Only in America where idiots shop at a store where they treat their employees just a step above slavery.
In Pennsylvania, a judge has ordered Walmart to cough up $224 million to 187,000 workers because they were all forced to work during their mandated lunch breaks. According to the suit, the employees had been waiting to get paid for ten years.
That's about $1,200 per employee.
According to the labor union Making Change at Walmart, they're rejoicing since it's a sign that they can no longer mistreat and short-change their employees. As-is, the family that controls Walmart, the Waltons have billions stashed away in foreign bank accounts to avoid paying high taxes. As a matter of fact, Walmart only paid $13 million in taxes last year.
For me, the news that Walmart will have to pay their employees hits home. A decade ago, I had family that worked at Walmarts and Sams Clubs and hated it. One family member lost money from his paycheck because they had to fix a vending machine that he didn't even use. Too many people were pushing and punching it and his boss told him that "we're a team. If you see somebody smacking the vending machine, tell them to stop." REALLY?!?! He admitted that he even worked for free because he had to finish his job and since Walmart won't allow their employees to work overtime, he punched out at his normal time and continued working.
Folks, this is what happens when the economy sucks and there's no jobs. Your bosses can find ways to buck the system and FORCE you to do things you don't want to do. The reason why is because when there's no jobs, there's more freedom for THEM to use you for more profit. I'm a shining example of this: I worked for the same guy for 10 1/2 years. During this time, he only gave me ONE raise, FORCED his employees to have only two breaks EVEN if they're working ten hours and he would even demerit you if you didn't work the hours he asked you to work. I looked for other jobs - even in other cities - but thanks to the awful economy brought to us by good 'ol Dubya, that's what we all got. We all got a boss that tells you that the company's not making enough money to give everybody a raise, yet, he goes on many vacations per year, including massive fishing trips to Wawa, Canada.
Now that we have a Democrat in the White House - and I hope it continues for the next four years - the jig is up for Walmart and other companies that mistreat their employees. The economy is way better now and if people are forced to work during their lunch breaks, they have the cojones to report to the labor boards without hesitation nor worry.
