Bee-otched For: polishing a turd in Grand Rapids
---
A long-suffering Grand Rapids rock station has once again tweaked their format.

In other words, they polished a turd.

iHeartMedia's WBFX/101-3 The Brew flipped from classic rock to a mainstream rock format last week as part of the company-wide "Man Up!" promotion. The station still plays classics from Led Zeppelin, Ozzy and Van Halen, but newer artists have been added to the mix, such as Linkin Park, Shinedown and Metallica.

Currently, The Brew doesn't play any currents, but that could all change within weeks.

In their last Arbitron ratings book, The Brew registered a measly 2.0, making them the bitch to rock ratings champ WGRD and WLAV. 101.3 has been a rock station since 2001, when it flipped from classic country WCUZ to what was then 101.3 The Fox, playing classic rock with Bob and Tom in the morning. Since then, The Fox became The Brew and Bob and Tom were dropped due to poor ratings.

When The Fox became The Brew two years ago, the station had live, local jocks. Now the station is almost entirely cyberjocked. Morning man Klinger is the evening guy at DC101 in Washington, middayer Brian Rivers is out of KODJ in Salt Lake City and the afternoon team Hunter and Brooke are the morning team at Rock 106.5 also in the Utah capitol.

Apparently, Brent Matthews is still with the station, voicetracking overnights. The only local talent handling the graveyard shift... That's something new, I think.

So, the question is that will The Brew kick GRD's ass in the ratings? The answer is a big, fat no. I think the only way The Brew can destroy GRD and Free Beer and Hot Wings is if they can get a competitve morning show like Bubba the Love Sponge (bear in mind that Bubba once worked at GRD in the late 80s). But since iHM canned Bubba in Tampa over indecency concerns over a decade ago, 'taint gonna happen.

Look, a voicetracked guy from Washington who doesn't know a damn thing about Grand Rapids will not kick FB&HW's ass! I think iHM needs to know that this station might make it up to a 3 share tops and nothing more. When all else fails, there's lots of format holes in GR: urban, Spanish, alternative, just to name a few.

The moral of the story: wanna kick another station's ass in the ratings? Don't go the cheap route.
