they're anti-government and act holier than thou. Sarah Palin's Action Committee even had on its website a picture of the US with crosshairs all over it targeting districts lead by them ultra-libruls like Giffords. The PAC has since removed that picture from their website. It was also noted that Giffords' office was vandalized after the picture started appearing on their website.

After the shooting, FBI agents raided Loughlin's home and found documents that said stuff like "I planned ahead", "My assassination", and "Giffords". Loughlin is not talking to the authorities, using the Fifth Amendment as his shield. Loughlin bought the gun used in the attacks - a 9mm Glock - since Arizona has very light rules when it comes to gun rights.

Ya know folks, this is part of the reason why I won't live in Arizona; it's because the state's got too many loonies. Now, you've got Hispanics being forced to show cops their papers just because of what's going on in Nogales. Honestly, I think the people there are overheated and can't think straight when it comes to being a model citizen.

In all, we've lost a judge, several ordinary folks and a little girl who had a bright future. Plus, a state rep is now probably going to have to live a life of disability just because of a loser who should have gotten out more. It is my wish that justice be served and that the people affected by this horrible tragedy will find comfort in all this. Yes, I hate my government too, but I'm not that crazy.

The ironic thing is that in one of Jared's videos, one of the background songs is "Bodies" from Drowning Pool, whose chorus goes "let the bodies hit the floor!"

Maybe it will be his body hitting the floor.
