Northern Michigan: where there's five rock stations, and none of them are playing the latest from popular artists like Alice in Chains, Deftones, Three Days Grace or even Papa Roach.

As I reported a few months ago, the north's only current-based rock station, Real Rock 105 and 95-5 had scaled back on their new rock and started playing more rock from the 1970's and 80's from bands such as Styx, Foreigner and even Journey.

The good news: it seems that Real Rock has shitcanned those geezer rockers and is now focused on playing rock from the 1990's to just recently. The bad news: I said "just recently" and not "new".
All year, Real Rock has not added any new rock to their playlist, and it makes me want to scratch my head. I checked their sister station, Big Country 102.9's playlist and they're playing currents, but not Real Rock.

Bear in mind that Real Rock's parent, Northern Star Broadcasting is spinning off two of their classic rock The Bear stations - 94.5 Mackinaw City and 93.9 Mio - to the owners of Tea Party talker 106.3 WYPV in Onaway in exchange for 106.3. The reason for the trade-off is so Del Reynolds - already the GM of the NSB stations - can legally own them.

So, why is Real Rock not spinning new tracks from their core artists? After all, that station's NSB's highest performing ratings-wise. I have a sad feeling that they could be a casualty if Reynolds takes over, but who knows? With many people in Real Rock's age demo 1) not living in northern Michigan and 2) already owning everything from smartphones playing internet radio to satellite receivers, anything could be possible.

And here's a scarier thought: KLT now plays more currents than Real Rock. Ugh....
