Not everything you see on late night TV can make you laugh. Sometimes, it can rip at your heartstrings.
Monday night, ABC's Jimmy Kimmel talked about the birth of his new baby boy Billy and things turned very sad very quickly. He explained that while he and his wife were with their new baby, a nurse noticed that he was purple. They looked him over and noticed that he had a rare heart condition. Billy had a three-hour surgery to repair the bad valve and according to Jimmy, he needs two more surgeries.
At the end of what might be the saddest yet bravest monologue on a late night talk show given since David Letterman's heart-wrenching post-9/11 speech, Kimmel applauded the Affordable Care Act for allowing millions of people to afford surgeries like Billy's. Beforehand, people less fortunate than Billy were screwed because of pre-existing conditions. One example was Eric De La Cruz, the budding musician and brother of CNN/NBC journalist Veronica De La Cruz who needed a heart transplant but died before the ACA was passed. When it was finally passed, Veronica praised the bill, though it was too little, too late.
All day yesterday, people were sending their well wishes to the Kimmels. Even former President Obama tweeted thanking him for supporting ACA. However, the House is now voting on yet another ACA "Obamacare" repeal bill that will set us back to the horrible old days when it was impossible to afford even a simple doctor's visit.
Even worse, one ex-congressman has shown how much of an asshole he really is.
Joe Walsh of Illinois tweeted "Sorry Jimmy Kimmel: your sad story doesn't obligate me or anybody else to pay for somebody else's health care." Since making the tweet, many have slammed the former Illinois lawman for being insensitive. However, some have pointed out that Walsh was once behind his child support payments by $117,000. He's even made racist statements against blacks on his Twitter feed.
The good news was that in 2012, Walsh was defeated in the state congressional election by war hero Tammy Duckworth, 55% to 45%. At least some people in Illinois have a brain.
Sadly, this is why I fucking hate Repukes. They believe that if you get sick, you should pay every dime. If you have a heart attack, it's your fault. If you get cancer, it's your fault and so on. Granted, Jimmy Kimmel is wealthy and can afford to pay for his son's medical issues, the truth is, most Americans aren't. Now that we're stuck with a president that most Americans hate and if the ACA goes, this will further throw all Americans into a downward spiral, maybe even worse than 2008.
The Republican Party: let's go ahead and save the fetus, but when it's popped out, fuck you.
