The radio station named after the World's Largest Store (Sears, of course) might be purging themselves of the World's Largest Shithead.

Rumors are swirling that AM 89 WLS in Chicago might be ridding themselves of Rush Limbaugh by the end of this month. Currently, the station is in 26th place in the Nielsen ratings with a horrid 1.1 share. Amongst the stations beating the Big 89 include several Spanish stations, an oldies station that only serves Chicago's west side and a gospel station or two. The 26th place finish is embarrassing for a station that once upon a time was Chicago's top station and a must-listen top 40 station for anybody in the midwest with its 50KW signal.

However, Cumulus execs have all said that Rush is staying put and not going anywhere. Then again, WLS is trying to make themselves free of political talk. They recently signed Jonathan Brandmeier and Steve Dahl, two Chicago radio legends who tend to be apolitical. However, the station also airs nutjobs Michael Savage and Mark Levin at night, and rumor has it that neither show has many sponsors.

Ever since El Rushbo's unnecessary attack on law student Sandra Fluke a few years ago, people have been waking up and realizing that conservative talk radio is nothing more than a bunch of old white guys spewing stupidity. Even WTCM 580 in my old stomping grounds of Traverse City has cut way back on their syndicated talk and is now mostly live and local from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the exception of - you guessed it - Rush from Noon to 3. However, WOOD 1300/106.9 here in GR is a different story; they're only local from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. and it's angry old white men all day and all night. Even worse, a lot of WOOD's programming is also heard on sister station WTKG 1230.

The difference: WOOD is owned by Clear Channel/iHeartMedia while WTCM is family owned. 'Nuff said.

If Rush leaves the air in Chicago, it's no big loss. iHeartMedia might take country Big 95.5 - already slumping with a 1.0 - and make it one of their angry old white men clearing houses. Problem solved. But will Rush on FM work? I hope not. Bear in mind that most talk radio fans are aging baby boomers and retirees that advertisers don't want. As long as Rush and all his kin charge big bucks to air their hate, it's probably a better idea to go live and local.

But since Glenn Beck and Coast to Coast AM are now on a low-rent signal in suburban Chicago instead of a 50,000-watter, anything is possible.
