For 30 years, the Los Angeles Clippers were the Lakers' bitch.

While the Lakers were winning championships, the Clippers were "that other team" in L.A. The team originally played in Buffalo and then San Diego. They moved to L.A. in 1984 when three years prior, real estate magnate and lawyer Donald Sterling bought the team for $12.5 million.

The Clippers never won an NBA championship and never had a better record than the Lakers. But in recent years, their fortunes were turned around when the Lakers started to fizzle out and thanks to great players like Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, they became one of the NBA's top teams.

Now, it's the Clippers' turn for dominance as they're currently getting set for Game Five of the NBA Playoffs vs. the Golden State Warriors tonight at Los Angeles. But it will be a bittersweet homecoming for the Clippers since it's their first game since all hell broke loose last weekend when a recording of owner Donald Sterling arguing with his girlfriend surfaced on TMZ.com.

In the call, Sterling was angry that his 31-year-old girlfriend, Maria Vanessa Perez, aka Vivian Stiviano was pictured on her Instagram account with former Laker Magic Johnson. In the lengthy call, Sterling is angry at Stiviano for bringing blacks to the games, even though Stiviano is 1/2 black herself.

As we all know by now, Sterling is now pretty much the most-hated man in sports. Several fellow NBA owners such as Michael Jordan have admonished his statements, celebs have bashed him and even President Obama have commented on Sterling's rant. Even his estranged wife of nearly 60 years, Rochelle rebuked his comments.

Rumor has it that the reason why Stiviano recorded his comments was due to the fact that Sterling - who is 81 - might be coming down with either Alzheimer's or dementia. She claims that she's not the one who leaked the tape to TMZ, especially since she's embroiled in some legal battles with Sterling's wife right now. Rochelle claims that V. is a gold digger and dates wealthy older men like Sterling.

Nonetheless, the damage is done. On Sunday's game in Oakland, Clippers players removed their warm-up jerseys and turned them inside-out as a sign of protest. Now that the series is coming back to the Staples Center, people wonder if it's right to support a team whose owner is a racist who won't even apologize for his comments. As expected, the NBA is investigating Sterling and his consequences might be hurtful.

You see, the Clippers are a franchise, just like McDonald's, Burger King, Subway and so on. You can own a franchise, but you must adhere to their rules. Franchises have different rules and different payment agreements. My mother owned a computer repair franchise with her now-ex-husband several years ago in Arizona. They wanted a partner and found one who owned several shops of his own. However, he was caught cheating his employees and his shops himself by embezzling money. He'd report that the billing was low when it was much higher. He was caught and surprise, he was forced to sell off his stores... for only $1.

Just because you own a piece of Mickey D's doesn't make you king of the world by any degree. Hell, I know of two former Burger King locations right here in Grand Rapids. They failed probably because they didn't make enough money or the location just wasn't right.

In the case of Donald Tokowitz Sterling, there's a variety of things that are possible regarding the Clippers' future. One is for Sterling to give the team to Rochelle and another is for the NBA to force the team off his hands and make it an NBA O&O until a new owner emerges. IMHO, it might be possible that a future owner of the Clippers would want to move the team to Seattle, a town still infuriated after the Sonics moved to Oklahoma City in 2008. It would be no huge loss to L.A. since they still have the Lakers, but is still wondering why an NFL franchise hasn't been interested in the city since the Raiders and Rams abandoned the city 20 years ago.

In the end, I think that Donald Sterling is a pure asshole for using blacks as a key for his success but ended up spitting on them just because when it's his team's turn to play the Staples Center, he wants 20,000 lily white folks to cram the stands to watch some black folks entertain. I agree that it's time for the old man to throw in the towel and have somebody with many degrees more tolerance to own the team.

At least the Lakers' owner, Jeanie Buss did Playboy about 20 years ago and yes, I have that issue in my (albeit small) collection. Jeanie-1, Donald-zip.
